Tyson Fury: “This year I will return to the top of heavyweight boxing”

Give Tyson Fury this: he never lacks confidence. The man has been out of the ring for over a year, but now that he’s announced another comeback, he’s as brash as a teenage up-and-coming fighter. He is thirty-seven years elderly, but listening to him in the recording posted on social media on Saturday, you might as well think he is younger than twenty-five. “I have no doubt,” he said, “I can reach the top again.” Oleksandr Usyk, who currently sits atop the Olympus heavyweight division, might have something to say about this. He defeated Fury twice in a row. Fury obviously believes he won on both counts and is therefore undeterred.

“Oh, I’m coming for you, whoever you are,” he said. “When I come back as king, you will be overthrown.” Fury is known for his wild statements, but this time he seems earnest as videos of the man training regularly appear on the Internet. “This year,” he assured, “I will return to the top of heavyweight boxing.” Maybe this is easier said than done. Despite everything, Usyk still reigns supreme, and many teenage players are climbing the ladder. But once again Fury is unfazed.

“I beat the greatest boxer in history,” he said, “two of the top 10, number one and number seven. I beat both of them.” Fury didn’t name both men directly, but there’s a good chance he’s referring to Deontay Wilder, whom he faced in a grueling trilogy, and the powerful and hard-hitting Wladimir Klitschko, from whom he originally won the world title in 2015. “Power,” he added, “I don’t give a damn.”

At this point, it is unclear who Fury’s opponent will be. For years, there has been a lot of talk about Fury fighting another Briton, Anthony Joshua. However, Joshua’s recent car accident may keep him away from the ring for some time. As a result of the accident, he was taken to hospital where he lost two close friends. One thing is certain – the fact that Fury himself seems confident in his belief that he will once again be the king of the division. “I refuse to come down,” he said in the recording. “There is no resignation in me,” he added. “You can cut off my fucking legs and arms. I won’t give up. Then I’ll bite your fucking face off.” Tough words from a really tough man.
