Back from Matchroom, but still unconfirmed
Hearn wants to put IBF welterweight champion Hitchins in some huge fights in 2026. He mentioned these players: Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, Shakur Stevenson, Rolando “Rolly” Romero and Lewis Crocker.
For the Brooklyn native Hitchins to be taken seriously as an opponent for most of these fighters, he needs to have some wins over credible, top-rated fighters.
When will Paydays start running the route?
He has yet to beat anyone who fits this description. He turned his nose up at quality players like Gary Antuanne Russell, Subriel Matias and Ernesto Mercado, to name a few. He is more focused on getting bigger paydays.
Hitchins was in negotiations to fight Keyshawn Davis for the Teofimo Lopez vs. Shakur Stevenson undercard on January 31, 2026. The fight did not take place due to financial reasons. Hitchins reportedly asked for $2.5 million and Keyshawn wanted $2 million.
“Keith and I have now started talking again [Connolly] and Hitchins. I think we can cooperate. I think he’s a great newborn fighter,” said promoter Eddie Hearn KGTV about Richardson Hitchins.
“Even though we did a lot for him, he performed impeccably. Last time, of course, he was great against Kambosos and I think he’s a guy who can blend in with Teofimo, Shakur and Haney. You have [Lewis] Crocker,” Hearn said. “That’s true [Rolando Rolly] Romero.
Kambosos win in the right context
Hitchins defeats George Kambosos Jr. via eighth-round knockout on June 14, 2025. He basks in the praise he receives from fans for this victory.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t a good enough W to convince the huge names to agree to fight him. He has some top talent to beat, and Kambosos is widely seen as a player in decline.
“All these guys weigh 140 and 147 pounds because I think at some point he’ll go up to 147. But he’s an incredible fighter,” Hearn said of Hitchins.
Fights that will change the conversation
We’ll see if Hearn can produce fights for Hitchins in 2026. It would lend a hand if he took on some mighty fighters like Frank Martin and Mercado to build his reputation. Fans want Richardson to perform against the best, and he hasn’t.
