Zuffa Boxing is targeting British stars to challenge the Gigantic Two
Published
3 months agoon
Zuffa Boxing’s stated goal of competing with established British promoters hinges on one problem: talent. IN analysis of promotion prospects in Great BritainiFL TV argued that the path to joining Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren at the top of British boxing was through transfers and that Dana White’s company would likely have to outperform the market to get there. Zuffa already has a contract with one leading British company and has reportedly added another, with the target list still linked to its rivals.
The question about the lineup comes as Zuffa puts out its first cards in the region. The organization will make its debut in the UK on June 6 in Bournemouth, where former WBO cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith will face Canadian Ryan Rozicki, and on August 8, the first Irish Zuffa Boxing 10 gala will take place at the 3Arena in Dublin.
Signatures and goals
The anchor is Conor Benn. He left Hearn’s Matchroom in February on a rumored $15 million one-fight contract, defeated Regis Prograis at Tottenham in April, and then re-signed to a multi-fight contract that: according to ESPNwill last until 2028. “Our visions were aligned,” Benn said, adding that the goal remains a world title and the fights fans expect.
iFL TV has recognized Chris Eubank Jr. as his most likely next target, reporting that his relationship with promoter Boxxer appears strained. A move to Zuffa would open the door to a third fight with Benn after the pair met twice last year, and the fight, according to iFL TV, will attract stadiums at every weight above middleweight.
Apart from these two, the website noted that most of Britain’s top fighters are involved elsewhere. Daniel Dubois, Dalton Smith, Jack Catterall and Fabio Wardley have all signed with Warren or Hearn, as has potential heavyweight Moses Itauma, who signed a long-term deal with Queensberry about 18 months ago. iFL TV also named lithe heavyweight Ben Whittaker, who is affiliated with Matchroom and is scheduled to make his U.S. debut this month, as a fighter Zuffa could pursue once his contracts expire. White’s public dispute with both promoters, the portal added, complicates any cooperation. A broadcast breakdown, questions about Zuffa’s own belt and Hearn and Warren’s answers are featured in BoxingInsider’s look at Zuffa’s wider UK plan.
On the elite level, Hearn said this week that junior welterweight champion Shakur Stevenson has signed with Zuffa. “Shakur has signed with Zuffa, so that will be his continued development,” Hearn told Fight Hub TV. The promotion has not formally announced the deal. Hearn, who promoted Stevenson back in January, questioned the expense behind such transfers and said the model would not be sustainable.
Irish Card
Zuffa’s performance in Dublin opens a second route to talent from the region. According to The 42 and Irish Boxing, Cork’s Callum Walsh, who headlined the organization’s debut in Las Vegas in January, will be the expected headliner on August 8. The same media reports that middleweight Aaron McKenna Monaghan is in line to fight Italian Etinosa Oliha for the vacant IBF middleweight title. The IBF ordered this fight after stripping Janibek Alimkhanuly following a failed doping test. Zuffa confirmed the date, but did not reveal the lineup.
For now, the squad is a measure of Zuffa’s ambitions in British and Irish boxing. Bournemouth will take first place on June 6 and Dublin on August 8.

Noel Mikaelian Critiques Opetaias Fear Factor Marketing Strategy
Published

September 1, 2026

“I think that’s also a big marketing point that you’re mentioning there, that nobody wants to fight him. I see a lot of fighters challenging him and other fighters. I think that’s just marketing to say, ‘Nobody wants to fight this guy.’ This is prizefighting, and everybody wants to fight anyone for the biggest prize,” Mikaelian said to Fight Hub TV.
That choice supports his case. The WBC ordered him to defend against David Benavidez in May, yet he accepted an immediate fight with Opetaia rather than wait for that event to be finalized. His title status remains uncertain, but taking this bout is hardly the behavior of someone intimidated by Opetaia’s reputation.
Calling a boxer “avoided” is one of the sport’s oldest promotional devices. It elevates the favored fighter without requiring victories over every available contender. Television platforms, purses, and promotional control often prevent major fights long before fear becomes relevant.
Facing Opetaia does not make the assignment safe. The 35-year-old identified the Australian’s southpaw stance as his chief concern, along with his speed, footwork, and powerful left hand.
Their lead-foot battle will shape the exchanges. Mikaelian must place his left foot outside Opetaia’s right to move away from the straight left and create a lane for his own right hand. Losing that position would leave him following Opetaia and absorbing combinations during his rapid entries.
Crowding Opetaia, tying him up, and forcing him to restart can reduce that speed. The approach may produce an awkward fight, but allowing him to operate freely at midrange would validate the warnings surrounding this matchup.
The champion considers himself Opetaia’s equal and describes them as the two best cruiserweights. He is treating his opponent as a talented southpaw whose aura has grown larger than his record. September 12 will reveal how much of that aura came from marketing and how much was earned in the ring.

