Netflix supports Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao
Netflix is guided by familiarity, and this calculation says more about recognition than about Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s age. and Manny Pacquiao.
An uncomfortable but direct comparison. Mayweather and Pacquiao remain recognizable among everyday sports fans from generation to generation. Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, despite fighting two undisputed high-level fights in the delicate heavyweight division with significant promotional support, remain largely unknown outside the sport’s mainstream audience. The difference in name recognition helps explain why a rematch between two men approaching fifty drafts has a broader appeal than dynamic champions in their prime.
Mayweather and Pacquiao have appeared on HBO and Showtime over the years. Their fights were repeatedly promoted and discussed in mainstream sports media until they became culturally inevitable. Even those who only tuned in occasionally could identify them. Exposure accumulated over time.
Today’s elite combatants operate in a much more fragmented environment. One substantial fight is coming to one subscription platform. The next one is somewhere else. Competing champions often belong to separate promotional ecosystems. There is no single, common stage on which sport consistently convenes to the same mass audience. Hardcore fans are following closely. Casual viewers rarely encounter enough repetition to build attachment.
Skill has never been a limit to this sport. Boxing remains opulent in elite talent, but the path to recognition has narrowed. When characters do not consistently share space or appear before the same broad audience, familiarity with them becomes sporadic rather than automatic.
From Netflix’s perspective, Mayweather-Pacquiao II works immediately. The competition is understandable. The names do not require a low introduction. Promoting Beterbiev-Bivol to a global mainstream audience would require significant preparatory work, including additional context for viewers unfamiliar with either. Platforms built on immediate engagement tend to favor content that works from the get-go.
The 2015 meeting between Mayweather and Pacquiao still holds a record for viewership. It was not possible to create a lasting wave of regular viewers. Since then, boxing’s biggest nights have become more and more occasional and less civilized. Talent remains deeply beyond divisions. Collective visibility is gradually decreasing.
When dynamic champions have difficulty reaching retired icons, recognition comes into focus. Netflix reacts to what is already measurable. The more tough task now falls to the sport itself: rebuilding the familiarity that once naturally built up over time.

Ben Whittaker’s next few months are already taking shape following his quick knockout victory in Liverpool, and Adam Smith outlines a busy summer schedule that should finally see the delicate heavyweight fighter face stronger tests
Smith said Whittaker is expected to return to the United States in overdue June on the Jaron “Boots” Ennis card, then return to the UK in the summer for a major date in his hometown of Birmingham.
Whittaker stopped Brian Suarez in two rounds last weekend and performed brilliantly throughout, adding another early finish to the stretch that helped rebuild attention around him after his first fight with Liam Cameron ended in a draw.
Smith said the June outing would support expose Whittaker to a wider audience ahead of a bigger national night later in the year.
“He will fight at the end of June in America at the Boots Ennis gala. That’s good. Show him to a global audience. Then he will come back here in overdue summer, maybe early September and fight in Birmingham in a huge fight,” Adam Smith said in an interview with Sport Boxing.
Smith also named British opponents who could be next, naming Lyndon Arthur, Brad Rea and Craig Richards as possible options once Whittaker returns home.
Smith believes that in the long term, bigger domestic fights with Joshua Buatsi and Anthony Yard should come within the next year if Whittaker continues to win.
“Buatsis and Yards need to be delivered within the next 6-12 months.”
Whittaker has had a lot of notoriety since turning pro, but the activity and matchmaking are looking more grave now. The next two fights should tell more than the first ten.
