Thomas Hearns names the best champion he has faced after 19 world title fights

Thomas Hearns says one man stands alone as the greatest boxer of all time

Many will be surprised to discover that Thomas Hearns, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of his era, did not call Sugar Ray Leonard or Marvin Hagler the best opponents he ever faced.

“The Hitman” first faced the former in 1981, when Leonard emerged from a thrilling welterweight bout to win in the 14th round by stoppage.

The two men then clashed again in 1989, this time at the catchweight of 164 pounds, with many believing Hearns had an unfortunate result in a draw.

However, based on their two iconic fights, Hearns nonetheless admitted that Leonard had greater skill, strength, hand speed, boxing IQ and jab than any of his other opponents.

As for Hagler, their brilliant three-round middleweight war in 1985 was ultimately enough for Hearns to rank him as having the greatest beard and strength of any fighter he had faced.

However, despite defeats to both Leonard and Hagler, the American considered Wilfred Benitez, whom he overtook in 1982, as his best opponent in the general classification.

The two clashed in a super welterweight bout that saw Benitez, who had just defeated Roberto Duran, defend his WBC world title for the third time.

For this particular assignment, Hearns was forced to take a much more measured approach – compared to the skilled technician – to what he had shown in previous fights, which ultimately allowed him to gain the majority advantage.

I’m talking to Ring MagazineHearns praised his former opponent’s clever moves and overall skill set, stating that he was slightly better than Leonard and Hagler.

“I would say Wilfred Benitez was very good. He was skillful and very cunning. I like Benitez’s craft. He moved well and fought all over the ring.”

Tony Bellew Reviews Anthony Joshua's Comeback Victory Over Kristian Prenga After Knockdown Drama

Anthony Joshua may have earned a knockout win over Kristian Prenga but the fight certainly didn’t unfold as most people expected.

Joshua was facing the Albanian in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it looked like a massive upset could be on the cards when he was dropped twice in the opening round.

‘AJ’ was able to recover and went on to secure a second round knockout victory to prevent the shock lossseemingly paving the way for the battle against Tyson Fury later this year.

One man who was ringside to witness the battle was former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellewand he praised Joshua’s ability to turn things around in the fight after describing it as ‘chaos’.

“We predicted round two but I don’t think we foresaw that. That was chaos. He doesn’t see the uppercut coming and finds himself on the floor without knowing how he got there.

“The second one he did see it coming and he was able to clench down on the jaw. He got up and then the experience that he has he used tonight because he tied him up. Against Andy Ruiz he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t know how to do that, but tonight he did.

“He showed once again there is no quit. To be that hurt in the first round and get up, that’s the recoveries of power. People talk about your chin, but it’s not, it’s the level of fitness that gets you up from the floor.

“When Joshua gets a fighter hurt he’s the best finisher in the division. Whenever he hurts someone they’re gone. I haven’t seen him drop anybody and they survive, only Andy Ruiz. He’s a ruthless finisher.”

The clash between Joshua and Fury is now expected to be announced soon for later this year, after Fury won his own interim fight on Friday by defeating Mariusz Wach.
