Eddie Hearn said Anthony Joshua is “in no rush to get back on track” as the boxer continues his recovery from the car crash that killed two close friends.
The former world heavyweight champion was injured in an accident in Nigeria on December 29 that killed Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.
Ghami was his strength and conditioning coach and Ayodele was his trainer.
Joshua, who was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, was on holiday in Nigeria following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami 10 days before the accident.
His longtime promoter Hearn posted a photo of him sitting next to Joshua in the gym on Sunday, giving an update on the fighter’s mindset.
“It’s great to catch up with @anthonyjoshua today. His resilience and strength is inspiring. The loss is challenging and he needs time to get back on track, but he said he’s truly grateful for all the support and love shown to Latz and Sina,” Hearn said in a statement write to X.
This week, Joshua returned to the gym, posting a video on Snapchat showing him working out, hitting pads, working out and riding an exercise bike.
After Paul was knocked out in the sixth round of a controversial fight in December, there was talk in British boxing about the prospect of a showdown between Joshua and compatriot Tyson Fury. However, a fatal car accident left Joshua’s future in the sport unclear.
Hearn has previously said he believes Joshua will return to boxing when he has time to recover.
“He will need time physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually before he makes a decision about his future. I think he will want to return to boxing, but it will be his decision when the time is right,” Hearn told Sky Sports.
“It’s certainly not a conversation I’ll be having with him anytime soon. The only conversation I have is, ‘Is everything OK?’ and sometimes you find that people pretend everything is fine, but what happened to him is not normal and heartbreaking for everyone involved.
I believe he will make a decision when the time is right and you will hear it from him. This is the only voice you should listen to on this matter, and we will give him time to make this decision and heal.
