The unified heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, was moved aside after the elbow surgery, but has an eye on several options when he returns to the ring this year.
The main among these options is a very expected comprehensive start with Tyson Fury. Two stars have been circulating for years without a fight. After Fury’s losses towards Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed championship in massive weight last year, there seemed to be a chance to fight. However, this window was closed by Fury, who suddenly announced its pension in January. It seemed that the Fury feasted back at the beginning of this month, but he started to social media to say that it was happily retired.
“This is what a pension looks like for a gypsy king” Fury said in a post on Instagram. “I’m not too shabby. I was not in a hurry to go back to boxing and take my face for what? Why would I come back? I asked this question. So here I am. I am retired and I am retired. I have nothing to prove to anyone and nothing to return.”
With uncertainty surrounding the return of Fury, the promoter of Joshuy, Eddie Hearn, turned to the future of his warrior after returning.
“He will only fight once this year,” said Hearn ESPN. “It will be good in mid -September and by that time we will know for sure whether Fury will come back or not. But [Joshua’s opponent] It will also depend on what is happening in [Daniel] Dubois vs. Usyk Fight. In this respect, I like our place and if none of them is available, we will fight someone else. “
Hearn said that 35-year-old Joshua would like to avenge his stunning knockout loss in the fifth round of Dubois in September last year. But if fury is fighting, they will be targeted. Hearn is not sure if Fury’s pension will remain, regardless of what the former heavyweight champion says in social media.
“I just don’t think he can leave it alone,” said Hearn. “Do you know why? Because he doesn’t have little. He is still at the peak of his powers and it is very complex to move away from the fight like Anthony Joshua, when you still have him. And that’s why I think it will happen.”
Another option for Joshua is a duel with the former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, 39. The fight of Joshua-Wilder was discussed a few years ago when Joshua was a united champion and Wilder had the title of WBC. Both sides could not reach the financial conditions for the fight and went along separate roads. Both sides were again leveled to a potential fight in 2023, but Wilder was detained in subsequent fights with Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.
If Wilder defeated the journeyman Tyrrell Herndon in June, the fight of Joshua-Wilder could return to the table.
“If Wilder returns and looks great, we’ll probably start talking about it again,” said Hearn. “I do not exclude it at all. It will always be an stimulating fight, but certainly the emphasis is on fury and maybe Dubois if he manages to go through Usyk.”
