Two-weight world champion Tim Bradley predicted how the fight between David Benavidez and Jai Opetaia would turn out.
Benavidez has reigned supreme at super middleweight and currently holds the WBC lithe heavyweight title, but the “Mexican Monster” seeks honors in the third division, which faces a tough test against unified cruiserweight champion Gilberto Ramirez in May.
If he succeeds, it remains to be seen whether Benavidez will be convinced to stay at cruiserweight or if he will keep his word and return to lithe heavyweight in pursuit of a clash with Dmitry Bivol.
However, if he decides to stay at 200 pounds, Opetaia will be the man fans will be clamoring for him to be with, despite the fact that the Australian was stripped of his IBF world title after outpointing Brandon Glanton in his Zuffa Boxing debut.
I keep talking his YouTube channelHall of Famer Bradley talked about this potential matchup, explaining why he thinks Benavidez would have no problem handing Opetaia the first loss of his career.
“He [Benavidez] he would stop Glanton, he would serve him. I understand that styles cause fights, I get that. But damn it, Benavidez’s style trumps everything, trumps every style. He was there with the boxers, he was there with [David] Morrell can punch, he can box, he can punch southpaw, just like Jai Opetaia.
“You haven’t seen his last few fights before? You haven’t seen him fight against [Mairis] Briedis? Brother, the guy ran out of juice, he ran out of gas, and Briedis is a little dude. Benavidez trains at 200 pounds and then works up to 175 pounds.
“He still has that quickness and arm quickness and probably has more pop in his shots at 200 pounds or 190 pounds. He’s going to be chilly at cruiserweight, he’s going to bust Ramirez, he’s going to kick Ramirez’s ass… Then Jai Opetaia will get that too.”
The Zurdo-Benavidez fight will take place on Saturday, May 2 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with Opetaia planning his next move after receiving his IBF belt.
Next weekend’s cruiserweight clash between Viddal Riley and Mateusz Masternak has now taken on even greater importance, with the winner having a chance to fight for the vacant IBF title, likely against former WBO champion Chris Billam-Smith.
