Fight of the Year 2025: Conor Benn-Chris Eubank 1

Sometimes – and admittedly it’s not very often. – the fight will live up to its notoriety. This was the case when Conor Benn faced Chris Eubank in a fight that was definitely considered the fight of the year 2025. Both fighters were members of boxing royalty. But it was more than that… it was a family dispute. “At one point it seemed like the fight would never become a reality,” Boxing Insider wrote at the time. “But on Saturday, Chris Eubank and Conor Benn, whose fathers had once thrown themselves into a classic, now plunged into what will likely be seen as their own classic.”

The fight was fierce, full of energy and almost grim determination from both fighters. This was nothing modern. It was a real boxing fight, and a very good one at that, so good that you had to admire the skill and endurance of each fighter. “By the ninth,” wrote the Boxing Insider, “it was worth wondering how on earth each man was able to keep up with the roaring crowd.” Without a doubt, Benn and Eubank exceeded all expectations until the final bell rang. Eubank came away with a decision victory, but – as cliché as it may sound – there were no losers in this match.

Of course, there was a rematch later that year, which Benn won easily. It still didn’t have the thrill of the first fight. However, such battles usually put a lot of strain on the warriors. With that in mind, both fighters can now hang up the gloves and will still be remembered for the first fight they fought in April in England.

Of course, a career is more than just one fight, but when it comes to the type of fight that Benn and Eubank had, it’s challenging to deny that it won’t live long in the collective memory. It was often seen as an English fight rather than an international one. And honestly, that may have been the case when we took the field. Benn and Eubank, however, had everyone on their feet, fighting exceptionally and in an stimulating manner. It was the kind of fight that had you leaning back in your chair with your mouth open. There aren’t many fights like this – at least not these days – so when someone actually loses, they’re likely to be remembered.

The Brit was dropped twice by massive underdog Prenga in the opening round of their clash in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, but ‘AJ’ managed to recover and record a big knockdown of his own in the second round that resulted in the stoppage victory.

Joshua and Usyk now train together, having famously had two battles for the unified world heavyweight title in 2021 and 2022, and the Ukrainian has had his say on his stablemate’s victory over Prenga.

Tony Bellew Reviews Anthony Joshua's Comeback Victory Over Kristian Prenga After Knockdown Drama

Anthony Joshua may have earned a knockout win over Kristian Prenga but the fight certainly didn’t unfold as most people expected.

Joshua was facing the Albanian in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it looked like a massive upset could be on the cards when he was dropped twice in the opening round.

‘AJ’ was able to recover and went on to secure a second round knockout victory to prevent the shock lossseemingly paving the way for the battle against Tyson Fury later this year.

One man who was ringside to witness the battle was former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellewand he praised Joshua’s ability to turn things around in the fight after describing it as ‘chaos’.

“We predicted round two but I don’t think we foresaw that. That was chaos. He doesn’t see the uppercut coming and finds himself on the floor without knowing how he got there.

“The second one he did see it coming and he was able to clench down on the jaw. He got up and then the experience that he has he used tonight because he tied him up. Against Andy Ruiz he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t know how to do that, but tonight he did.

“He showed once again there is no quit. To be that hurt in the first round and get up, that’s the recoveries of power. People talk about your chin, but it’s not, it’s the level of fitness that gets you up from the floor.

“When Joshua gets a fighter hurt he’s the best finisher in the division. Whenever he hurts someone they’re gone. I haven’t seen him drop anybody and they survive, only Andy Ruiz. He’s a ruthless finisher.”

The clash between Joshua and Fury is now expected to be announced soon for later this year, after Fury won his own interim fight on Friday by defeating Mariusz Wach.
