Tyson Fury releases Anthony Joshua fight update with clear plan days before his return to boxing

Published

on

Tyson Fury has urged Anthony Joshua not to jeopardize his £150 million blockbuster against Deontay Wilder again. Fury and Joshua’s reunion took more than a decade.

He is prepared to fight Wilder after the American challenged him following his victory over Derek Chisora last weekend. Fury, however, appealed to the Olympic champion, who is scheduled to be at ringside this weekend, to refrain from doing so instead.

“If it happens, great, if it doesn’t happen, great too,” Fury told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I will have to think about Arslanbek Makhmudov on Saturday evening, but everything is going well [Joshua is] the fight I want next.”

He also added, “I know he just had a fight with Jake Paul, whatever… a fight is a real fight. So yeah, after this I’ll be ready right away.”

In another interview in north London, Fury said: “This fight was supposed to happen so many times in the last 10 years, but then someone had another fight in the meantime or someone got knocked out or injured. Forget Wilder, the man is a shell of himself and forget anyone else. Let me get through Saturday and then we’ll fight before the end of the year.”

“I’ve been out of the ring longer than him. I’ve had 16 months out of the ring, so let’s do it, let’s dance. I think we should start this fight as soon as possible, in case something happens in the meantime. In heavyweight boxing, anything can go wrong, there are no simple fights, and if you get knocked upside down, it’s over, over. I want another fight and I’m sure AJ feels the same.”

Meanwhile, it looks like Fury will face Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium without father John in his corner. Patriarch Fury has been an almost constant presence at his son’s side since his release from prison in 2015. However, he claimed that the former world champion was “finished” as a player and revealed that their relationship was “destroyed”.

Fury has made it clear that he is not concerned about whether his father shows up to make amends this weekend. “I am not aware of what happened, but he is entitled to his opinion,” he added. “Just like everyone else, and I’m sure it’ll be changed a million times over and over again. I didn’t really pay attention to it because I take it with a grain of salt.

“He might have been upset, he might have been a little down, he might have been depressed. I don’t know what he was going through. I don’t know if he’ll show up, and I don’t care.”

“I have things to do and who is in the crowd is not critical to me at all. I will only think about Arslanbek Makhmudov, I can’t wait and do my job.”

“Times Square was an incredible experience because of how tough it was to create.

“People were disconnected from the experience, and that’s what I felt: I want people to be engaged.”

“Boxing is not broken.

“We need to make boxing more open to everyone.

“It’s about affordability. It’s about accessibility.

“That’s why we stick with YouTube. That’s why we stick with TikTok.”

Eddie Hearn believes Tyson Fury lacks confidence ahead of his clash with Anthony Joshua later this year.

Joshua and Fury have signed a deal to face each other in the highly anticipated all-British blockbuster, which is expected to be staged in November.

“AJ” will be there will face the unknown Albanian Kristian Prenga during warm-ups in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on July 25.

Fury, who retired to beat Arslanbek Makhmudov on points in April, is also keen to fight again before facing his long-time rival, with an August 1 date being discussed.

“He’s going to do what he’s going to do,” the 46-year-old said Sky Sports Boxing.

“And if he feels like he needs a good fight, I like that because it tells me he’s not completely confident.

“He shot 12 good rounds with Makhmudov to the point where you really need more rounds?

“He told us, ‘You don’t need another fight.’

“In two years of boxing, we had four rounds with Jake Paul.

“You had 12 rounds with Makhmudov at Tottenham but you still feel you need more rounds to prepare for Anthony Joshua.

“More rounds won’t assist you, because I can see it.

“When Makhmudov came into that fight, I knew what AJ was going to do.”
