UFC Edmonton's Julien Leblanc is emboldened by underdog role as he taps into killer mindset

Julien Leblanc battles Gilbert Urbina on October 17th at UFC Edmonton on MMA Canada. With a second child born in mid-June, Leblanc is additionally emboldened to compete on Canadian soil once again. While his Winnipeg-based UFC debut did not pan out, there remains the placement on a stacked card in the great fight north. Touching on those pieces of this sophomore octagon walk, Leblanc said [via MMA Canada],

“Yeah, we're a bunch of great Canadian on that cards and and I feel like it's a blessing. Like regardless where the fight is, it's a blessing to fight in the UFC. That's what I've worked all my life. My debut was s**t. So, unfortunately, didn't go as planned. Hats off to Robert, he blew my knee out with that first leg kick. Yeah, man. He I saw also like the the speed of the UFC, the the level. I always knew like the level, but you you you always think you know it until you really in that cage, right? When it's time for real.â€

“Sparring is sparring. But fighting for real is completely different. So, no, I'm grateful that I had the chance to experience it, regardless that it didn't go my way. Once again I'm blessed that I'm able to fight in the UFC and, people count me out all my life. So, it's nothing different here. I think I'll be once again the underdog, probably a bigger underdog because of that really bad UFC debut. So, it's been like this all my life, man. Once again, I don't look at that. I just look at where I am today.â€

“I'm really, really happy of like from where I've come and where I've ended up in the biggest promotion in the world. So, every fight that I'll get to fight in the UFC it will be a blessing and that's it. I'm really, really happy and grateful that I have the chance to fight for them.â€

UFC Edmonton

While his UFC debut effort against Robert Valentin disappointed him, there are ample lessons to be taken for this second trek with the promotion, as Leblanc stated [via MMA Canada],

“So we're in fighting, right? So, I know every guy will try to kill you, but now we're fighting for big money. We're fighting for big bonuses. In the regional scene some guys they're fighting not a lot. I don't know like the motivation is different for some guys. For sure everyone tries to to kill each other but I just feel like it's more to do it for the sport when you're on the regional scene. But when you're in the UFC it's like they will kill you if they can you know what I mean?â€

“So, like I said we're fighting for big bonuses big money everyone wants to make that money everyone needs it it's it's her career. We do this for a living. So, I just like I knew it from the the get-go, but I mean like you won't make no friends in the UFC. I've always been like a nice kind guy, but it's time I turn into a killer and you know, a little bit of like f**k you all. Sorry for my language, but just like got to be selfish and got to be the killer from right the first second of the fight.â€

“Because that's how they think and that's how they fight, those guys. So I think it's just; yeah, man, I just saw saw that like in my first fight that yeah you know like Robert wanted to kill me and he he took advantage like he saw it like he saw my face in the on that first kick and once again like it looked like I was like scared or I don't know like because some people after were like ‘oh, man you looked scared' like get your knee blown out with a leg kick and you never think that will happen.â€

“Once again it's no excuse it's no excuse. Like a lot of guys they they fight through like look Carlos Fullberg like blew his knee and still knocked out Jiri, right? But it's like that killer instinct went away for a second when that kick hit and that knee like because I really; it was the first time I was feeling something like that, you know? It's hard to explain, but once again, it's no excuse. Trust me. Like I've never went public about that after a fight or like having excuse.â€

“No, I'm not like this. I'm just saying that the moment I hesitated in my head, it's the moment Robert really like came at me. Like I remember his face and he saw it. When you look at the video, he saw it. He kicked back. He kicked back and then took me down. But even on the take down, I looked like I had zero takedown defense. Like I really like choked mentally on that moment and I was not able to recover from it.â€

“Robert was really fast and he finished me. So that's it, man. That's what I saw. So, it's regardless what happens in that fight, man, you got to be in that killer instinct mode all the time. Like if you're injured, if you're not injured, like if he's injured, you just got to never let that killer instinct go. You got to be able to to go out on your shield. Like you got to think that you're on the the the I don't know.â€

