Teddy Atlas says current world champion should retire: “I saw what happened to Muhammad Ali”

Iconic trainer and pundit Teddy Atlas, who knows the dangers of the sport better than most, has urged one of the pound-for-pound boxing stars to hang up his gloves.

Atlas, along with Mike Tyson’s former trainer Kevin Rooney, plied their trade under the tutelage of Cus D’Amato at the Catskill Boxing Club in Recent York.

During this time, Atlas could only benefit from D’Amato’s wisdom, which he then applied to his work in the corner of former world heavyweight champion Michael Moorer.

For this reason The former coach is now considered a highly respected figure in the industryand an expert on fighter aircraft safety.

What should be of real interest, then, is the fact that Atlas encouraged heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk to implement his exit plan, because he told Grosvenor Casinos that he would like to see Usyk sail off into the sunset.

“Usyk should retire… I’ve seen too many depressed endings. I’ve seen Muhammad Ali. I’ve seen other guys who get less attention, but it’s no less scary to witness.”

“I want to see a cheerful ending to this great film. Usyk’s film has inspired so many people in so many ways outside of boxing, so that’s what I want.

“I know I won’t get it. I know that. I’m not saying he has to do it. I’m not saying he shouldn’t continue.

“It’s still in great shape in many ways. I understand all of that. I just understand that my company is one of the most ruthless companies in the world.”

Usyk hasn’t fought since July, when he masterfully knocked down Daniel Dubois in the fifth round.

The Ukrainian previously became the undisputed two-division champion after overtaking Tyson Fury and then successfully defended the titles in a rematch last year.

While the 38-year-old may seem to be showing few signs of deterioration, there is always the danger that Father Time could rear its ugly head at any moment.

Tony Bellew Reviews Anthony Joshua's Comeback Victory Over Kristian Prenga After Knockdown Drama

Anthony Joshua may have earned a knockout win over Kristian Prenga but the fight certainly didn’t unfold as most people expected.

Joshua was facing the Albanian in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it looked like a massive upset could be on the cards when he was dropped twice in the opening round.

‘AJ’ was able to recover and went on to secure a second round knockout victory to prevent the shock lossseemingly paving the way for the battle against Tyson Fury later this year.

One man who was ringside to witness the battle was former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellewand he praised Joshua’s ability to turn things around in the fight after describing it as ‘chaos’.

“We predicted round two but I don’t think we foresaw that. That was chaos. He doesn’t see the uppercut coming and finds himself on the floor without knowing how he got there.

“The second one he did see it coming and he was able to clench down on the jaw. He got up and then the experience that he has he used tonight because he tied him up. Against Andy Ruiz he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t know how to do that, but tonight he did.

“He showed once again there is no quit. To be that hurt in the first round and get up, that’s the recoveries of power. People talk about your chin, but it’s not, it’s the level of fitness that gets you up from the floor.

“When Joshua gets a fighter hurt he’s the best finisher in the division. Whenever he hurts someone they’re gone. I haven’t seen him drop anybody and they survive, only Andy Ruiz. He’s a ruthless finisher.”

The clash between Joshua and Fury is now expected to be announced soon for later this year, after Fury won his own interim fight on Friday by defeating Mariusz Wach.
