Ryan Garcia called out for catchweight fight by ‘mini Mike Tyson’

Ryan Garcia has been invited to a catchweight bout that he has been “preparing” for “almost three years,” despite reports indicating he is preparing to fight Mario Barrios in February.

The 27-year-old was last seen losing to Rolando Romero, the current WBA welterweight world champion, by unanimous decision in May.

Back then, Garcia had just returned from a yearlong drug ban, which he received from the New York State Athletic Commission after testing positive for ostarine.

A destitute performance against Romero caused him to go down in the second round and he was easily defeated.

It was a far cry from his performance against Devin Haney, whom he knocked down three times and ultimately passed in April 2024 before his majority victory was overturned due to a positive drug test.

Despite being winless since 2023 when he stopped Oscar Duarte, Garcia is expected to secure an immediate world title shot against WBC welterweight champion Barrios on February 21.

While that appears to be the plan, “King Ry” has now been called up to fight Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, who drew against Lamont Roach Jr. last month.

According to Cruz, with whom he spoke ESPN KnockoutGarcia remained on his radar for quite some time.

“This fight has been in the works for almost three years now and I think it would be more than appealing to all fans.”

Since Cruz typically fights at 140 pounds, he believes an agreed-upon catchweight between welterweight and super lightweight could be an ideal solution for both sides.

“I think these would be issues to discuss internally [the fight could happen] in the intermediate category, or a [catchweight]”

As it stands, Garcia is still planning to fight Barrios in February, pending an official announcement, but a fight with Cruz – dubbed a mini Mike Tyson for his relentless style and praised by the heavyweight legend himself – could become an option later this year.

Tony Bellew Reviews Anthony Joshua's Comeback Victory Over Kristian Prenga After Knockdown Drama

Anthony Joshua may have earned a knockout win over Kristian Prenga but the fight certainly didn’t unfold as most people expected.

Joshua was facing the Albanian in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it looked like a massive upset could be on the cards when he was dropped twice in the opening round.

‘AJ’ was able to recover and went on to secure a second round knockout victory to prevent the shock lossseemingly paving the way for the battle against Tyson Fury later this year.

One man who was ringside to witness the battle was former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellewand he praised Joshua’s ability to turn things around in the fight after describing it as ‘chaos’.

“We predicted round two but I don’t think we foresaw that. That was chaos. He doesn’t see the uppercut coming and finds himself on the floor without knowing how he got there.

“The second one he did see it coming and he was able to clench down on the jaw. He got up and then the experience that he has he used tonight because he tied him up. Against Andy Ruiz he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t know how to do that, but tonight he did.

“He showed once again there is no quit. To be that hurt in the first round and get up, that’s the recoveries of power. People talk about your chin, but it’s not, it’s the level of fitness that gets you up from the floor.

“When Joshua gets a fighter hurt he’s the best finisher in the division. Whenever he hurts someone they’re gone. I haven’t seen him drop anybody and they survive, only Andy Ruiz. He’s a ruthless finisher.”

The clash between Joshua and Fury is now expected to be announced soon for later this year, after Fury won his own interim fight on Friday by defeating Mariusz Wach.