“Sorry, my [English] is not good, but like on the the World War II when they they went to Normandy and they to fight the Germans, like those guys, man. It's like, bro, you get your arm cut off or your leg or whatever. You keep on fighting, it's for your life. So, it's really you're fighting for your life in that cage and that's it. That's the approach I need to have my my next fights.â€

With MMA being such a momentum-driven sport whereby you can vault your career to unforeseen heights off the backing of even a singular spectacular win, Leblanc quipped [via MMA Canada],

“Oh 100%. You just said it like everything changes so fast, everything changes so fast in that game. You have one win, like look, man, I lost so many sponsors because of that performance. People that were with me since three years, now they don't even text. Like when they saw my next fight announced, they didn't even text me or nothing. They used to sponsor me every fight and they wanted to be there. When I got signed they did a big, big press conference.â€

“Like the real ones are still there but I mean like this is the game we're in but then I'm going to win my next fight and they're all going to be back. But I'm not saying this to hate on them. It's just like I already knew that it was like this in the sport. Just to say that everything can change so fast. Like you think you end the year on a bad note, then you win, you get the bonus or boom and then you're on on cloud nine again. So it's like it's really a roller coaster of a sport.â€

“But that what's makes makes it so cool and so thrilling at the same time.  Like I just know that it's never over until it's over. So the same thing in a fight, right? You can get injured or whatever. I could have react better and try to, I don't know. I could have react better and maybe do a better fight. Unfortunately, didn't happen. Now we turn the page and we move forward. That's it. That's all. You know what I mean?â€

Touching on how some might perceive him as an even bigger underdog this time out considering the caliber of his opponent, Leblanc said [via MMA Canada],

“Oh, for sure. I mean I respect Gilbert. He's a dog. He goes out there to fight. He's not scared at all. So he's another guy that will come at me right from the bat and he's going to try to kill me. So I'm going to try to kill him, too. I think it's going to be a good match up. We're both very good strikers, long strikers. He just had an amazing performance against Vasco [sp??] and his last fight, his debut at middleweight. You can see he's bigger.â€

“He looks stronger, too. It looks like he's more at his weight class than at '70. So, no, I'm looking forward for it. I know I'm going to have a very good and tough opponent. At the end of the day, all those guys in the UFC, man, it's the highest level. They're all well-rounded. They all know how to grapple. They all know how to strike. So, it's going to be a fun one for sure.â€

Delving into if Urbina was someone who has been on his radar for a long time now, Leblanc stated [via MMA Canada],

“Oh yeah, for sure. I've been studying him and I was actually offered the [Vlasto] Cepo fight before him. But I had to have surgery. Like it was not a big surgery but a minor surgery to my knee after the last fight. So thank God like it was not a big one. They managed to save like a lot of the knee. So, thank God I got a good team. Thanks to the UFC too, that took care of it right away. But yeah, so I was offered Cepo fight.â€

“Unfortunately, they had to say no because I was getting surgery. But yeah, I looked the fight. I didn't know I was going to fight Gilbert after, but I looked the fight and I was rooting for him, being a massive underdog. I was rooting for Gilbert. So man, once again, hats off to him. I don't know. He got the bonus, too. So, I'm sure it's good for his family. Yeah, man. But now it's my turn. It's my time and that's it.â€

Video: Wang Cong taunts Natalia Silva at final face-off before UFC 332

Natalia Silva and Wang Cong seem ready to fight.

On Saturday, Silva and Wang square off for the vacant women's flyweight title in the main event of UFC 332 in Salt Lake City, but on Friday, the two nearly got to things early during the ceremonial weigh-ins after Wang taunted Silva during their final faceoff.

After hitting the scale for the Salt Lake City crowd, Silva hopped down and went to faceoff with Wang, who was wearing the Joker makeup that's become a calling card. Wang had her arms up in a fighting pose and approached Silva while popping her hips repeatedly, getting right in Silva's face and leading Silva to shove her arms away, causing security to intervene. Silva seemed annoyed by the whole interaction, while Wang continued to taunt her with hip pops.

