Teofimo Lopez vs. Shakur Stevenson – results and post-fight report
Published
5 months agoon
On Saturday at Madison Square Garden, Shakur Stevenson led a masterclass during which he dethroned Teofimo Lopez, the WBO and Ring Magazine world champion, on points.
Stevenson, who made a weight change, outclassed Lopez, losing only one round on all three judges’ scorecards in Fresh York.
From the first round, the 28-year-old had an excellent IQ and skill set to admire, and Lopez struggled to pin down his opponent.
Stevenson (25-0, 11 KO) couldn’t miss, overcoming the frustration of “The Takeover,” who was cut and looked like he needed a knockout at the hall sign.
Lopez (22-2, 13 KO) had his best round of the fight in the seventh round, punching Stevenson in the body.
However, his resurgence was short-lived, and Stevenson continued to attack him with piercing combinations and masterful defense.
Lopez was left bloody and broken on Jan. 10, and on Jan. 11 his head snapped back twice when a Newark player landed a one-sided punch.
The 28-year-old was desperately looking for a last-round knockout, but it never seemed likely and the fight was put on the scorecards, with the result merely a formality.
All three judges scored the fight 119-110, and Stevenson became world champion in four weight categories and inflicted his rival’s second professional defeat.
Stevenson also holds the WBC lightweight belt, and it is unclear whether he will remain at 140 pounds or return to a lower weight class.
Stevenson exclaimed Conor Benn in the post-fight interview and there was a piercing exchange of words between them in the ring.
Davis stops Ortiz
Keyshawn Davis sent a statement to the super lightweight division by stopping Jamaine Ortiz in the final round.
Davis (14-0, 10 KO) stopped Ortiz (20-3-1, 10 KO) in both the 11th and 12th rounds before the referee waved and stopped the fight.
“The Businessman” made his debut in the 140-pound division, and after dominating throughout, the 26-year-old finished the competition in style.
The Norfolk fighter fired a devastating body shot in the 11th round that left Ortiz writhing on the canvas in pain.
The 29-year-old bravely beat the counter, but Davis felt the finish.
Ortiz was checked by the ring doctor at the beginning of both the 11th and 12th rounds with his eyes fully closed, but was allowed to continue fighting on both occasions.
Another brutal body shot in the final round left “Technician” crumpled to the canvas and Judge Thomas Taylor intervened.
Carrington is the novel world champion
Bruce Carrington became the novel WBC featherweight world champion after a stunning ninth-round knockout of Carlos Castro.
Carrington (17-0, 10 KO) detonated with a brutal right hand, followed by a three-punch combination that put Castro (30-4, 14 KO) on his back and the 31-year-old was unable to beat the count.
Carrington started the competition well, but his world title dreams were in doubt after suffering a right hand injury.
“Shu Shu” was shouted in the fifth quarter, but he responded well in the following rounds and regained control.
The Brownsville player closed the event in spectacular fashion, landing Castro with four brutal punches and winning the vacant title.
Miller wins despite hair disaster
Jarrell Miller lost his wig during a dramatic split decision victory over Kingsley Ibeh.
Miller (27-1-2, 22 KO), fighting for the first time since a draw with Andy Ruiz Jr in August 2024, was wearing a wig during a fight.
However, Ibeh (16-3-1, 14 KO) quickly took him down, knocking him out in the second round.
“Substantial Baby” threw his toupee into the crowd before the start of the third round and led to a good move at the end that defeated the 32-year-old in a really bad fight.
The score of 96-94 in Ibeha’s favor was replaced by two scores of 97-93 and gave Miller the victory.
Undercard remaining
On Friday, due to Austin “Ammo” Williams’ illness, the middleweight world title fight against Carlos Adames was canceled.
Williams (20-1, 13 KO) defeated recently replaced Wendy Toussaint (17-4, 7 KO) by unanimous decision.
Saudi super lightweight Ziyad Almaayouf (7-1-1, 1 KO) lost on points to Kevin Castillo (6-2-1) for the first time as a professional.

On Wednesday, Lewis Crocker heads to Australia to defend his IBF welterweight world title against Liam Paro for the first time.
Crocker will face Paro at the Pat Rafter Arena in Queensland, live on DAZN in the UK and Kayo Sports in Australia.
Crocker (22-0, 11 KO) became world champion in September, defeating Paddy Donovan twice before winning the rematch by split decision.
Man from Belfast recorded his second victory over Donovan after the first victory in March last year, and his rival was disqualified for hitting him after the bell.
Paro (27-1, 16 KO) is trying to become a world champion in two weight categories, having previously reigned in the super-lightweight division.
The 30-year-old won the title with a unanimous decision victory over Subriel Matias in Puerto Rico before winning the belt in his first defense against Richardson Hitchins.
The Australian has since won twice, overtaking David Papot in his last appearance in September.

McKean meets Taliva
Heavyweight Demsey McKean will look to continue his rebuild when he faces Liam Talivaa for the vacant IBF Pan Pacific title.
McKean (24-2, 16 KO) had his career cut miniature after a last-round loss to Filip Hrgovic, followed by a brutal first-round loss to Moses Itauma.
The 35-year-old southpaw returned to winning ways with back-to-back stoppage victories.
Talivaa (8-2, 4 KO) last won the IBF Oceania-Orient title, defeating Faiga Opelu by first-round stoppage.
Undercard remaining
At cruiserweight, Luke Modini (13-0, 11 KO) will likely need distance to beat Peng Qu (17-2-1, 12 KO), while Riley Candy (8-1, 5 KO) could stop Nathan Watson (11-3, 3 KO) at super middleweight.

Heavyweight Nelson Asofa-Solomon (2-0, 2 KO) can secure a third straight knockout over debutant George Burgess, and Stevan Ivic (8-0-1, 2 KO) can do the same against Caleb Tialu (3-7, 3 KO), also a heavyweight.
