Boxer suffers the 100th defeat in his career, and the journeymen’s incredible streak continues

Published

on

Jake Pollard suffered his 100th defeat in professional boxing after a technical knockout in the second round in the Joseph Parker vs. Fabio Wardley fight. Hassan Ishaq extended his perfect start to his career by improving to 3-0 with victory over the veteran journeyman at the O2 Arena.

The 33-year-old, who works as a farrier – a blacksmith specializing in horseshoes – is currently on a 51-game losing streak, with his only triumph coming in July 2023 against Louis Smithson. In October alone, Pollard suffered four defeats, the last time he appeared on the biggest stage in sports.

Pollard was knocked down in the second round when Ishaq landed an uppercut that penetrated his defense. The Yorkshire fighter fell to his knees as referee Mark Bates assessed his condition before stopping the fight.

The journeyman has already competed 17 times this calendar year, with three more fights scheduled for the coming weeks, although they are transient. Pollard’s boxing journey is quite unusual in that his only victory came during a 49-fight winless streak before he began his current 51-fight losing streak.

Recalling his triumph over rookie Smithson two years ago, the then 31-year-old noted: “For me it wasn’t much different, it was just another day at the office.”

“Don’t get me wrong, it was nice to tell my son I won for a change, but there were a lot of other fights that people thought I won or at least drew, and I wasn’t even given a chance for a round.

Nevertheless, I liked the fight and we both left the ring without stern injuries, and that’s the most critical thing for me. There is a saying that for us journeymen, you have to knock them out to get a draw.

“Everyone who saw the result asked me why I reacted behind schedule to the victory, and that was because I had very similar fights in the past, and they weren’t even close on the scorecards. Fortunately, on Saturday we had a very fair judge who gave a fair decision.”

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez believes a long-awaited clash with Naoya Inoue is “inevitable” ahead of his return on Saturday.

Bam Rodriguez is closing in on one weight class for undisputed super bantamweight champion Inoue when he fights Antonio Vargas for the WBA bantamweight world title on Saturday in Arizona live on DAZN.

A meeting between the pair would pit two true pound-for-pound superstars against each other, and the Texan believes the clash will definitely happen, with Ring magazine owner Turki Alalshikh already expressing interest in promoting the fight.

“I know that when this Inoue fight happens, the fans will be in for a great night of boxing,” the 26-year-old said Ring Magazine.

“People are already talking so much about this fight that it is inevitable at this point.

“And I feel like when the time comes, it will be a great fight, probably one of the best in boxing history.”

Inoue retained his undisputed crown thanks to A unanimous decision victory over Japanese rival Junto Nakatani last month.

Bam is the current unified super flyweight world champion and is expected to return to 115 pounds to challenge Andrew Moloney for the undisputed title.

The Texan admits he would like to join forces with WBC bantamweight champion Takuma Inoue, Inoue’s younger brother, if he defeats Vargas at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale.

“I think that’s the perfect storyline for this fight,” he said.

“I think it’s almost the perfect storyline for Inoue’s fight, where he first beats his brother and then fights the other brother.”

Bam, who is the overwhelming favorite among bookmakers, is fighting for the first time since the unification of the super flyweight division following a 10th-round knockout of Fernando Martinez in November in Riyad.

Vargas first defended his WBA belt last July, but lost to Daigo Higa.
