Boxing history will be made on Saturday, July 11 at San Francisco’s Civic Center Plaza when iVB Boxing, Sampson Boxing and Paco Presents present “HISTORY IN THE MAKING: World Boxing Championship” – a truly inclusive fight night that pits world-class boxers from around the world, representing many of the city’s energetic communities, against each other in featured fights.

In an unprecedented boxing milestone that highlights the inclusivity of the event, emerging openly gay Uruguayan boxer Oscar Bonifacino (4-0, 3 KO) will face undefeated featherweight Raúl Escudero (4-0) of Navarre, Spain in a six-round co-main event. In the main event, WBO flyweight champion Anthony “Princesa” Olascuaga (12-1, 9 KO) from Los Angeles, Mexico will defend his title against Andy Dominguez (13-1, 6 KO) from Las Vegas, Mexico.

The evening will also feature dynamic duty Philippine Army soldier and super featherweight world champion Charly Suarez (18-0, 10 KO) of Manila, Philippines, who will face Manuel “Tino” Avila (26-2-1, 9 KO) of Fairfield, California in an invigorating 10-round fight. Additionally, Italian-American Vito Mielnicki Jr. (23-1, 13 KO) of Roseland, Recent Jersey, will defend his WBC, IBF and WBO regional middleweight titles against Gerardo Luis Vergara (21-1, 14 KO) of Bahía Blanca, Argentina.

Ed Pereira, iVB’s CEO, visionary pioneer and marketing genius, says his goal is to reach a record attendance of more than 132,135 fans (a record set by Tony Zale against Billy Pryor at Juneau Park in Milwaukee in 1941), the largest crowd ever gathered at a boxing event.

“It will be… a spectacle the likes of which the boxing world has never seen before,” Pereira said. “An event created for this city and its community.” San Francisco has always been a city with something special, and on July 11 it will become the epicenter of world boxing.

Legendary promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, who first saw the potential of then-unknown boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, says he now sees the potential of Pereira’s novel design.

“Ed has a vision for the sport that I completely believe in,” Lewkowicz said. “When he approached me with this event, I immediately saw its potential: something that had never been seen before in the world of boxing. Together, we will give San Francisco and the world an unforgettable night. This is not just a fight card; it is a statement. I have dedicated my entire career to supporting projects that others have abandoned, and I have always been right. “This time will be no different.”

Paco Damian, a key figure in boxing in Northern California for decades and founder of Paco Presents, will bring his experience to the event. Damian says he wants to offer Northern California fans something truly novel.

“In 2009, I promoted my first boxing event in the Bay Area. “This area is my home,” said Paco Damian. “I am honored to be a part of this event, especially with my dear friend and long-time partner Sampson Lewkowicz and Ed Pereira and his incredible team.”

Two of boxing’s most famed ambassadors lent their support to this ambitious initiative: Grand Champion Christy Martin and legendary announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr., both Hall of Fame members, agreed to serve as presenters and announcers for the event.

Christy Martin, known as “Coal Miner’s Daughter”, is a pioneering boxer who broke barriers and became one of the most recognizable figures in women’s boxing of the 1990s, both for her bravery in the ring and her courageous fight outside of it. Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney portrayed Christy in a recent film. Martin was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.

“I am extremely honored to be a part of this historic event with…” “IVB, Sampson and Paco,” Christy Martin said. “I am here to support boxing around the world and especially offer my genuine support to Oscar Bonafacino!”

Hailing from Santa Monica, California, Jimmy Lennon Jr., nicknamed “Elegant”, is widely known for his fluency, elegance and impeccable pronunciation of the names of foreign boxers in their native languages. Among the many memorable moments in his career, he participated in the hidden fight Julio César Chávez vs. Greg Haugen in Mexico City, in front of 135,000 enthusiastic fans. Lennon announced Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield’s ring entry for the infamous “Bite Fight” and Tyson’s stunning knockout by Buster Douglas in Tokyo.

“I feel fortunate to have been able to take part in some of the most critical boxing events in history,” Jimmy Lennon Jr. said. “I’m excited to be a part of it.”

On Saturday in Houston, Texas, O’Shaquie Foster will put his WBC super featherweight world title on the line against Raymond Ford.

Foster (24-3, 12 KO) will face Ford (18-1-1, 8 KO) at the Fertitta Center.

Foster is making a second defense of the title he regained when he overtook Robson Conceicao in a rematch in 2024, following a controversial split decision loss almost four months earlier.

The 32-year-old Texan dominated Stephen Fulton Jr in December to win the WBC interim lightweight crown, but gave it up to return to 130 pounds.

Former featherweight world champion Ford hopes to become a two-division world champion.

The 27-year-old, who lost the WBA 126-pound title to Nick Ball, has won three straight since moving up to super featherweight, most recently a unanimous decision win over Abraham Nova in August.

Peter Fury revealed his conversation with referee Mark Lyson following Rico Verhoeven’s controversial defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in Egypt on Saturday.

Former kickboxing champion Verhoeven appeared to be on track to spark a celebrated altercation until he was dropped dramatically by Usyk and then waved off by Lyson in the 11th round, just as the bell sounded at the Pyramids of Giza.

Verhoeven’s trainer Fury was on the same plane to Britain on Sunday as the referee, who claimed he did not hear the bell.

“Was the referee wrong? Of course,” Fury said IFLTV.

“The referee was on the flight with me on the way back, so I talked to him.

“The best way to resolve any dispute is to ask the person who did it.

“I said, ‘You made a mistake.’

“And he told me what is very critical: ‘Peter, I didn’t hear the bell.’

“I believe now because I didn’t hear the bell either.

“I told him I thought he made a mistake.

“We shook hands, it’s sport, it’s boxing and that’s what it is.

“I think he realized he made a mistake.

“He said, ‘I did what I thought I had to do. He was shaking and I’m there to protect the player.'”

Although many believed the Dutchman had a clear advantage before the break, two judges declared the fight a draw, with another calling Verhoeven ahead when the fight was stopped.

Usyk defended his unified heavyweight world titles and faced the WBC interim champion, Agit Kabayel after the fight.

This was confirmed by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman Professional boxing fans that Kabayel needs his chance to fight Usyk before any rematch with Verhoeven, who was fighting as a professional boxer for only the second time.

Sulaiman also confirmed that Verhoeven will receive a WBC ranking after his stunning fight against the two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.

Bivol decided to relinquish the WBC crown in pursuit of a third fight with Beterbiev, which did not take place, but David Benavidez upgraded to full master.
