Analysis of the Khamzat Chimaev: why is the unquestionable analysis of the Master’s Master UFC, Championkhamzat Chimaev: Why is the undisputed Master of the UFC medium scale
Published
12 months agoon
From the moment Khamzat Chimaev came to the UFC in 2020, both fans and analysts knew that they were watching something else. With a mixture of suffocating wrestling, strict aggression and fearless “no one, anywhere, at any time” Chimaev looked intended for size. At UFC 319 in Chicago, he finally realized in the years of noise, dominating the Dricus du Plessis to win the mastery in the weight of the average UFC.
Chimaev’s victory was not only decisive – it was historical. He scored 529 UFC strokes and controlled the defending master for almost 22 of 25 minutes. For Du Plessis, which had his third title, it was a nightmare he couldn’t escape.
So how did Chimaev evolve from a breakthrough perspective to the undisputed king? The answer consists in a sporadic world -class mixture, impact improvement and unwavering mental strength.
1. Early career and a breakthrough of the UFC
The story of Chimaeva begins in Chechnya, where he was born from moving to Sweden as a teenager. There he tightened his wrestling skills, winning the national championship and building a base that would later determine his MMA style.
When he entered the UFC in 2020, he did not waste time on noise. During the first three fights, he recorded two finish in just 10 days at “Fight Island” and stunning 17-second knockout of Gerald Meerschaert. Then the dismantling of Li Jingliang appeared, where he raised his opponent, carried him through the cage and hit him before he strangled him.
Fans quickly approached his constant approach. His promise fights “whoever, anywhere, at any time,” not only says – he supported her to the octopus.
2. Wrestling as a cornerstone

In his core, Chimaev is a wrestler who uses constant pressure to drown opponents. His wrestling chain, the ability to mix single and double legs and suffocating the highest control make it one of the most tough fighters in the world to prepare.
Opponents often describe the impression that they face him as “getting stuck under a humid blanket that you can’t move.” When Chimaev caught his leg or body lock, it’s just a matter of time before his opponent hits the canvas.
We saw it against Li Jingliang, where Chimaeva control looked effortlessly. Even the elite fighters, such as Gilbert Burns, struggled with his pace – and although Burns pushed him to the most tough test, he could still not stop him for a long time.
At UFC 319 this set of skills has reached fresh heights. Against Plessis, Chimaev secured 12 overthrows in 17 attempts, pulling the South African champion to the mat in the first minute of each round. He kept the control for 21 minutes and 40 seconds-a second place in UFC history. Wrestling was not just his plan; It was a game plan, a backup plan and an insurance policy in one.
3. Strinking improvements and stand-up plays
When Chimaev came for the first time, the critics pointed to his hit as the only possible hole in their game. Sometimes he looked like an adventurer who wants to replace wild blows. But over the years his stand-up matured.
Now he uses a inflexible stab to set the pace, excessive right to threaten the damage, as well as the ground and pound that opens opponents to undergo or further penalties. In Gilbert Burns’s fight, we saw how he was tested on the exchange – a reminder that it could absorb damage and continue to push forward.
On UFC 319 his impact was associated with wrestling. The volume itself was stunning – 529 strikes, UFC record. Many of them came from a ground and pound, but showed his ability to blend the strikes into control, preventing a lot of plessis from finding his rhythm.
4. Mental endurance and IQ fight
Part of what Chimaev is so risky is his unwavering confidence. He does not overly complicate the strategy – his way of thinking is to apply his game until the opponents are cracking.
Against Burns, he showed immunity after testing in his pocket. Against Du Plessis he showed mastery of the threatened. In round 5 Du Plessis almost closed the cast of the guillotine, closest to the theft of momentum. Chimaev is not panic; He left and resumed control, as if nothing had happened.
This adaptability – switching between impact and wrestling, between aggression and patience – reflects its high IQ fight. Not only fights strenuous; He fights wisely.
5. Key fights that defined his path to the title
- Gerald Manchschaert (2020): 17-second knockout, which proved his striking power.
- Li Jingliang (2021): A master class in wrestling domination, which strengthened his reputation as a nightmare.
- Gilbert Burns (2022): His most tough test in which he showed his heart, toll and a desire to trade fire.
- UFC 319 vs. Dricus du Plessis (2025): The moment of crowning – a skewed beating of the prevailing master to finally get UFC gold.

