“We’ll see him soon”: Unbeaten world champion sets sights on Naoya Inoue mega fight

What once seemed intended solely for the discussion of fantasy fights may become a reality with this one involving Naoya Inoue.

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez has enjoyed one of boxing’s most outstanding successes in recent years, starting with a breakthrough performance in just his 15th professional fight when he dazzled Mexican fighter and then-world champion Carlos Cuadras.

Victories over Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Juan Francisco Estrada, Shining Edwards, Phumelela Cafu and Fernando Martinez not only secured multiple world titles for Rodriguez, but also earned Rodriguez a place on pound-for-pound charts throughout the sport.

The 25-year-old San Antonio native is now considering his next move – not only in the ring, but also outside of it. As recently reported, Rodriguez is a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Matchroom.

Rodriguez, currently a three-division super flyweight world champion, could move up to bantamweight later this year, but his ambitions could go even further. His trainer Robert Garcia has already made it clear that a long-term goal is to fight undisputed super bantamweight champion Inoue.

After another successful defense of his undisputed crown on December 27, when he defeated David PicassoInoue was asked if he would be interested in fighting Rodriguez. Speaking through a translator, the Japanese star said:

“When he is ready and able to compete in the super-bantam class, and if the timing is perfect, I will be content to wait for him to challenge me.”

This prompted a short but eloquent answer from Coach Garcia.

“We’ll see him soon.”

Despite the significant weight difference, Rodriguez and his team seem willing to consider jumping from 115 pounds to 122 pounds to take on the powerful Inoue. Meanwhile, moving up to 118 pounds to challenge Naoya’s brother, Takuma Inoue, for the WBC bantamweight title could create an intriguing subplot that would only add further intrigue if Bam and Monster eventually meet.
