UFC 329 results: Mario Bautista badly damages Cory Sandhagen’s leg, gets his revenge with unanimous decision win

Mario Bautista had to wait seven years but he finally got his revenge with a win over Cory Sandhagen at UFC 329 on Saturday.

After making his debut on seven days' notice and falling to Sandhagen back in 2019, Bautista showed how much he's improved in every facet of his game. He scored a knockdown on Sandhagen and nearly took of his opponent's leg after Royval nearly snatched a Suloev stretch followed by a kneebar attempt.

When it was over, Bautista got the nod with all three judges scoring the fight 29-28 in his favor.

“I lost my debut against him,†Bautista said after the win. “I knew I could beat him, I just had to be prepared. It was just crazy how it turned about. Manifestation. I was trying to rip everything off. At the end of the round, I saw him walking to his corner limping. I'll always finish strong.

“I think it says a lot about myself. I think I deserve that next shot at the title.â€

Bautista scored with a couple of body kicks to open the fight but Sandhagen was quick to counter with a stiff punch that rattled the veteran bantamweight. That led to Bautista looking for a takedown as Sandhagen resisted with both fighters jockeying for position against the cage.

Bautista eventually separated and unleashed a barrage of punches with several shots getting through Sandhagen's defense. He also connected with a well-timed left hook with Sandhagen firing back with a long jab of his own.

Another devastating series of shots from Bautista had Sandhagen backing up before a late takedown nearly led to a Suloev stretch. While Sandhagen eventually broke free, Bautista definitely had his leg in serious trouble as the round came to an end.

After the round, Sandhagen limped to his corner and he was still favoring his leg on the restart. Bautista took advantage kicking away at Sandhagen's leg and moving side to side to make his opponent move with him.

To his credit, Sandhagen was still finding a home for some of his strikes and he wasn't backing down. He even managed to open a small cut on the side of Bautista's head. Sandhagen was doing just enough to stay ahead with Bautista's output slowing down.

As the final round got started, Bautista blasted Sandhagen with a huge left hook that put the former title challenger down on the canvas. Bautista jumped down, looking for the finish but Sandhagen was quick to grab a leg to at least slow him down.

Back on the feet, Bautista was still gunning for the knockout before landing another takedown and trying to take Sandhagen's back. Sandhagen broke free and he started marching forward because the round was definitely slipping away from him after the knockdown.

Bautista continued to outgrapple Sandhagen, scoring multiple takedowns and controlling the action on the ground. But Sandhagen eventually battled back and looked for a takedown of his own as he put Bautista on the ground for a split second.

Unfortunately it was too little, too late as the damage mounted by Bautista won him the round and ultimately the fight as he picks up arguably the biggest win of his career.

With a two fight win streak, Bautista puts himself in position for a massive fight when he competes next as he anxiously awaits bantamweight champion Petr Yan to make his return sometime later this year.

Paddy Pimblett says Justin Gaethje’s upset changed his UFC 329 mindset

at UFC 329. | 📷: Getty/UFC

Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight Paddy
Pimblett believes there would've been no point in continuing
his fighting career had he lost to Benoit St.
Denis.

Pimblett (24-4) took on St. Denis (17-4) in a lightweight matchup
in the co-main event of
UFC 329 on Saturday in Las Vegas. “The Baddy†had repeatedly
predicted that his French counterpart would rush for a takedown and
get choked out. It played out just as the Brit foresaw, as he
secured a quick submission in the first round to return to winning
ways.

Paddy Pimblett explains why UFC 329 loss to Benoit St. Denis
could have ended his career

Pimblett subsequently revealed that weeks before the fight, he was
wondering whether he should retire if he couldn't beat St. Denis.
He has always voiced his UFC championship aspirations and believed
his title dreams would've never materialized if he hadn't gotten
past St. Denis.

“About four weeks ago, five weeks ago, I was like, ‘If I don’t win
this fight, what’s the point in fighting anymore? I might as well
retire. If I can’t beat BSD, then what’s the point in fighting?' If
I can’t beat BSD, I’m never going to be a world champion,†Pimblett
said on the UFC's ”About Last Fight” podcast. “And that’s what I
do this for. I do this to be the best in the world. So, if I can’t
beat him, what?â€

Paddy Pimblett was inspired by Justin Gaethje's win at UFC
Freedom 250

However, the Liverpudlian found a new wave of motivation when
Justin
Gaethje defeated Ilia
Topuria in a massive upset to win the undisputed lightweight
title at
UFC Freedom 250. Coming off a hard-fought loss to Gaethje,
Pimblett felt invincible during the last two weeks of his fight
camp for UFC 329.