Each of these fights built a layer of Chimaev’s evolution, turning raw talent into a refined weapon ready for the championships.
6. Why are opponents struggling with him
Fighters facing Chimaev have a control list of problems and none is uncomplicated to solve:
- Wrestling pressure closes the strikers before they can free the weapon.
- Strinking improvements force grapplers to respect his hands.
- Cardio and relentless pace consume even the most tough opponents.
- Mental Edge leaves fighters who guess before and during the fight.
Du Plessis was no exception. Despite his power and heart, he could not solve the puzzle. Until the end, the results of judges 50–44 reflected how the challenge was insurmountable.
Application
The journey of Khamzat Chimaeva to the UFC average title was nothing but ordinary. From his Chechen roots to the meteoric growth of UFC, failure outside the cage, and finally the dominant performance at UFC 319, Chimaev proved that it is as good as advertised.
With an unbeaten 15–0 record and style that interrupts opponents physically and mentally, the question is now whether someone can stop him. Can Du Plessis get a rematch? Will Israel Adesanya return to the next run? Could the rising pretenders like Shavkat Rakhmonovov test it if they rise?
For now, one thing is certain: Chimaev is not only a fresh Master of Medium UFC – it is a problem for the whole division. UFC 319 was a night in which he became everything he promised noise and more.

Ultimate Fighting Championship title.

retain the strawweight belt in Philadelphia. She's now name-dropped
who could be next in line for a title shot.
Mackenzie Dern names Weili Zhang, Tatiana Suarez and Lupita
Godinez as possible UFC title challengers
When asked in a post-fight interview who she could face next, Dern
initially admitted she's unsure. She claimed the next challenger
for the 115-pound throne could be Tatiana
Suarez (12-1), Lupita
Godinez (14-6), or former champ Weili Zhang
(26-4).
“I know there's Tatiana, Weili… Who else? Lupita could be coming up
pretty soon,†Dern said.

after a hard-fought five-round battle. The Russian retained the
welterweight championship and extended his winning streak in the
UFC to 17 straight victories, a new record. Nevertheless, the
challenger is encouraged by his performance and what the future
holds for him.

stronger
Garry believes his performance against Makhachev showed that he
belongs at the highest level of the sport.
“Tonight wasn't my night,†Garry said on Instagram. “I feel great,
I did great, Islam was just better than me tonight and that's OK. I
want everybody who loves me and supports me and wants to see me do
better; I want you to know that I'm going to be back.â€
The former
Cage Warriors champ then emphasized that he's yet to enter his
prime and still pushed the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter to the
limit.
“I'm not disheartened by this,†Garry continued. “I'm bulletproof
in my mind. I'm 28 years of age; I just fought maybe the greatest
fighter we've ever seen in this sport and I pushed him to the
f*cking wire and I'm so proud of myself and I'm so proud of my team
and everything that we've done. I'm so proud of what I've done in
this world and who I've become. Nobody's stopping me. Tonight was
not my night.â€
Garry then congratulated Makhachev before revealing his excitement
in future matchups.
“Islam, your team, congratulations,†he added. “Your guys did
amazing. I have nothing but love and respect for everything you

There's plenty of matchups in this sport, plenty of fun matchups
that I'm excited for. We'll be back and we'll be better than ever.
I love you all, let's go, baby.â€

before suffering his first defeat against Shavkat
Rakhmonov. Garry bounced back with wins over Belal

Makhachev has nothing but respect for Ian Garry and
the Irishman's preparation for their title bout.
The
Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight king retained his
belt with a hard-fought victory over Garry in the main event of
UFC
330 in Philadelphia. The challenger pushed the champ to the
limit and the latter recently revealed what made the five-rounder
so challenging.
How Ian Garry's patient approach frustrated Islam Makhachev at
UFC 330
Makhachev claims Garry's lack of output on the feet made the
matchup a tricky puzzle to solve.
“Very hard to fight with someone who stands… No working, just
standing and waiting,†Makhachev said in a post-fight interview.
“Very difficult. He prepared himself well for the fight; he gave me
a hard time, but no matter. From the first second to the last
second, I am going to war. I am going to win, doesn't matter
how.â€
Later, at the post-fight presser, Makhachev revealed that Garry
caught him with an inadvertent headbutt during one of their
grappling exchanges.
“He gave me a very hard headbutt,†Makhachev said. “It's OK. Hard
fight. It makes you improve and I feel I improved.â€
Makhachev edged the final round to seal a closely contested
decision, breaking the record for the longest win streak in UFC
history. He's now targeting Carlos
Prates for his second title defense at 170 pounds.
“From the first second to last second, I am
going to war. I am going to win.â€Islam