Silva and Wang were not the only fighters who had to be separated at the ceremonial weigh-ins. The co-main event bout between Deiveson Figueiredo and Payton Talbott also nearly got physical, with Talbott encroaching on Figueiredo, causing the former flyweight champion to push him back, before UFC CEO Dana White got in the middle.

Watch the full ceremonial weigh-ins above.

UFC 332 takes place at Delta Center in Salt Lake City tomorrow night, with the early prelims starting at 4:00 p.m. EDT on Paramount+, and the main card starting at 8:00 p.m. ET on CBS.

Joe Rogan suggests Gable Steveson's partnership with Jon Jones contributed to UFC 331 loss

Joe Rogan suggests Gable Steveson's partnership with Jon Jones contributed to UFC 331 loss

UFC analyst Joe Rogan believes Gable Steveson's decision to train with Jon Jones negatively impacted his performance at UFC 331.

Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson suffered a shocking knockout loss to Sean Sharaf at UFC 331 last month. Steveson, considered by many as one of the top prospects in MMA, suffered the first loss of his fighting career after a successful UFC debut.

In the lead-up to UFC 331, Steveson partnered up with UFC legend Jon Jones to learn from one of the greatest to ever compete in the Octagon. Before his UFC debut, Jones crowned Steveson an eventual UFC heavyweight champion, a goal now in jeopardy following UFC 331.

While Joe Rogan believes Jones is the greatest UFC fighter of all time, he thinks the former two-division champion put an unwarranted spotlight on his protege.

Joe Rogan becomes the latest to question Gable Steveson-Jon Jones partnership

During a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan shared an interesting take on Steveson's collaboration with Jones.

“You can't pretend to be the guy you're hanging out with,†Rogan said of Steveson and Jones.

“That's the problem: You're hanging out with a guy who's the GOAT, and you start thinking you're the next guy. You might be. You could be – if you do the right things. But if you believe it before it happens … you have to be cautious, but also confident. There's this dance of the mind. There's so much going on to be an elite fighter.

“You have to be aware,†Rogan continued on Steveson and Jones. “Look at Kamaru Usman. Beating Leon Edwards for four rounds, all of a sudden one head kick – boom, lost the title. Never the same guy – because you're human. As tough as Kamaru is, he's a f—— human being. It's a wild dance of possibilities, but it's also one of the reasons why people love the sport so much. What you did elevated the whole sport.†(h/t MMA Junkie)

Renato Moicano explains why he should be Ilia Topuria’s next opponent: ‘He needs an easy fight’

Renato Moicano explains why he should be Ilia Topuria’s next opponent: ‘He needs an easy fight’

Ilia Topuria has yet to book a fight in the UFC after the beating imposed by Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC White House this past June, and longtime veteran Renato Moicano argues he's the ideal opponent for the former two-division champion when he's ready to re-enter the cage.

Moicano, who faces off with Tom Nolan in the main event of UFC Vegas 123 after Moicano was pulled from the UFC 331 with his original opponent Brian Ortega out due to a cut, said he has a few names in mind for a post-fight callout in case of a victory. The biggest name possible would be Topuria, who had a perfect 17-0 career in MMA prior to the Gaethje knockout.

“Ilia Topuria. That's a name,†Moicano told MMA Fighting. “He needs an easy fight, right? That's the truth. We know how the UFC operates. Either they sacrifice him and Paddy Pimblett [against each other], or they'll give him a fight to keep rolling, so the guy can get his confidence back. And I think his confidence is broken. And look at how life works, man. Six months ago, I was saying this guy could possibly be one of the greatest of all time, but you're only as good as your last fight. And he can come back. He can come back, knock out the next guy, and get back on track.â€

Topuria won his first nine bouts in the UFC before the Gaethje clash, finishing seven opponents including Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira and Alexander Volkanovski, and Moicano would expect him to be more dangerous now after enduring such “humiliation†on the White House lawn.

