Vergil Ortiz is at a standstill as the Golden Boy case goes to trial
Vergil Ortiz Jr’s immediate future remains closed outside the ring, with his dispute with Golden Boy Promotions set to be resolved on July 14 in Las Vegas. While one of the most perilous junior middleweights in the sport awaits a move, other top names at 154 pounds are already leading the way.
Ortiz (24-0, 22 KO) and Golden Boy disagree with legal claims regarding their promotional relationship. BoxingScene reported on Monday that the case is on track to enter summer mediation and a broader resolution could be reached in September.
The undefeated Texas fighter has been linked in recent months to a high-profile fight with Jaron Ennis, who was involved in Ortiz’s stoppage victory over Erickson Lubin in November. Talks between the two sides later fell apart as relations between Ortiz and Golden Boy deteriorated.
Ennis has since moved on to challenge undefeated champion Xander Zayas on June 27 at the Barclays Center in Modern York, leaving Ortiz watching one of the biggest fights available in the division.
This is the true cost of these cases. A fighter can remain undefeated, stay in the rankings and still waste valuable time while business disputes drag on. Ortiz is 27 years venerable and still in great physical shape, but vigorous years in boxing don’t last long, especially in a heavy-duty division where challengers are constantly being replaced by the next available names.
Judge Cristina D. Silva reportedly sent the case to arbitration last month and also banned Ortiz from having contact with third parties until the case is resolved. The hearing is expected to last three days, followed by written closing submissions, before the ruling is sent back to the court.
Ortiz has already shown that he belongs at the top of the 154-pound division. Lubin’s knockout confirmed this opinion. The issue now is not whether he can fight at an elite level. The question is whether the business around him will continue to snail-paced down as the division moves on without him.

Devin Haney says Gervonta Davis’ team has made contact and declines to discuss the hydration clause
Devin Haney says that after years of calls for a fight, a fight with Gervonta Davis may finally be closer to reality.
Haney revealed on social media that Tank Davis’ team recently reached out about a potential fight. When the fan responded by warning him not to agree to any hydration restrictions, Haney quickly dismissed the idea.
“Never,” Haney repeated X about not wanting to agree to the rehydration clause.
The response came shortly after Haney suggested that discussions had begun between the two sides.
“I think Gervonta has gained some balls. His team has reached! We can just fight! 😅– Haney wrote.
The fight between Haney and Gervonta is one of the longest unanswered questions in boxing. Haney continued to fight multiple times during his lightweight title fight, but the fight never materialized despite years of public calls and fan demands.
San Francisco-born Haney became the undisputed lightweight champion in 2022, and Davis continued to build his profile as one of boxing’s biggest pay-per-view attractions.
Haney’s rejection of rehydration clauses will likely become a talking point if negotiations move forward. Hydration restrictions became a major topic of debate ahead of Tank’s 2023 fight with Ryan Garcia, with many fans criticizing the terms of the deal.
Devin has recently been linked to potential fights against Ryan Garcia, Shakur Stevenson and Keyshawn Davis. His latest comments put Gervonta Davis back into the conversation after years of failed attempts to make the fight happen.
