Tyson Fury admits he had last-minute concerns just days before his return to boxing
Published
2 months agoon
Tyson Fury appears to be dealing with some pre-fight jitters in the days before returning to the ring after watching Deontay Wilder fight Derek Chisora.
The “Gypsy King” will end another boxing career on Saturday evening when he faces Arslanbek Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Fury announced his retirement from the sport last year after consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.
However, the 37-year-old’s dramatic turnaround didn’t last long and he’s now preparing for a busy 2026 in the ring. Nevertheless, the former two-time world heavyweight champion appears to have some minor worries ahead of this weekend’s clash with the Russian, following Wilder’s odd fight with Chisora.
The two boxing veterans traded blows in a wild fight at the O2 Arena last weekend, with Wilder ultimately securing victory via split decision.
Both men traded punches for over 12 rounds in what was far from a technical fight. Fury admitted that the match was complex to watch and he hopes to play a little better when he returns.
“By the time the fight takes place on Saturday, I will have been out of the ring for 16 months,” Fury said InsideRingShow. “And at 37, 16 months is a long time, so I have some things to do and think about in my own mind to see how I feel.
“After watching the Deontay-Chisora fight, it was strenuous for me to watch. It was gloomy, it was heartbreaking, and I have never in my life seen two men slip up as badly as they did. And I’m like, am I f**king next? Is it me? So I told the guys, ‘If I’m even 10 percent as bad as these guys in my fight, take me to the field and shoot me.’
The build-up was overshadowed by confusion in the Fury camp after Tyson’s father, John, revealed he was no longer speaking to his son. Fury senior criticized his son for returning to the ring after a 16-month absence and believes he has not been the same since the trilogy with Wilder.
However, Fury told The Ring: “For my father, he wants the best for me. He wants me to retire and walk away, but if it were that basic, I would have quit five times already. But I don’t have that ability to let go. It could affect a lot of things, including family. My dad says he doesn’t talk to me – I guess he’s trying to encourage me not to fight anymore. But fighting is all I’ve ever known and all I’ll ever know.”
“It’s an obsession and sometimes you become selfish because in the beginning you want something in your life – you want to be a champion, you want to make money, have a house, cars and so on. Then it becomes an obsession. You want more, more, more. It starts to affect your family, home life, your wife, your children – everyone. It has to end, but for me it has no end. Mike Tyson fought recently at the age of 60, man.”

Tommy Fury admits his career is not the norm.
Fury, the younger brother of former world heavyweight champion Tyson, is in a unique position.
Due in part to the furore his name has caused, but also to the fame he gained on the reality show Love Island in 2019, the 27-year-old can choose his fights almost freely.
In a week in which he welcomed his second child with long-time girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague, whom he met on Love Island, “TNT” faces the toughest challenge of its career as 2017 World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall performs on Saturday at the AO Arena in Manchester live on DAZN pay-per-view.
The Manchester player will earn another seven-figure payday for fighting the 300-pound behemoth, who has only previously fought strongman rival Thor Björnson.
Fury has already cashed in millions after 14 rounds against YouTube sensations, Jake Paul and KSI, which attracted massive audiences and colossal pay-per-view purchases.
It’s these substantial events and checks that have pulled Fury away from the classic route and into the crossover scene, where there’s much less risk and much quicker reward.
“I can’t facilitate the way my career has gone,” he further said Ariel Helwani show.
“I’ve probably had the most amazing career ever because I’ve combined it with both sides.
“The fact is you have to know your worth.
“I’m not saying I’m a world champion because I’m far from it, but like them, they only fight once, twice or a year.
“It’s like me, I won’t fight for anything less than what I’m worth.
“At the end of the day, if it makes money, it makes sense and that’s why I’m getting back in the ring.
“I will never fight for anything I know I am not worthy of.”
Fury, who secured eight straight professional victories before back-to-back victories over the aforementioned Paul and KSI, brings legitimacy and experience to a scene that has attracted names more known for their social media following than their in-ring knowledge.
Jack Kay, nicknamed the “Final Boss of Ibiza”, rose to fame after his escapades on the Spanish party island last summer, and his viral fame landed him in a fight with rapper Jordan McCann.
Some gigantic influencers were mentioned Big stacks – who calls himself the toughest man in Britain – and Armz Korleone are also part of a confused night in Manchester.
Despite his claims that he aims to be a world champion one day, it seems his immediate future will be to continue making substantial money, and with a combined Instagram following of more than 10 million, both Fury and Hall will benefit greatly from six two-minute rounds of graft on Saturday.

On Saturday in Manchester, Tommy Fury will face former strongest man in the world, Eddie Hall.
Fury will meet Hall at the AO Arena live on DAZN pay-per-view and DAZN Ultimate.
Fury’s boxing career has stalled since two money-making bouts with YouTube sensations: Jake Paul and KSI.
The 27-year-old half-brother of former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury defeated both fighters by decision in 2023 and has fought just once since then after being sidelined with a hand injury.
The Manchester player withdrew from the scheduled fight with Darren Till, and then returned to Hungary in May last year after winning on points over Kenan Hanjalic.
Hall, who won the World’s Strongest Man competition in 2017, has only had one previous boxing fight, losing to rival strongman Thor Björnsson at another exhibition in 2022.
The 38-year-old is expected to weigh at least 10 stone more than his much more experienced rival and both fighters will fight over six two-minute rounds.
Taylor will face Floyd
On the undercard, Anthony Taylor will face Matt Floyd in a lightweight heavyweight bout.
Taylor, a former sparring partner of Jake Paul, was defeated by Fury in 2021 and is coming off back-to-back losses to Darren Till and Neeraj Goyat respectively.
Floyd is a former UBO cruiserweight champion who was defeated by James DeGale in a fierce bare-knuckle fight in September.
Undercard remaining
B Dave should beat Swarmz at lightweight heavyweight, while Armz Kormelone can stop Large Stacks in their heavyweight fight.
Rahim Amer may be too much for Adam Brooks at lightweight heavyweight, while Little Bellsy may overtake Andy Nguyen in a super bantamweight bout.
Sheena Bathory, formerly of Power Slap, can stop Christina Flanagan at welterweight.
Luke Nevin will likely overtake Karim Khallas at lightweight heavyweight, while Jack Kay, better known as the final Ibiza boss, could do the same against Jordan McCann, also at 175 pounds.
Jade Jones can stop Federica Riccio in a welterweight fight.
