Teddy Atlas hasn’t ruled out an upset win tomorrow night, believing Teofimo Lopez can match Shakur Stevenson in terms of athleticism and perhaps even skill.
The two will fight at Madison Square Garden in Recent York, with Lopez making his fourth defense of the WBO world title.
It was in 2023 “The Takeover” overtook Josh Taylor and became the top dog at 140 pounds before defending his belt against Jamaine Ortiz, Steve Claggett and Arnold Barboza Jr.
Many believe that the Brooklyn player gave the best performance of his career, dethroning Taylor, others believe that he looked even more impressive in the match against Vasyl Lomachenko.
It was considered a huge upset in 2020, when Lopez overtook “The Matrix” and established himself as the king at 135 pounds, only to lose the crown to George Kambosos Jr. the following year.
While Lopez shined brilliantly against both Taylor and Lomachenko, he struggled to produce the same fireworks in his few other appearances.
According to Atlas, this can be explained by the 28-year-old’s attitude, which often changed depending on the level of the opponent he was facing.
However, one suspects that Lopez is giving his all ahead of the clash with Stevenson, and if that’s the case, Atlas could see their showdown play out in extremely close fashion.
I keep talking FIGHT with Teddy Atlasthe Hall of Fame coach and analyst doesn’t discount the possibility of an upset.
“Where is [Lopez] mentally? It’s up and down. His father was with him throughout his career.
“Love him [or] I hate him, his father helped him win those world titles. [But Lopez has] ups and downs, mentally.
“Where will he be [against Stevenson]? He seemed to be in a very good position when he fought Lomachenko.
“If he’s in a good situation, I think this could be the first time Shakur Stevenson has someone who can match his athletic ability.
“[Lopez] could force Shakur out of his comfort zone. I know it sounds absurd, but he could probably even match Shakur [for] box [skills]and back away from what would upset you.
While Lopez is the defending champion, Stevenson, who has a chance to become a four-time world heavyweight champion, has emerged as the overwhelming favorite ahead of their meeting.
