Terence Crawford retired following his victory over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Coach Brian McIntyre was instrumental in the game plan that made this goal possible.
“Bud” Crawford moved up two divisions from his previous appearance to challenge for Canelo’s undisputed super middleweight world title, winning by unanimous decision to become a fifth weight class champion.
The 38-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska announced his retirement shortly thereafter, giving him time to participate in an undefeated campaign that was overseen from start to finish by coach “BoMac” after working together in the amateur ranks.
Canelo is scheduled to return in September in pursuit of more championships, BoMac believes they have the man who can stop this from happening: Lester Martinez.
I’m talking to Pro Box TVthe renowned trainer talked about his protégé’s chances and said that Crawford needs to improve his game while sparring with Martinez before the fight with Alvarez.
“People are starting to talk about Lester Martinez. That’s great, man. He fits in there. Personally, I think he could beat Canelo. You know we have a plan, right?
– Damn sure [helped Crawford]. It was great work. This is where you saw Bud’s greatness, changing his style and what he had to do to engage with Lester. Lester, one of his weaknesses [could] sometimes I play against him, but [he] he dealt with it and pushed Terence to a level where he had to come in, go out and do what he wanted in [Canelo] fight. It was phenomenal.”
Martinez fought Christian Mbilli for the WBC interim title on the Canelo–Crawford undercard, and the fight ended in a draw. Mbilli, who retained the interim belt, has now been promoted to full champion following Crawford’s retirement.
A rematch was ordered following the fight, which may still take place, and Mbilli is currently considering options for his first defense, with Canelo himself next.
Guatemala’s Martinez has time on his side at age 30 and just 20 fights into his campaign, and many believe a world title is within his reach, especially with BoMac’s mastermind in his corner. If the opportunity arises to face the Mexican icon, the coach believes he will be able to solve this mystery again. The first fight will be Immanuwel Aleem, who will fight again for the interim WBC belt on March 21.
