UFC legend Mark Hominick carrying coach Shawn Tompkins' legacy 15 years after tragedy

Former UFC featherweight title challenger Mark Hominick is educating the next Mixed Martial Arts generation using Shawn Tompkins' teachings.

UFC legend Mark Hominick's ascension in Mixed Martial Arts wouldn't've been possible without the influence of coach Shawn Tompkins.

After a four-fight professional fighting career, Tompkins turned his full-time attention towards teaching Hominick and several other pupils such as Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva. Tompkins is considered a Canadian MMA pioneer and one of the important influences in coaching.

Tompkins died of a heart attack at just 37 years old in August 2011. He was posthumously awarded the World MMA Awards Lifetime Achievement Award just months later.

Fast forward to 2026, and Hominick continues to coach several prominent up-and-comers using Tompkins' philosophies. After the fifteenth anniversary of Tompkins' passing, his legacy remains irreplicable.

Mark Hominick reflects on Shawn Tompkins ‘leaving his stamp' on MMA

In the latest episode of BetOnline's The Fight Guys podcast, Hominick touted Tompkins' lasting impact on the evolution of MMA.

“His charisma. Like to me, I started when I was about 16, and I had already been training Martial Arts and competing…his charisma and his bleached, blonde hair, California sun-looking guy and you were drawn to him,†Hominick said of Tompkins.

“When you were in a room with him, you felt special. Especially as a kid, there's someone you could look up to. I remember after my first weekend training with him I went home, bleached my hair blonde, came in with the Peroxide look like Shawn [LAUGHS]. He had that effect on people, no matter where it was…he opened up doors for us because promoters, fans, and everybody else was just drawn to him with his charisma that he had…

“There were a lot of good and bad ways that we've been remembered, but we always had fun doing it,†Hominick continued. “Left our stamp wherever we went…you met him once, and you knew him for the rest of your life.â€

Demetrious Johnson spots his lesson in Arman Tsarukyan's UFC 331 KO
Demetrious
Johnson claims Arman
Tsarukyan put a lesson from their training session together to
good use in his recent bout.

Tsarukyan further bolstered his case for a title shot in the

Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC
331, knocking out Mauricio
Ruffy with an elbow at 4:56 of the opening round. The technique
he used to deliver the knockout was among the positions he worked
on alongside Johnson when they trained together.

Arman Tsarukyan put Demetrious Johnson’s clinch advice to use
against Mauricio Ruffy

Johnson broke down the finish and highlighted Tsarukyan's decision
to remain aggressive in close range rather than immediately looking
for another takedown when he had Ruffy up against the Octagon
wall.

“Now, instead of just wrestling here, like I said, you don't have
to wrestle here,†Johnson said in a video posted to his YouTube
channel. “Look, he's already here. That's one of the things I
showed him. Usually people want to wrestle here, but I told him,
‘You don't have to wrestle.'â€

The UFC Hall of Famer also backed Tsarukyan for a title shot
against lightweight champ Justin
Gaethje.

“Those are things that he's going to need when he takes on Justin
Gaethje, because Justin can push the pace,†Johnson said. “He can
do a lot of damage. He can wrestle, too. This is the fight that
needs to happen. We don't need to worry about Ilia
Topuria. This man is owed a title shot.â€

Magomed Ankalaev tells Paulo Costa: ‘I’m your get-out-of-jail-free card’

Magomed Ankalaev tells Paulo Costa: ‘I’m your get-out-of-jail-free card’
Magomed
Ankalaev is willing to fight Paulo Costa
despite considering it a lose-lose scenario.

Costa is currently amidst a falling-out with the
Ultimate Fighting Championship over the last fight on his
current contract. The Brazilian has repeatedly called out the
promotion online while campaigning for a fight. Former champ
Magomed
Ankalaev has now offered a solution.

Ankalaev offers to serve as Costa's final fight under his
current UFC contract

Costa's latest gripe with the UFC involved being offered a
short-notice five-round fight for no additional pay. While Costa is
willing to accept a five-round fight, he wants to be compensated
accordingly and have ample time to prepare for a 25-minute bout.
Furthermore, he's taken shots at UFC exec Hunter Campbell and asked
for his release multiple times.

Ankalaev has offered to be the last fight on Costa's current
contract. The former light heavyweight champ believes Costa has
nothing to lose, as his stock will skyrocket with a win as he
enters free agency. Ankalaev believes he doesn't have much to gain
from the matchup, as he'll likely be the favorite, but is still
open to fighting “Borrachinha.â€

“You beat me, you become a free agent and make millions,†Ankalaev
wrote on X. “I beat you, everybody expected me to beat you anyway.
You have nothing to lose. I'm your get-out-of-jail-free card. Let's
fight.â€

Costa is coming off back-to-back finishes, while Ankalaev returned
to winning ways against Bogdan
Guskov after losing the title in his rematch with Alex
Pereira.

Valter Walker admits foot problem has him doubting UFC title hopes

Valter Walker admits foot problem has him doubting UFC title hopes
Valter
Walker believes his compromised feet might be a hurdle on his
way to an
Ultimate Fighting Championship title.

While Walker is a feared leg lock submission artist, he isn't an
elite striker. “The Foot Hunter†recently admitted that his
striking isn't up to the mark due to bad footwork caused by his
compromised feet. Walker revealed that his footwork is poor as his
toes are curled, limiting his ability to be light on his feet.

Valter Walker says childhood shoe problems left him with curled
toes and poor footwork

Coming from a poor background, Walker didn't have money to buy new
shoes as his feet grew. Wearing undersized shoes did long-term
damage to his toes, which is now showing its effects. He claims
that this issue is the biggest stumbling block towards him becoming
a champion.

“I really have a big problem with my footwork,†Walker told Full
Mount MMA. “My foot is not really good because when I was young, I
didn't have money to buy new shoes. All the time my foot grew and
the shoes were smaller than my feet. My toes are a little bit
[curled]. And because of this, I have a little bit of a footwork
problem. And I don't really know how I can be a champion.â€

While Walker (16-1) isn't in the UFC heavyweight title picture yet,
he has quickly ascended the ranks. The 28-year-old has scored five
consecutive submission wins since suffering his lone professional
loss in his UFC debut in 2024.