Moses It will hurt suffered a surprising defeat to Filip Hrgovic on Saturday, and the 21-year-old has now revealed who he wants to face upon his return.
Itauma looked to be fulfilling his destiny and dominating his Croatian opponent during the opening rounds at the O2 Arena over the weekend, but his success soon turned to desperation when Hrgovic’s chin held up and his own stamina did not.
An exhausted Itauma eventually collapsed in round nine of the contestwith Hrgovic pulling off a remarkable upset to throw the heavyweight scene a huge curveball, hand Itauma a first career loss and get his hands on the IBF heavyweight world title.
In an interview with talkSPORT Boxingpromoter Frank Warren revealed that Itauma has already asked for a rematch with ‘El Animal’.
“In that last round, he was still firing back. He has got a firing heart, he is a very brave young man, very brave. It’s now about what he does, how he prepares, he is saying to me, ‘can we get the rematch on?’, which is a natural reaction.”
Despite the 21-year-old’s desire to take on Hrgovic for a second time, it seems as though the latter will be made to face Cuba’s Frank Sanchez, who agreed to a step-aside deal to allow Itauma and Hrgovic to fight for the IBF title under the condition that he would face the winner.
Continuing, Warren seemed to confirm that a scrap between Hrgovic and Sanchez will be next, advising Itauma to take some time off before rushing into a second shot at the heavyweight throne.
“I told him, ‘you have got to just switch off from boxing, go and chill out, go and spend some time with your family and then come back, recharge your batteries and then we will get to work again,’
“The landscape is what it is, he is a a part of it, he has shown that he belongs at that level and provided that we learn and he learns some lessons from the fight, I think that he can go on and do some great things.”
In his post-fight interview, newly-crowned IBF champion Hrgovic spoke of his desire for a bout on home soil in Croatia; where he has not fought since 2019.
As a result, Warren may next target Zagreb for a clash between Hrgovic and Sanchez, which should take place within the next six months.

Shawn Porter Expects a Dazzling Comeback from Canelo Against Explosive Prospect Mbilli

Canelo Alvarez is hoping to regain one of his former super-middleweight titles at the first time of asking when he makes his comeback this October against WBC champion Christian Mbilli. Two-time welterweight ruler Shawn Porter has revealed his prediction for the fight.
Alvarez lost all four of his belts at 168lbs to Terence Crawford last September and has since been sidelined due to an elbow injuryas Crawford’s retirement saw the coronation of four new world champions.
One of those beneficiaries was Mbilli, who had been in possession of the WBC Interim crown when ‘Bud’ decided to hang up the glovesallowing him to be elevated to full champion and then lined up for a showdown with Canelo.
Canelo’s remaining quality at the age of 36 is an ongoing debate amongst fans and analysts, leading many to predict an intriguing and potentially even fight. Yet, speaking on The PorterWay Podcast‘Showtime’ said that Alvarez will look like an ‘A++ fighter’ come fight night.
“Canelo truly does have that fast twitch; he is explosive, but he is explosive with speed and quickness and that fast twitch is going to get Canelo to that mark a little bit quicker.
“Yeah, I think [he can still do it] at 36. If you think about it, even though Canelo is not that ‘A++’ fighter that he used to be, he is still a solid ‘A’ and that solid ‘A’ will beat a solid ‘B’ [in Mbilli].
“That solid ‘B’ will make a solid ‘A’ look like an ‘A++’, so I think that he is going to look ‘A++’.”
Canelo-Mbilli takes place on Saturday, October 31, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The super-middleweight duo will top a ‘Mexico vs. The World’ themed bill, which could feature a bantamweight title unification between WBA champion and pound-for-pound sensation Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez and WBO titleholder Christian Medina.
