Boxing is better when Ryan Garcia is in great shape
Published
3 months agoon
LAS VEGAS – “Crossroads fight” is one of the most overused terms in boxing. However, in the case of Ryan Garcia, it was more than adequate for his fight against Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title on Saturday.
A victory would allow Garcia to fulfill his enormous potential and win his first major world title after a tumultuous last few years that have left many wondering whether his desires would ever match his immense potential and unique talent. A loss would be devastating for one of the most popular fighters in all of boxing and would relegate him to one of the biggest “What if?” stories from recent memory.
Fortunately for Garcia, the first scenario came true as he dominated Barrios with a breathtaking combination of speed and power, almost finishing at the T-Mobile Arena to capture his first world championship. The victory opened up a host of lucrative opportunities for his first title defense, as he would be able to choose from an extremely enormous field of opponents who would be clamoring to get in the ring with him.
And honestly, boxing is in a better place with Garcia at the top of his game.
“I feel so grounded and composed,” Garcia said at the post-fight news conference, contrasting with a tumultuous two years in which he dealt with adversity in and out of the ring. “I don’t even think I’m even close to my ceiling yet. I think it’s going to be even crazier and I’m going to be even better than what I showed today.”
Garcia did an excellent job of dismantling Barrios, who was unable to keep up with Garcia’s exceptional speed and precise punches, making him look like a deer in the headlights for much of the fight. Garcia is a special talent with a devastating left hook. However, he displayed a complete skill set that started with a pair of overhand rights in the first round that put Barrios on the court and set the tone for the rest of the fight. Simply put, when Garcia is at his best, few can match his exceptional skills.
Garcia has always wanted to test himself against boxing’s best, but his previous attempts may have been premature as losses to Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Rolando “Rolly” Romero – as well as missing the fight against Devin Haney due to a failed test for a banned substance – hampered his progress. His performance on Saturday suggests that he is ready to fully realize his potential and face all his rivals.
“You know who I want? He’s in there. So, Shakur Stevenson, let’s go,” Garcia said in the ring after the victory. “Hey, I want to be a great champion and I’m not afraid…. I fought Devin Haney. I’ll fight Shakur Stevenson. I’ll fight anyone.”
Garcia lost to Stevenson in the amateur category in 2013 and has been waiting for revenge ever since. Given Stevenson’s recent dominance over Teofimo Lopez Jr. and winning the WBO junior welterweight title, it seems likely that a fight will occur between the two.
“I still have that chip on my shoulder,” Garcia said. “I’ve wanted this rematch for a minute. I hope we get it.”
With Garcia already establishing himself as a star and Stevenson gaining popularity with his recent performances, the fight between the two could be one of the most significant in boxing. Stevenson doesn’t see anything stopping this fight from happening next.
“He wants to fight me and I want to fight him, so it should be an straightforward thing to do,” Stevenson said during the post-fight show on DAZN. “I’ll make him an straightforward job.”
Between the trash talk and the clash of styles, the Garcia-Stevenson fight would be a close fight even without the world title. However, another option for Garcia is a rematch with WBO welterweight champion Haney, which would be a massive title unification fight with an enticing storyline.
Garcia and Haney have unfinished business, and the stakes are much higher because they are both world champions. Garcia-Haney 2 should be fought for next.
“Devin doesn’t want that,” Garcia said dismissively. – He’s terrified.
Aside from Stevenson and Haney, all fighters like Conor Benn and Romero want a piece of “KingRy.”
“Congratulations champ. See you later this year. Make sure you keep my belt balmy” – Benn, who recently left Matchroom Boxing to sign with Zuffa Boxing, posted on X after the fight.
As for Stevenson, a fight with Benn in the UK on his welterweight debut would be an ideal way to expose him to the winner of Garcia-Haney.
Years ago, Garcia was one of boxing’s four modern kings, but for Saturday’s fight, he was a king without a crown. Now that he has been crowned and taken his place as one of the rulers of the welterweight division, everything seems bigger and more significant. He already had money and fame. Now he enjoys the respect of his peers.
The stakes for Garcia are higher than ever before, and things become much more captivating when he performs at a high level.

