UFC legend announces retirement from professional wrestling

Brock Lesnar is finally walking away from professional wrestling and the world of combat sports altogether.

On Tuesday, the former UFC heavyweight champion and longtime WWE star announced on The Pat McAfee Show that he is officially retiring from professional wrestling, a business the 49-year-old Lesnar has been involved with since 2000. Lesnar appeared at the WWE's SummerSlam event this past Saturday, where he lost to Oba Femi, putting an end to their storyline feud, which began earlier this year and included a match at WrestleMania 42 this past April that Femi was also booked to win.

As it stands, their SummerSlam encounter will go down as Lesnar's final match.

“I'm here today to do this interview to let the world and everybody know that I am retired and I wanted to say a big thank you to everybody,†Lesnar told McAfee. “Saturday was a very emotional day for me. It's kind of weird because—When Oba Femi slammed me at WrestleMania, I was like, I can't do this again. I was like, ‘I think I'm done.' But the business and I still have fuel in the tank but Saturday for Brock Lesnar, that's it. That's it for me in the squared circle and for everything else, too.

“I just want to give a shout-out to everybody on this universe that has followed me since I was a little kid all the way until Saturday. I was just a farm kid from South Dakota with a big dream and a big heart and a big-ass chip on my shoulder and I'm just grateful. Grateful to be 49 years old and to have to be able to do what I did in this lifetime, I thank God and everybody that supported me.â€

Lesnar was widely regarded as one of the most promising professional wrestling prospects of all time, having signed with WWE (then the WWF) directly out of college after winning an NCAA Division-I heavyweight title in 2000, his senior year at the University of Minnesota. He quickly rose through the ranks, making his main roster debut in 2002 and went on to become the promotion's youngest ever world champion at 25 when he was booked to go over future Hollywood film star Dwayne “The Rock†Johnson at the 2002 edition of SummerSlam.

However, in 2004, Lesnar requested to leave the WWE due to burnout from the intense work schedule, among other factors. He was granted his release and briefly pursued an NFL career (despite having zero collegiate football experience) before turning his attention to MMA. Lesnar defeated Kim Min-soo in his MMA debut in 2007, but lost in his UFC debut to Frank Mir. He rebounded with a win over Heath Herring and went on to capture the UFC heavyweight title by knockout out Randy Couture in just his fourth pro bout.

During his brief time with the UFC, Lesnar established himself as one of the biggest box office draws in MMA history, regularly surpassing the 1,000,000 pay-per-view buy mark whenever he was featured.

Lesnar successfully defended his UFC title twice before losing it to Cain Velasquez and later returned to the WWE in 2012. Four years later, he made what would be his final UFC appearance, defeating Mark Hunt at UFC 200 in a bout that would later be overturned to a no-contest when Lesnar later tested positive for banned substances. Hunt sued Lesnar and the UFC over the result, leading to a years-long litigation battle.

Since that 2016 fight, Lesnar continued to make headlining appearances for WWE, though he was briefly taken off-screen when he was named as part of a lawsuit directed at longtime WWE boss Vince McMahon, who was accused of sexual abuse, trafficking and exploitation by former employee Janel Grant. Regardless, Lesnar returned to in-ring activity in 2025 and continued to perform.

The famously reclusive Lesnar now hopes to step out of the spotlight for good and focus on his family, with his children pursuing their own athletic dreams, including his daughter Mya, a national shotput champion at Colorado State University.

“I've got some hunting lined up and I've got two boys in hockey, I'm going to support that, their dreams as long as that's feasible,†Lesnar said. “My daughter, she's got her eye on the 2028 Olympics. Just going to spend more time with the kids in the woods and just reap what I've sewn. Just enjoy life.â€

Alexander Volkanovski explains why he’s a ‘nightmare matchup’ for Movsar Evloev
Alexander
Volkanovski is confident he'll become the first fighter to
defeat Movsar
Evloev.

Volkanovski (28-4) will defend his
Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight title against
Evloev (20-0) at
UFC 333 on Oct. 24 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The champion
believes he presents a “nightmare†stylistic matchup for the
unbeaten Russian.

Alexander Volkanovski explains why Movsar Evloev’s grappling
may fail him in UFC 333 title fight

Ahead of their title clash, Volkanovski explained that Evloev
relies on his wrestling to escape difficult situations. The
Australian champion believes his own grappling skills will deny the
challenger that fallback option.

“I think it just doesn't end well for him,†Volkanovski said in a
pre-fight interview. “I don't mean it in any bad way. I just think
I'm the guy to take that zero from him. He's got incredible skill.
He is very effective with what he does… Every time he's had
problems, he could rely on that wrestling and grappling to get him
out of trouble. And you’ve got to respect that skill. But that
doesn't work with me. That's not a get out of jail free card with
me. When you're panicking, when you're freaking out, you don't get
to just grab hold of me and hang on to a leg or anything like that…
I just think that I'm a bit of a nightmare matchup for him.â€

Volkanovski has demonstrated his defensive wrestling in previous
appearances, including his competitive first bout against Islam
Makhachev, who tops the UFC's men's pound-for-pound rankings.
He has never been submitted in 32 professional fights.

Alexander Volkanovski stops Movsar Evloev with barrage of shots to defend title in UFC 333 main event

Alexander Volkanovski is still the greatest after his latest title defense as he ended Movsar Evloev's undefeated run with a second-round stoppage in the UFC 333 main event.

As usual, Volkanovski showed off tremendous takedown defense and immaculate striking as he picked Evloev apart on the feet. Finally in the second round, Volkanovski put together a combination of punches that put Evloev down and the Australian finished with a barrage of shots on the ground.

The end came at 4:54 in the second round.

“He's a great figher,†Volkanovski said after his latest title defefnse. “He was undefeated for a reason but I just said I'm the right guy for that job. I knew the ref would have to stop it when he covered up like that.

“I'm choosing to do this. I said if I didn't take too much damage, we probably keep going so maybe we keep going. I feel the love and it's paid off now. The love around the world is incredible.â€

After tasting defeat for the first time, Evloev was understandably upset but he paid homage to Volkanovski on a job well done.

“It was a terrible fight,†Evloev said. “He's a good one. Older, stronger, better, he's truly a legend. I'm grateful for this opportunity to be here. Alex, great champion, I'm happy to be here to share the cage with him.â€

Volkanovski started fast with a series of inside leg kicks and then peppering Evloev with a series of stiff jabs. Evloev then exploded forward with a takedown but Volkanovski bounced back up almost immediately.

Volkanovski continued with his forward pressure before countering another takedown as kept working on the feet. Evloev was undeterred though, as he kept battling to drag the champion to the ground.

Evloev grabbed onto the body lock to open round two and literally dragged Volkanovski to the canvas but the champion reversed positions to land on top. From there, Volkanovski laned some ground and pound before Evloev escaped back to his feet.

Volkanovski then uncorked a well-timed overhand right that seemingly wobbled Evloev momentarily.

Late in the round, Volkanovski connected with a nasty combination of punches that had Evloev turning away to avoid the damage as a cut opened up on the head.

Evloev eventually faded as he fell to the ground following a blistering left hand from Volkanovski and the champion took full advantage of the opening. With Evloev hurt, Volkanovski just unleashed a barrage of shots to finish the fight.

That makes three straight wins for Volkanovski in championship fights and his seond straight title defense since reclaiming the featherweight belt. He obviously indicated that he plans to continue fighting and it's soon going to be difficult not to declare Volkanovski as the greatest featherweight of all-time, if he hasn't already taken that crown.
