Shakur Stevenson recalls sparring session with Teofimo Lopez ahead of world title fight

Shakur Stevenson believes he has gathered enough information on Teofimo Lopez to capitalize on his “mistakes” on January 31.

The pair will fight for Lopez’s WBO super lightweight title at Madison Square Garden in New York in what may be the most intriguing fight announced so far for 2026.

Entering the competition as a slight favorite, Stevenson – the undefeated southerner who currently holds the WBC lightweight belt – is now seeking to become a four-division world champion.

Perhaps it’s also no surprise that many are picking him to dethrone Lopez, especially considering his last performance against William Zepeda in July.

During this time, Stevenson demonstrated his versatility, often switching his approach from aggressive to calculated to convincingly overtake his relentless opponent.

In addition, the 28-year-old’s consistency at the world level has inspired many to see him as a safer bet against Lopez – an extremely talented but largely unpredictable champion.

The tendency to be stormy and cool may have taken some of the shine off “The Takeover,” though victories over Vasyl Lomachenko and Josh Taylor equally proved he was capable of extraordinary things.

Either way, Stevenson, who has previously participated in several rounds of sparring with Lopez, believes his superior skills will pay off later this month.

I’m talking to THE WHOLE FIGHT AGAINST SMOKEthe Newark fighter insisted that regardless of the sparring stories, there was no world in which Lopez could beat him.

“We sparred for three rounds. It was fun; [there] there really wasn’t much to deal with. We got there, I felt like I got off, he probably felt like he did something.

“From what I remember, I feel like he can’t beat me. He does a lot of things right – I think he’s brilliant – but it’s just the basic things where I feel like he makes mistakes and I think I’ll take advantage of those mistakes.

Lopez had previously publicly claimed that as the sparring session progressed, he began to have success in solving the near-unsolvable mystery of Stevenson’s style.

Tony Bellew Reviews Anthony Joshua's Comeback Victory Over Kristian Prenga After Knockdown Drama

Anthony Joshua may have earned a knockout win over Kristian Prenga but the fight certainly didn’t unfold as most people expected.

Joshua was facing the Albanian in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it looked like a massive upset could be on the cards when he was dropped twice in the opening round.

‘AJ’ was able to recover and went on to secure a second round knockout victory to prevent the shock lossseemingly paving the way for the battle against Tyson Fury later this year.

One man who was ringside to witness the battle was former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellewand he praised Joshua’s ability to turn things around in the fight after describing it as ‘chaos’.

“We predicted round two but I don’t think we foresaw that. That was chaos. He doesn’t see the uppercut coming and finds himself on the floor without knowing how he got there.

“The second one he did see it coming and he was able to clench down on the jaw. He got up and then the experience that he has he used tonight because he tied him up. Against Andy Ruiz he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t know how to do that, but tonight he did.

“He showed once again there is no quit. To be that hurt in the first round and get up, that’s the recoveries of power. People talk about your chin, but it’s not, it’s the level of fitness that gets you up from the floor.

“When Joshua gets a fighter hurt he’s the best finisher in the division. Whenever he hurts someone they’re gone. I haven’t seen him drop anybody and they survive, only Andy Ruiz. He’s a ruthless finisher.”

The clash between Joshua and Fury is now expected to be announced soon for later this year, after Fury won his own interim fight on Friday by defeating Mariusz Wach.
