While Dmitry Bivol was scheduled to defend his unified featherlight heavyweight titles against IBF mandatory challenger Michael Eifert, Callum Smith and David Morrell were set to face off to determine who would be next in line. Now, after this fight was canceled, the WBO has released an update.
Smith, a former WBA super middleweight world champion, won the WBO interim featherlight heavyweight title when he defeated Joshua Buatsi in a fight of the year last February.
Smith hasn’t fought since then as he patiently waits to see how the 175-pound division develops and whether he’ll get a chance to fight Bivol or become a full world champion.
The WBO ordered Smith to face his own mandatory challenger in Morrell. However, Smith’s injury meant that the main attraction of the match was the Liverpool undercard, which will now feature Ben Whitaker as the headliner.
ON XWBO president Gustavo Olivieri explained that Smith has 10 days to “submit a certified medical certificate” detailing his injury and that he will have 180 days after the Bivol-Eifert fight (Saturday, May 23) to fulfill his obligation and defeat Morrell.
“Matchroom Boxing has officially notified the WBO that interim featherlight heavyweight champion Callum Smith has suffered an injury that prevents him from participating in his scheduled mandatory fight with David Morrell.
“Accordingly, the WBO will grant Team Smith a 10-day period to submit a medical certificate detailing the diagnosis, prognosis, recovery period and expected return to competition.
“Under WBO regulations, Mr. Smith has 180 days from the Bivol-Eifert fight to fulfill his mandatory obligations to Mr. Morrell. Failure to comply with this period will result in the WBO interim featherlight heavyweight title being deemed vacant.”
“The winner of Smith-Morrell MUST face the winner of Bivol-Eifert to end interim champion status.”
Therefore, if the medical reports are verified, the Liverpudlian will have until Thursday, November 19 to defend his belt against Morrell, otherwise he will be stripped of his interim WBO featherlight heavyweight title.
Perhaps this is a win-win situation for Bivol, who may now be able to fit in a fight on his blockbuster list – which includes a trilogy with Artur Beterbiev and a clash with WBC champion David Benavidez – before being ordered to face a mandatory WBO fight, either Smith or Morrell.