Keyshawn Davis vs. Nahir Albright 2 Saturday night, live on DAZN

In October 2023, rising contender Keyshawn Davis entered the ring for an intense fight against Nahir Albright. In the first round of the fight, Albright used his feints and changed levels with his jab.
In the first round, Davis managed to land a well-timed right hand. Over the next few rounds, Keyshawn Davis established range and as a result, started landing his combinations.
Halfway through the 10-round fight, Davis was in complete control, consistently launching counterattacks. During the final three rounds of the fight, Albright found success in punching with his right hand.
Albright was competitive but didn’t seem to be doing enough to win rounds. At the conclusion of the 10-round contest, Davis was declared the winner by majority decision.
Two weeks later, Keyshawn Davis was confirmed to have tested positive for marijuana. Davis received a 90-day suspension and his majority victory over Nahir Albright was changed to a no-contest.
Following his match with Keyshawn Davis, Nahir Albright’s boxing career came to an end after a 19-month hiatus. In June 2025, Nahir Albright stepped back into the squared circle to face Keyshawn’s older brother, Kelvin Davis.
Albright was very aggressive as he hurt Davis in the second and fourth rounds. Albright set the pace of the fight and won a convincing victory.
After the fight ended, Keyshawn and his younger brother Keon jumped Albright backstage. According to Albright, the Davis brothers entered his locker room and Keyshawn headbutted him, leaving a lump on his right eye.
Following the incident, police escorted Keyshawn Davis from the arena. Davis was initially scheduled to headline the event, but he weighed 4.3 pounds over the legal weight limit and was stripped of his WBO world title.
After this embarrassing incident, Keyshawn Davis redeemed himself in January 2026 when he dominated Jamaine Ortiz. Now Davis is ready to take care of unfinished business on Saturday night.
Keyshawn “The Businessman” Davis didn’t look like a pro on Friday afternoon when he weighed in at 140.2 pounds. Davis stripped down to his bare essentials and weighed 140.1 pounds.
After his second failed attempt, Davis was given two hours to reach the 140-pound limit. A tiny time later, Davis returned to the scale and weighed 140 pounds.
Performance wise, Keyshawn Davis is a striking boxer who has poise, timing, a solid jab and a high ring IQ, is an elite counter puncher, has excellent punch placement and is deadly when landing body shots.
His opponent, Nahir Albright, has a quick jab, is elusive, has good footwork, uses head movement regularly, is tough and used to throwing a series of punches.
The grudge match will be held on Saturday evening, May 16, at the Scope Arena. Norfolk native Keyshawn Davis wants to make a statement to his hometown fans, but his opponent, Nahir Albright, plans to play the role of spoiler.

“I just don’t think they’re going to face the fire,” Hearn told iFL TV about Dana White and his company at Zuffa.
“You have years of catching, putting out fires and being bombarded with pellets and grenades to overcome this.
“I just don’t think they’ll be ready for the fire. You must be a little unwell.” [__] to do this. That’s what I do.”
Hearn also ridiculed White’s recent comments about boxing promotion and said the UFC president faces criticism now that he is in the boxing industry.
“He stank,” Hearn said.
“He’s not used to this. Don’t forget what we do, which is meeting people, giving interviews. But he had a narrative.
“He didn’t have anyone like that. That’s why he can’t do it and instead just says weird lyrics.”
Hearn later joked that White’s repeated comments about him actually helped escalate his visibility in the United States.
“I have to thank Dana White,” Hearn said.
“Every press conference he holds, he talks about me.
“I think there are people asking, ‘Who is this Eddie Hearn?’ Little Google, boss, Eddie Hearn.
Promoter Matchroom also rejected White’s recent claim that no promoter has staged more boxing events this year than Zuffa Boxing.
“The entire media audience responded, ‘Okay,’ and moved on to the next question,” Hearn said.
“Imagine if I said that. I would be fried by it in an instant.”
Hearn’s latest comments come as Zuffa Boxing continues to try to establish itself in the sport following months of public photos between White and several longtime boxing promoters.

Roy Jones Jr Says There’s ‘Only One Fight Ahead’ for David Benavidez: ‘You’ll Beat Everyone’

Roy Jones Jr urged David Benavidez to follow in his footsteps rather than fight Dmitry Bivol in an undisputed lithe heavyweight clash.
The “Mexican Monster” appears the sixth round ended with a victory over Gilberto Ramirezwhom he dethroned earlier this month to become three-division world champion.
However, despite winning the WBO and WBA cruiserweight titles, Benavidez expressed interest in returning to 175 pounds, where he still holds the WBC belt.
That would mean chasing unified champion Bivol, who must first defeat IBF mandatory challenger Michael Eifert on May 30.
The Russian hasn’t fought since he overtook Artur Beterbiev in February 2025, when he exacted revenge by majority decision and became the undisputed king.
Bivol then vacated the WBC title after deciding to undergo back surgery, which allowed Benavidez to be promoted from “interim” to full champion.
But rather than return to lithe heavyweight, Jones would prefer to see Benavidez test his skills at heavyweight, as he did against John Ruiz in 2003.
In a conversation with professional boxing fans, the pound-for-pound legend said that a fight with Oleksandr Usyk, who still holds the WBC, IBF and WBA titles, is the only fight that makes sense for him.
“This is the only fight for him right now and the only fight I want to see him in.
“You beat everyone in every other category, [so] go upstairs and fight Usyk. This is the best fight for him.”

While Benavidez has expressed a desire to challenge Usyk at heavyweight, he has said he won’t be ramping up his weight gain anytime soon and is therefore much more likely to receive his next assignment against Bivol.
It then remains to be seen whether Usyk will stay in the sport long enough to face the 29-year-old, which could end up fighting another heavyweight champion.
