Owen Cooper vs. Constantin Ursu – results and post-fight report

Constantin Ursu became the fresh British welterweight champion after defeating Owen Cooper in an action-packed 12-round fight and also defending his Commonwealth title for a second time at Vaillant Live in Derby on Saturday.

Cooper (11-2, 4 KO) was coming off a 10-round victory over Chris Kongo in Nottingham last May, while Ursu (15-0, 6 KO) took the vacant Commonwealth crown last March and defended it in November, where he also won the vacant WBO European title after a wide-scoring victory over Ryan Amos at York Hall.

Ursu dominated the first four rounds, doing the cleaner work and overcoming exchanges, while Cooper was second by striking in the main round and struggled to gain a foothold in the competition.

The 25-year-old was able to time Cooper’s attacks and in the sixth round he sometimes boxed with his hands down as the fighter from Worcester desperately tried to reduce the advantage over his rival.

Cooper started fighting with more speed in the seventh round and it was his best round to date when he caught Ursu, but the Commonwealth champion refused to give up and returned to his skillful boxing in the eighth before the pair battled back and forth in round nine.

Ursu caught Cooper’s cracking right hand on the tenth throw and the 25-year-old was on his way to his feet, but heading into the final round it looked like he might have stopped the effort too delayed.

Ursu stuck to his box and impressively capped off his perfect performance with a dominant final round as the fight went down on the scorecards.

Two scores of 118-110 and the third 116-112 confirmed the great victory of the competitor from Plymouth.

McCormack dismisses Gardner

Former Olympian Luke McCormack (5-0, 3 KO) took part in the scheduled 10-round fight for the first time, and the welterweight fighter secured a comfortable points victory over the experienced Kane Gardner (18-6, 7 KO).

Two scores of 100-90 and a third of 99-92 reflected McCormack’s dominance.

Undercard remaining

Ben Fail (11-0, 6 KO) also climbed to the 10-round mark and in the seventh round he won against the tough Mason Cartwright (23-5-1, 9 KO) in a real super welterweight fight.

The only fighter to go eight rounds was in the flyweight division, where Roy Jones Jr. trained. Tony Curtis (13-1, 3 KO) defeated Jemsi Kibazange (21-15-4, 8 KO) 80-72.

Charlie Senior (4-0, 2 KO) defeated Jesus Carrasco (2-3-1) in six rounds in the first round of their featherweight match, then finished the fight in the fifth round, while heavyweight Lewis Williams (4-0, 1 KO) won every available session against Ben Vickers (3-3-1, 1 KO).

In the super lightweight division, Reese Lynch (3-0, 1 KO) defeated Dan Booth (6-20, 3 KO), and Lasha Guruli (3-0, 1 KO) did the same against Benito Sanchez Garcia (17-17-4, 5 KO).

In four-round fights, Joe Cooper (6-0) won every round against Serge Ambomo (13-71-3, 4 KO) in the middleweight and super lightweight division, Ellis Panter (1-0) impressed with his traveling support, scoring points against Garth Noot (1-16-2, 1 KO).

Jaron Ennis is the bookmakers’ main favorite to defeat Xander Zayas in their highly anticipated world title clash on Saturday in Brooklyn.

Ennis challenges Zayas for the WBO and WBA super welterweight belts at the Barclays Center live on DAZN pay-per-view.

The undefeated resident of Philadelphia enters the game as the favorite on February 11 Bet365 give the 23-year-old his first professional defeat and become world champion in two weight categories.

“Boots” has stopped 31 of his 35 opponents, including Uisma Lima in his 154-pound debut in October, and is expected to stop the Puerto Rican on 20/21.

The 28-year-old last covered this distance in 2024, and a decision victory is valued at 13/2.

Even though Zayas has taken over as unified champion, he is an underdog Bet365 at 15/04.

On Wednesday, Lewis Crocker heads to Australia to defend his IBF welterweight world title against Liam Paro for the first time.

Crocker will face Paro at the Pat Rafter Arena in Queensland, live on DAZN in the UK and Kayo Sports in Australia.

Crocker (22-0, 11 KO) became world champion in September, defeating Paddy Donovan twice before winning the rematch by split decision.

Man from Belfast recorded his second victory over Donovan after the first victory in March last year, and his rival was disqualified for hitting him after the bell.

Paro (27-1, 16 KO) is trying to become a world champion in two weight categories, having previously reigned in the super-lightweight division.

The 30-year-old won the title with a unanimous decision victory over Subriel Matias in Puerto Rico before winning the belt in his first defense against Richardson Hitchins.

The Australian has since won twice, overtaking David Papot in his last appearance in September.

McKean meets Taliva

Heavyweight Demsey McKean will look to continue his rebuild when he faces Liam Talivaa for the vacant IBF Pan Pacific title.

McKean (24-2, 16 KO) had his career cut miniature after a last-round loss to Filip Hrgovic, followed by a brutal first-round loss to Moses Itauma.

The 35-year-old southpaw returned to winning ways with back-to-back stoppage victories.

Talivaa (8-2, 4 KO) last won the IBF Oceania-Orient title, defeating Faiga Opelu by first-round stoppage.

Undercard remaining

At cruiserweight, Luke Modini (13-0, 11 KO) will likely need distance to beat Peng Qu (17-2-1, 12 KO), while Riley Candy (8-1, 5 KO) could stop Nathan Watson (11-3, 3 KO) at super middleweight.

Vegas Larfield (13-1, 9 KO) can hand Shamal Ram Anuj (11-8, 8 KO) his fourth defeat in a row in a featherweight clash.

Heavyweight Nelson Asofa-Solomon (2-0, 2 KO) can secure a third straight knockout over debutant George Burgess, and Stevan Ivic (8-0-1, 2 KO) can do the same against Caleb Tialu (3-7, 3 KO), also a heavyweight.

Prospective super welterweight fighter Jack Javed (1-0) should overtake Lance McDonald (1-5-1, 1 KO).
