Why did Tyson Fury end his boxing career? Reason explained

Published

on

  1. Tyson Fury’s reason for return: Fury admitted that normal life quickly became dull, leading to his decision to return to the sport he calls his “one true love.” He also noted that the recent tragic car accident involving Anthony Joshua’s friends reminded him to “live every day as if it were your last.”

  2. What Fury said: “Don’t be fooled, when I retire, I have no intention of coming back, but I miss playing,” he said at a press conference. “But after a few months, I got bored with normal life. Dropping the kids off at school, taking the dogs for a walk, things like that. I miss everything that involves huge fights.”
  3. History of retirement decisions: This is far from Fury’s first retirement; famously “retired” after defeating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 and again after defeating Dillian Whyte in 2022. He most recently retired in January 2025 after a second loss to Usyk, claiming he was “permanently finished” only to turn back.
  4. Details of Makhmudov’s fight: The 37-year-old will face hard-hitting Russian Arslanbek Makhmudov, who boasts an impressive record of 21 wins and 19 knockouts. The heavyweight main fight consisting of 12 rounds will take place at the stadium Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

  5. British TV channel and live broadcast: The event is broadcast exclusively on the website Netflix as part of the streaming platform’s major expansion into live sports. Subscribers can stream the action via the Netflix app to all compatible devices, including sharp TVs, game consoles and mobile phones.
  6. Ring Walking Hours: Official coverage of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium event on Netflix will begin at 7pm BST. Ring walks for the main event are expected around 10 p.m.
  7. Fight with Anthony Joshua: Fury reiterated that his main goal for 2026 is the long-touted Battle of Britain against Joshua. His opponent last fought Jake Paul in December, but he was injured in a tragic car accident later that month.

  8. Usyk’s trilogy: Apart from Joshua, Fury hinted that he will face a third and final fight Aleksander Usyk there remains the possibility of resolving the competition. He remains outraged by the judges’ decisions during their 2024 fights and sees this return as the beginning of a plan to retire as a three-time world champion.

  9. Fitness and form: Although his father, John Fury, has publicly stated that Tyson’s “best years are behind him,” the fighter insisted at Thursday’s press conference that his reactions were as piercing as ever. He entered camp much lighter than in his two previous fights, looking to regain the mobility that defined his best form.

  10. Broader Heavyweight Context: His upcoming fight poses a risk for Fury. A loss to Makhmudov would likely end any hopes of high-stakes fights between Joshua or Usyk later this year.

Pereira reflected on the event and spoke honestly about how it all happened.

“Times Square was an incredible experience because of how tough it was to create.

“People were disconnected from the experience, and that’s what I felt: I want people to be engaged.”

“It’s about affordability. It’s about accessibility.

Eddie Hearn believes Tyson Fury lacks confidence ahead of his clash with Anthony Joshua later this year.

Joshua and Fury have signed a deal to face each other in the highly anticipated all-British blockbuster, which is expected to be staged in November.

“AJ” will be there will face the unknown Albanian Kristian Prenga during warm-ups in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on July 25.

Fury, who retired to beat Arslanbek Makhmudov on points in April, is also keen to fight again before facing his long-time rival, with an August 1 date being discussed.

“He’s going to do what he’s going to do,” the 46-year-old said Sky Sports Boxing.

“And if he feels like he needs a good fight, I like that because it tells me he’s not completely confident.

“He shot 12 good rounds with Makhmudov to the point where you really need more rounds?

“He told us, ‘You don’t need another fight.’

“In two years of boxing, we had four rounds with Jake Paul.

“You had 12 rounds with Makhmudov at Tottenham but you still feel you need more rounds to prepare for Anthony Joshua.

“More rounds won’t assist you, because I can see it.

“When Makhmudov came into that fight, I knew what AJ was going to do.”
