Floyd Mayweather compares current fighter to Pernell Whitaker: ‘It’s about skill’

Floyd Mayweather says ‘unbelievable’ fighter has been forgotten by UK fans: “Possibly the best ever”

Shakur Stevenson’s defensive genius and IQ have seen him compared to some of the greatest boxing champions of all time, and Floyd Mayweather Jr has now added his own support.

Stevenson is preparing for the biggest fight of his career on January 31, when he faces WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden. A victory would make Stevenson a four-division world champion and cement his status as one of the best fighters in the sport.

So far, Stevenson (24-0, 11 KO) has never looked like losing in nine world title fights, although his last fight against William Zepeda was probably his toughest test. Zepeda tried to impose his aggressive style but was overtaken and outplayed by Stevenson’s superior skill.

Mayweather, who retired undefeated after 50 fights, sees parallels with Stevenson’s dominance and praised the American for his reign at 135 pounds, where he has held the WBC title since November 2023. Ring Magazine DiaryMayweather put Stevenson in the same conversation as one of boxing’s greatest defensive champions.

“The most effective fighter at 135 pounds would be Shakur Stevenson, without a doubt. It’s really all about skill. Pernell Whitaker wasn’t a great fighter, but he was very exhilarating, very tough and fought anyone. And Shakur is trying to do the same. He wants to fight the best he can get.”

Whitaker, known as “Sweet Pea”, he was one of the most technically gifted fighters of his generation. A world champion in four weight classes and an Olympic gold medalist, in his career spanning the 1980s and 1990s, he dominated the lightweight, welterweight, welterweight and delicate middleweight divisions. Known for his elusive moves and defensive magic, Whitaker had the ability to control the pace of a fight and frustrate opponents with near-perfect timing and anticipation – traits Mayweather sees in Stevenson today.

If Stevenson manages to beat Lopez at the Garden, he won’t just add another belt – he’ll be able to secure his place among the sport’s elite, following in the footsteps of the same fighters he’s often compared to.

Tony Bellew Reviews Anthony Joshua's Comeback Victory Over Kristian Prenga After Knockdown Drama

Anthony Joshua may have earned a knockout win over Kristian Prenga but the fight certainly didn’t unfold as most people expected.

Joshua was facing the Albanian in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it looked like a massive upset could be on the cards when he was dropped twice in the opening round.

‘AJ’ was able to recover and went on to secure a second round knockout victory to prevent the shock lossseemingly paving the way for the battle against Tyson Fury later this year.

One man who was ringside to witness the battle was former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellewand he praised Joshua’s ability to turn things around in the fight after describing it as ‘chaos’.

“We predicted round two but I don’t think we foresaw that. That was chaos. He doesn’t see the uppercut coming and finds himself on the floor without knowing how he got there.

“The second one he did see it coming and he was able to clench down on the jaw. He got up and then the experience that he has he used tonight because he tied him up. Against Andy Ruiz he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t know how to do that, but tonight he did.

“He showed once again there is no quit. To be that hurt in the first round and get up, that’s the recoveries of power. People talk about your chin, but it’s not, it’s the level of fitness that gets you up from the floor.

“When Joshua gets a fighter hurt he’s the best finisher in the division. Whenever he hurts someone they’re gone. I haven’t seen him drop anybody and they survive, only Andy Ruiz. He’s a ruthless finisher.”

The clash between Joshua and Fury is now expected to be announced soon for later this year, after Fury won his own interim fight on Friday by defeating Mariusz Wach.
