WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman on Friday unveiled a custom “King of the Nile” commemorative belt for the upcoming Oleksandr Usyk vs. Rico Verhoeven in Egypt. The belt will be awarded to the winner of the “Glory at Giza” event, which will take place on May 23 at the Pyramids of Giza.

The huge red centerpiece resembles a ruby-style ceremonial gem. If only there was a stone a true museum-grade ruby at this apparent size, the value of the belt can augment dramatically, causing sedate transportation, insurance and safety issues. A high-end natural stone could theoretically be worth more than the combined cost of producing the rest of the bar.

For a one-off WBC commemorative item associated with a Saudi-backed Pyramids event, a production cost of an amount of several thousand dollars wouldn’t be surprising.

Design inspired by the Egyptian style

The belt continues the WBC’s recent trend of creating location-inspired championship designs tied to major events, although this version may be one of the most detailed yet issued by the sanctioning body.

The center plate features a mighty Egyptian influence throughout the design, including the winged symbol of Horus extending across the top of the band with a huge red gem placed in the center. The gold background is covered with geometric patterns reminiscent of antique carvings, while the lower part contains symbols of flails and flails associated with Egyptian pharaohs and royal power.

The WBC’s classic ring of international flags remains around the outer border, combining the organization’s standard championship imagery with Egyptian-inspired graphics.

Sulaiman discovers the belt

Usyk enters the fight as the unified heavyweight champion and WBC titleholder, while Verhoeven moves from kickboxing into one of the most high-profile crossover fights boxing has attempted in recent years.

The event itself has already attracted attention for its location and spectacle-driven presentation, and the WBC’s latest commemorative belt seems to fit that theme. Instead of solely using a classic layout, the organization turned the bar into a visual centerpiece tied directly to the Egyptian setting and “King of the Nile” branding surrounding the fight.

Shawn Porter summarizes Conor Benn’s chances of defeating Ryan Garcia for the world title

Shawn Porter sums up Conor Benn’s chances of beating Ryan Garcia for world title

Former world champion Shawn Porter, who previously shared four rounds of sparring with Conor Benn, wondered how the Briton might fare against Ryan Garcia.

“The Destroyer” scored a comfortable 10-round points victory over Regis Prograis, who appeared on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs. Arslanbek Makhmudov last month.

In doing so, he stayed in the win column at the 150-pound catchweight division after gaining revenge on Chris Eubank Jr in a middleweight rematch last November.

As the top-ranked contender for the WBC welterweight title, Benn is set to drop back down to 147 pounds in pursuit of a fight with Ryan Garcia.

The American won the WBC world title in February dethroning Mario Barrios with a one-sided points victory after knocking down his fighter in the first round.

As a result, Garcia secured his first victory since an eighth-round stoppage of Oscar Duarte in 2023, followed by a no-contest against Devin Haney and a unanimous decision defeat against Rolando Romero.

Hoping for more stable form, the 27-year-old aims to defend his title later this year, possibly in the summer, with mandatory challenger Benn turning out to be his likely opponent.

Porter, however, said Benn is credited with his “versatility.” Boxing King’s Media that he felt Garcia’s speed had the potential to lead to a dramatic ending.

“Based on how Ryan Garcia looked in his last fight, it looks like he beat Conor Benn.

“This clash of styles favors Ryan Garcia because of his speed – because of his outside strength – so it will definitely be a tough fight for Conor Benn.

“I would say 60/40 [that] Ryan Garcia will probably win this fight [by] KO. But Conor is very tough. I already knew this about him, but I had to see it with my own eyes during sparring.

“It is much more versatile than that [what] we saw in the first fight with Eubank. He comes back in the rematch with Eubank and we see his versatility, speed, foot movement and things like that.

“That’s what I saw when I sparred him for four straightforward rounds.”

Despite, or perhaps partly because of, their related history of failed drug tests, the Garcia-Benn showdown is likely to attract significant attention.
