Ryan Garcia looked to capture his first world title Saturday night in Las Vegas, defeating defending WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in a scheduled 12-round pay-per-view main event. Both players lacked a good performance. The popular Garcia lost his last fight to Rolly Romero last spring, and Mario Barrios recently fought a controversial fight against the legendary Manny Pacquiao. In other words, there was more than just the world title at stake this weekend.
Garcia knocked down his fighter in the first minute of the first round. Barrios got up just in time, but the tone was set. It must be admitted that Barrios had a much better second round. Still, Garcia kept punching to the body and punching strenuous. Moreover, Garcia continued to hit strenuous well into the fourth round. It was clear that he was simply much more powerful than Barrios. Plus, Barrios had a strenuous time getting to his man. Garcia hurt his man again in the 5th.
Barrios stayed on his feet, but began to look like a punching bag. Garcia just methodically broke his man. One wondered what Barrios had left behind. The defending champion hit the mat again in the sixth period, but it was ruled a slip. The fight was so one-sided that by the 8th round it was a miracle that Barrios managed to survive as long as he did. Still, he managed to survive until the championship rounds, which seemed like an achievement in itself. But at this point, it looked like Garcia was on cruise control.
The last two rounds were basically similar. Garcia completely and utterly dominated his opponent, winning the WBC welterweight title for himself and regaining some of his lost reputation. And while it was true that Barrios was not seen as a great master, he was a master nonetheless. The fact that Garcia handled him so easily says a lot about Garcia, more than about Barrios himself. If Garcia continues to look like this, his future will be really dazzling. By Saturday evening it was fully tuned. Let’s hope he looks tuned in for the rest of his career.
