Oleksandr Usyk could find himself in Anthony Joshua’s corner in championship fights, the Ukrainian team said.
Joshua (28-4, 25 KO) is training at Usyk’s base in Spain before his fight with Jake Paul, which will take place on December 19 in Miami.
Having been linked to Ben Davison since before his fight with Otto Wallin in December 2023, Joshua made the decision to join Usyk’s team earlier this year.
Although he has not trained with Usyk in recent weeks, Joshua’s relationship with the team will continue after the fight with Paul.
“This cooperation is not about one opponent. It is about AJ’s development” – Sergey Lapin, Usyk’s friend and sports director of his team said Ready to Fight.
Asked if Usyk could be in Joshua’s corner for upcoming fights, Lapin said: “I think so in terms of championship fights.”
Usyk and Joshua fought twice in 2021 and 2022, with the Ukrainian winning both on points, but they now share a amiable relationship outside the ring.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, told ESPN that the former two-time heavyweight champion originally planned to go to Usky’s camp for a few days but ended up staying.
“I was in Dubai with him [Joshua]and when I left, he packed his bags and flew to Valencia and said, “I have 10 days.” And he just never came back,” Hearn said.
“He’s been there for about 6 weeks. He loves it. They work him to the bone there. [Joshua] he said: “I have never worked the way I work 1765387730.’
“It’s probably Usyk who can last 12 rounds like an absolute machine. I think this fight will be good, it gave him the opportunity to have a training camp.
I hope he comes out and just throws ice to this guy [Paul]what we all expect. Then in 2026 we will be able to deal with earnest matters.”
The hope is that there will finally be a gigantic fight between Joshua and Tyson Fury next year, but Lapin said they are not preparing for one fight or one opponent, but rather helping Joshua develop.
“Nothing happens by accident. AJ is someone who always tries to evolve. That’s why he came; he wants modern solutions and candid work that will take him to a higher level,” Lapin said.
“Everything is being done step by step. There is much more work ahead of us than talks. If anything [Fury] the fight will take place, the ring will give the only answer that matters.”
