Conor Benn received the news earlier today, and the WBC confirmed that he will be the mandatory challenger to win the Ryan Garcia vs. WBC welterweight champion Marrios Barrios fight on February 21, 2026.

Conor Benn jumps into the mandatory spot

Benn (24-1, 14 KO) will be there jammer here Ryan (24-2, 20 KO) hopes to next face Devin Haney in February if he wins the WBC belt from Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KO).

A conversation on the sidelines is already brewing

Turki Alalshikh may have to step in to convince Benn to stand down and allow a Garcia-Haney rematch if Ryan wins. It may take a tiny fortune to force the already wealthy Conor Benn to step down. He wants to win the WBC belt and has an excellent chance to win it from the winner of Garcia-Barrios.

This morning, Wednesday, December 3, at WBC revealed at their convention in Bangkok, Thailand that Conor Benn became the mandatory #1 for the winner of the Barrios vs. Garcia fight.

Benn’s promotion has sparked a backlash from fans who believe he doesn’t deserve to be moved to the mandatory No. 1 spot at 147 pounds considering he hasn’t fought at welterweight since 2022. However, he looked like pure gold in his last fight, defeating Chris Eubank Jr. middleweight via 12-round unanimous decision in their November 15 rematch in London.

Pacquiao and Cissokho? A complex transition

If not Benn, the alternatives above him are bleak, with these three:

  1. Manny Pacquiao
  2. Souleymane Cissokho
  3. Raul Curiel

Why the WBC chose Benn over the pitch

For fans and the WBC, who would you rather see next for Ryan Garcia vs. winner Mario Barrios? One of the three or Conor Benn? It’s understandable why the WBC decided to make Benn the mandatory challenger because he brings value.

“I just got the news that I’ve taken the No. 1 spot in the WBC rankings, which is mandatory to win the WBC title,” Benn said on the show X. “I will be watching the Barrios vs. Garcia fight closely. I want a winner early next year. This WBC world title is mine. I will come for this belt and Britain will have a fresh world champion. Let’s have it.”

The Brit was dropped twice by massive underdog Prenga in the opening round of their clash in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, but ‘AJ’ managed to recover and record a big knockdown of his own in the second round that resulted in the stoppage victory.

Tony Bellew Reviews Anthony Joshua's Comeback Victory Over Kristian Prenga After Knockdown Drama

Anthony Joshua may have earned a knockout win over Kristian Prenga but the fight certainly didn’t unfold as most people expected.

Joshua was facing the Albanian in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it looked like a massive upset could be on the cards when he was dropped twice in the opening round.

‘AJ’ was able to recover and went on to secure a second round knockout victory to prevent the shock lossseemingly paving the way for the battle against Tyson Fury later this year.

One man who was ringside to witness the battle was former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellewand he praised Joshua’s ability to turn things around in the fight after describing it as ‘chaos’.

“We predicted round two but I don’t think we foresaw that. That was chaos. He doesn’t see the uppercut coming and finds himself on the floor without knowing how he got there.

“The second one he did see it coming and he was able to clench down on the jaw. He got up and then the experience that he has he used tonight because he tied him up. Against Andy Ruiz he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t know how to do that, but tonight he did.

“He showed once again there is no quit. To be that hurt in the first round and get up, that’s the recoveries of power. People talk about your chin, but it’s not, it’s the level of fitness that gets you up from the floor.

“When Joshua gets a fighter hurt he’s the best finisher in the division. Whenever he hurts someone they’re gone. I haven’t seen him drop anybody and they survive, only Andy Ruiz. He’s a ruthless finisher.”

The clash between Joshua and Fury is now expected to be announced soon for later this year, after Fury won his own interim fight on Friday by defeating Mariusz Wach.