“And it would be a fucking tough fight because I think this guy is pissed off, right?†Moicano said. “He must be training like an animal. But that's life, right? That's life. I think that fight would make sense. I don't know if the UFC will make it happen. I don't even know if that's the fight I'll ask for. Guilherme, like I'm telling you, do I prepare my speech? No, man. You can already see that I have all of this in my head. I get there, I win, I look somewhere, and it feels like God is telling me, ‘Say this for me.' Obviously, that's not literally what I'm telling you, but I feel in my heart what I'm supposed to say right there, and it's been working since 2022. I just say what's in my heart.â€

“He seems like an intelligent guy who will learn from his mistake. What was his mistake? He thought he could knock out a guy who's difficult to knock out [laughs]. He thought he could knock him out at any moment. And it's one thing to say that, it's another thing to step into the cage and act as if it's true. Man, it's very difficult to do that against Justin Gaethje. He almost knocked him out, but then he took so much damage, got beaten up so badly, that he was destroyed. It was a total humiliation, that's the truth. One of the biggest upsets, a humiliation, losing on the biggest spectacle the UFC has ever had, inside the White House. It created a legend, right? Justin Gaethje became a legend after that night, and it was because of his arrogance. It's that old story: he's going to have to put on the humility shoes, stay nice and quiet, and that makes the guy even more dangerous.â€

The UFC lightweight division has seen a recent influx of new blood as of late, with the devastating debut of Salahdine Parnasse, and could get even deeper with the potential signing of undefeated PFL champion Usman Nurmagomedov. Moicano said he's willing to be the “easy†pray for Topuria, but that wouldn't apply to those other two.

“[UFC] could [offer me]. The difficult part will be getting me to accept it,†Moicano said. “It will be hard to make me accept it. I've been a fool many times in this life. I've been a fool. But the only thing about me that's a fool is my face. The UFC can [offer me]. But like I told you, this is a message I'm going to leave for whoever is reading this article: the market determines your value. You shouldn't measure yourself through other people's eyes. You should know who you are and what your value is. From the moment the UFC doesn't want me anymore, the cycle is over, and that's fine. And you'll never see me talking badly about the UFC. Never. A lot of people even call me the UFC's puppet because I didn't want to accept money that I believe is illegitimate. I signed the contract. That has nothing to do with the UFC; that has to do with my principles.

“Brother, everything I have — today I have a YouTube channel that's going to hit 400,000 people. I'm saying this because I'm fucking good. Moicano is fucking good. Why am I telling you this? It's one thing to get lucky once, it's another thing to get lucky twice, three times, four times. I built a complete career, I got to fight for a championship. You can try to take away the credit for the luck I had or not, God put me there, I fought for a title, and today I have a huge channel. And just like I have a big YouTube channel, just like I'm a UFC athlete, I'm going to use everything I've learned to grow outside the UFC. This isn't the end. This is the beginning.

“So if the UFC wants to force me to take a fight with Nurmagomedov, they'd better give me a lot of money. Otherwise, I'm fine with it. You can talk crap at me. The UFC can be sure of one thing: I'll never talk badly about them. Because if today I have a house, if today I have a family, if today I have assets, if today I have a channel with almost 400,000 people, it's because of the UFC. You can never be ungrateful. You can never spit in the plate you ate from.â€

It all depends on his performance at UFC Vegas 123, though, and Moicano said he understands being put in such position where he would be expected to lose to a younger athlete with years ahead of him in the sport.

“And the UFC didn't just give me a job. No, it gave me a life, it gave me authority, it gave me a purpose,†Moicano said. “Everything that happened in the UFC, I accepted. But now it's time for me to choose a little more, you know? I know the UFC is a company, and they're going to try to do what's best for them. And now that I have an event myself, I completely understand them. You can't take a 37-, 38-year-old guy and expect to build his career. He doesn't have any more time. So what do you have to do? Take the younger guys. But maybe Moicano isn't willing to play that role. We'll see.â€
