Anthony Joshua spoke publicly for the first time since a December car crash in Nigeria that killed two of his friends.
Joshua was involved in an accident that occurred on December 29 near Lagos, Nigeria, in which his two friends, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, died.
On Thursday, the former two-time heavyweight champion published an emotional post YouTube video in which he first mentioned this incident.
“The last time I talked to you was in Miami. We had so many plans for the end of 2025 and we had a mission,” Joshua said.
“We came home, went to visit our families and everything just turned upside down. God is the best planner. We can plan as best we can, but this was an unforeseen circumstance that was beyond our control.
“Even their parents, uncles, cousins, friends and I didn’t lose two great people, we lost people we care about very much and who played a key role in our lives.
“It’s demanding. It’s really demanding. I’m not going to sit here and show all my emotions. Nowadays it’s effortless to microanalyze people and make judgments, but I know how I feel and that’s all that matters to me. I know what my duty is.”
Joshua, 36, held back tears as he talked about his friends. In the video’s caption, he admitted that the speech “took a few rehearsals.”
“It’s a shame. It’s a shame… But there’s another side to it. What can I say,” said an emotional Joshua.
“One day my time will come and I won’t be afraid anymore. … At all. It’s comforting to have two brothers on the other side. I’ve lost people before, but I don’t think I’ve lost people like that. … My left and right, you know?”
“I walked with giants who protected me.”
Joshua thanked the people for their messages of support and promised to fulfill the dreams of his “brothers.”
“My goal is to continue to facilitate them achieve their goals. Even if they are not here physically when I pray, I know that spiritually they will facilitate me survive. It’s not just physical strength that will facilitate me survive; it will take a lot.”
“A lot of strength from the Higher Power, so I will definitely pray and facilitate them fulfill their dreams for their families.
“It’s not just me, there’s a whole team of us.… A whole brotherhood, a whole sisterhood that will facilitate fulfill their legacies and dreams.
“I don’t think I mentioned the love and appreciation. I, they, their families, acknowledged it all. We thanked the thousands, maybe even millions, around the world who showed them both so much love.”
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s longtime promoter at Matchroom Boxing, said last week that Joshua was “in no rush to get back on track” as the boxer continues his recovery from the accident.
