Boxing’s youngest male world champion Xander Zayas announces ‘history-making’ unification fight

Four super welterweight world champions will become three world champions early next year when Xander Zayas faces Abass Barou.

On January 31, in Coliso de Puerto Rico in San Juan, WBO champion Xander Zayas will be looking to prove he is the best 154-pound fighter in the world as he chases his 23rd straight victory.

The 23-year-old is currently the youngest men’s world champion (Camila Zamorano holds that distinction among women’s champions) and can add a WBA title to his collection if he defeats fellow champion Abass Baraou.

In July this year, two months before his 23rd birthday, Zayas won the vacant WBO belt with a unanimous decision victory over Mexican Jorge Garcia Perez at Madison Square Garden.

However, the level of competition increases in January when Baraou heads to Zayas’ backyard. The German scored the biggest victory of his career in August, defeating Yoenis Tellez in Orlando to win the WBA interim title. When then-champion Terence Crawford challenged Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight crown, the WBA stripped Crawford and elevated Baraou to full champion.

A jovial Zayas said he was looking forward to fighting at home.

“On January 11, we will fulfill another dream. This time I will fight on my island. I intend to unify two world titles in front of my people in the Coliseo de Puerto Rico. Together we will make history.”

Meanwhile, Baraou praised his opponent for accepting the challenge.

“Xander is a great talent and I fully credit him for accepting this fight. Not everyone would take such a risk, especially at this stage, but that’s what makes this fight special.

“I’m not coming just to show off. I’m coming to make a statement, walk away with another belt, and maybe even gain a few up-to-date Puerto Rican fans. When all is said and done, the world will know who truly is the top dog in the 154 division.”

The Brit was dropped twice by massive underdog Prenga in the opening round of their clash in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, but ‘AJ’ managed to recover and record a big knockdown of his own in the second round that resulted in the stoppage victory.

Tony Bellew Reviews Anthony Joshua's Comeback Victory Over Kristian Prenga After Knockdown Drama

Anthony Joshua may have earned a knockout win over Kristian Prenga but the fight certainly didn’t unfold as most people expected.

Joshua was facing the Albanian in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it looked like a massive upset could be on the cards when he was dropped twice in the opening round.

‘AJ’ was able to recover and went on to secure a second round knockout victory to prevent the shock lossseemingly paving the way for the battle against Tyson Fury later this year.

One man who was ringside to witness the battle was former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellewand he praised Joshua’s ability to turn things around in the fight after describing it as ‘chaos’.

“We predicted round two but I don’t think we foresaw that. That was chaos. He doesn’t see the uppercut coming and finds himself on the floor without knowing how he got there.

“The second one he did see it coming and he was able to clench down on the jaw. He got up and then the experience that he has he used tonight because he tied him up. Against Andy Ruiz he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t know how to do that, but tonight he did.

“He showed once again there is no quit. To be that hurt in the first round and get up, that’s the recoveries of power. People talk about your chin, but it’s not, it’s the level of fitness that gets you up from the floor.

“When Joshua gets a fighter hurt he’s the best finisher in the division. Whenever he hurts someone they’re gone. I haven’t seen him drop anybody and they survive, only Andy Ruiz. He’s a ruthless finisher.”

The clash between Joshua and Fury is now expected to be announced soon for later this year, after Fury won his own interim fight on Friday by defeating Mariusz Wach.
