Oscar De La Hoya says 28 year old world champion is the “best he’s ever seen”

Oscar De La Hoya called the current world champion, known for his silky skills and extraordinary judgment of distance, “the greatest fighter” he has ever seen.

Of all the sport’s record-breaking stars, Oleksandr Usyk and Naoya Inoue have undoubtedly established themselves as two of the best.

However, Usyk in particular is now widely regarded as the top boxer in the world, especially after the recent announcement of Terence Crawford’s retirement.

Being a three-time undisputed champion in two weight classes, the Ukrainian has left himself little to prove, but clearly still wants to improve on his brilliant legacy.

With two wins over Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois respectively, Usyk also showed that an ambitious move to heavyweight was never beyond his capabilities.

As for Inoue, the undisputed king of two divisions, like Usyk, he is a masterful technician, but also has enough power to knock out any fighter in the lower weight classes.

Even though these two are rightly considered the sport’s standard-bearers, De La Hoya seems to believe that Shakur Stevenson, the WBC lightweight champion, is ultimately the best.

The three-weight world champion barely lost a round as a professional, defeating the likes of Oscar Valdez, Jamel Herring and William Zepeda in mostly one-sided fights.

And now, with him, he is preparing to fight the WBO super lightweight world champion Teofimo Lopez on January 31, Stevenson was given the opportunity to capture his most significant victory.

But it was actually over a year ago when De La Hoya spoke to Shay Shay Clubhe praised the American for his “lovely style” and “great technique”.

“[Stevenson is] the greatest warrior I have ever seen. Pretty style, great technique, has punching power, has a chin… but he needs self-confidence to fight.

“He needs to believe in himself to give a good performance and sell [tickets]. That’s the problem – it doesn’t sell seats.”