“And then two days later, Justin Gaethje beats Ilia Topuria. And it
was one of the biggest kicks up the ass I’ve ever had in me life,â€
Pimblett added. “Set a fire underneath me and just the last couple
of weeks of this training camp have been unbelievable. And I’m
ready to kill anyone. Put anyone in front of me and I’ll kill them.
Like, I literally could have killed Benoit St. Denis then. I had to
say to Marc, ‘Lad, he’s out. He’s unconscious.'â€

Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight Carlos
Prates claims he would be a tough matchup for Conor
McGregor.

McGregor (22-7) returned to action after five years in a
welterweight matchup against Max
Holloway (28-9) at
UFC 329 on Saturday in Las Vegas. The Irishman's highly
anticipated return ended in 69 seconds after he injured his right
knee on the first kick he threw. While there were rumblings of
McGregor vs. Prates before the Holloway rematch was confirmed, the
Brazilian believes it wouldn't have worked out for the former
two-division champ.

Carlos Prates has a warning for Conor McGregor: ‘I would hurt
you'

Reacting to UFC 329's headliner, Prates says he would significantly
damage the UFC legend if they were to fight. “The Nightmareâ€
advises McGregor to never accept a booking against him. Prates also
believes that McGregor has already cemented his legacy and should
make way for the new generation now. He further took a dig at the
Irish star's mohawk, which he donned for his latest outing.

“If I fight against u, I would hurt you bad bro,†Prates wrote on
his Instagram stories. “[It's] alright don't accept the fight
against me Mc chicken. And have your legacy already, now it's time
for the new generation. And never cut your hair like this
again.â€

Prates (24-7) has finished all seven of his UFC wins so far, while
only dropping a decision against Ian Garry,
who challenges Islam
Makhachev for the title at UFC
330. There were initially rumors of McGregor returning to
action against Prates. “Notorious†even claimed that the UFC had
offered him the Brazilian 170-pounder, but the matchup ultimately
fell through in favor of the Holloway rematch.

Arman Tsarukyan criticizes Merab Dvalishvili for hitting Umar Nurmagomedov’s friend

Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight Arman
Tsarukyan has accused Merab
Dvalishvili of delivering a sucker-punch to a man he says is

Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight contender Umar
Nurmagomedov's friend.

Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight Arman
Tsarukyan believes it was wrong of Merab
Dvalishvili to strike a man he says is Umar
Nurmagomedov's friend.

Dvalishvili recently got into a scuffle ahead of his wrestling win
over Henry
Cejudo at RAF Georgia. He was asked about a potential wrestling
match against Nurmagomedov during the pre-fight press conference.
“The Machine†dismissed the idea, calling the Dagestani
“spoiled.â€

A friend of Nurmagomedov was a part of the contingent of
Abdulrashid Sadulaev, who lost to Kyle Snyder at RAF Georgia.
Nurmagomedov's friend allegedly confronted Dvalishvili about his
comments after the pre-fight presser. The former bantamweight
champion then struck him, leading to an all-out brawl.

Tsarukyan didn't like Dvalishvili's actions. He revealed that
Nurmagomedov's friend was only asking Dvalishvili not to be
disrespectful towards the Dagestani star. “Ahalkalakets†claims
Dvalishvili launched the sucker punch while they were still
talking.

Arman Tsarukyan slams Merab Dvalishvili, details what happened
in the aftermath

Tsarukyan believes Dvalishvili could have settled the incident by
having a conversation instead of throwing hands. The UFC
lightweight also revealed that Dvalishvili subsequently squashed
his beef with the Dagestani squad.

“The scuffle began after Merab sucker-punched the guy, who was
actually trying to say, ‘Don't talk bad about our brother while we
are here.' And Merab punched him while he was talking,†Tsarukyan
told Red Corner MMA. “From my point of view, it was wrong. They
just needed to talk and settle things down. Then, when they got
locked in that room, they started fighting one-on-one. They
squashed it and shook hands.â€

Nurmagomedov (20-1) also slammed Dvalishvili (21-5) for hitting his
friend. Nurmagomedov also questions whether Dvalishvili would have
reacted the same way if there had been no crowd to break the
fight.

“On the Caucasus, a man is defined by honor, dignity, and
hospitality,†Nurmagomedov wrote on X. “My friend only asked why
you were talking behind someone's back. I don't need to insult you
to feel like a man. Who you really are is shown when there's no
crowd and no one to step in.â€
