Thomas Hearns puts just two men above himself when naming the top 10 greatest fighters of all time

IN Thomas Hearns According to him, only two fighters – both of whom fought in a weight class in which he had never competed – could be considered better than him.

Ironically, the two fighters who defeated him rank lower on Hearns’ own top ten, which includes four fighters he fought during his Hall of Fame career.

One of boxing’s most critical figures in the 1980s, Hearns was known for his distinctive appearance, stocky frame, quick punching combinations and a right hand that remains one of the most devastating equalizers in the sport outside the heavyweight division.

Asked by a journalist James Slater to name the 10 greatest fighters of all time, the 6-foot-1-inch icon placed middleweight legend Marvin Hagler at number 10. Hagler became celebrated for stopping Hearns in their unforgettable three-round “War” in 1985.

Sugar Ray Leonard, who overtook Hearns in 1981 in one of the biggest fights of the decade, finished only sixth. Wilfred Benitez, who went the distance with Hearns in 1982, opened Hearns’ top five, while Roberto Durán, whom Hearns crushed in two rounds in 1984, finished one place higher in 4th.

Despite these defeats, “The Killer” took 3rd place, ahead of him by only two competitors. The first two places were taken by Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, iconic heavyweight fighters whose rivalry delighted the sports world in the 1970s.

In a 29-year career spanning 67 fights and 29 years, Hearns has recorded 61 wins, five losses and one draw. The Detroit legend won world titles in the welterweight, super middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight and airy heavyweight divisions. Tardy in his campaign, he talked about the idea of facing Mike Tyson, but coach Emanuel Steward turned it down.

Tony Bellew Reviews Anthony Joshua's Comeback Victory Over Kristian Prenga After Knockdown Drama

Anthony Joshua may have earned a knockout win over Kristian Prenga but the fight certainly didn’t unfold as most people expected.

Joshua was facing the Albanian in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it looked like a massive upset could be on the cards when he was dropped twice in the opening round.

‘AJ’ was able to recover and went on to secure a second round knockout victory to prevent the shock lossseemingly paving the way for the battle against Tyson Fury later this year.

One man who was ringside to witness the battle was former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellewand he praised Joshua’s ability to turn things around in the fight after describing it as ‘chaos’.

“We predicted round two but I don’t think we foresaw that. That was chaos. He doesn’t see the uppercut coming and finds himself on the floor without knowing how he got there.

“The second one he did see it coming and he was able to clench down on the jaw. He got up and then the experience that he has he used tonight because he tied him up. Against Andy Ruiz he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t know how to do that, but tonight he did.

“He showed once again there is no quit. To be that hurt in the first round and get up, that’s the recoveries of power. People talk about your chin, but it’s not, it’s the level of fitness that gets you up from the floor.

“When Joshua gets a fighter hurt he’s the best finisher in the division. Whenever he hurts someone they’re gone. I haven’t seen him drop anybody and they survive, only Andy Ruiz. He’s a ruthless finisher.”

The clash between Joshua and Fury is now expected to be announced soon for later this year, after Fury won his own interim fight on Friday by defeating Mariusz Wach.
