Morning Report: Sean O’Malley would still ‘like to consider myself the GOAT’ of bantamweight by end of career

Sean O'Malley is back on a win streak, one that could vault him back to the top of the all-time great list at 135 pounds when it's all said and done.

It's been two years since O'Malley had UFC gold around his waist, with his bantamweight reign ending at the hands of Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306. An immediate rematch ended with Dvalishvili scoring a dominant submission win over O'Malley, knocking “Suga†out of the title picture for the foreseeable future.

O'Malley has bounced back with consecutive victories over Song Yadong and Aiemann Zahabi, the latter taking place at the massive UFC White House event, and if he can become champion again he'd like to have his seat at the table in GOAT conversations.

“It's always hard to say who's the GOAT, who's this, who's that?†O'Malley said in a UFC on Paramount+ interview. “Looking back on my career, it's like Aljamain Sterling was the GOAT until I knocked him out. And now Petr Yan can be considered the GOAT, I beat him. So it's hard to say. Merab's up there. Defended the belt three times. It's hard to say who's the GOAT.

“After it's all said and done I'd like to consider myself the GOAT. I think Petr goes out there and beats Merab, I go out there and get a clear, decisive victory over Petr Yan, that's two huge wins over two of the best, two out of the three. If Petr, Aljo, and Merab are the three GOATS in conversation, and I've beat two of them. I do want to get that Merab fight back someday, but it has to make sense timing-wise. It's hard to say. It's up for opinion. In my opinion, who's the bantamweight GOAT? I guess we'll get to find out Oct. 24 and go from there.â€

Oct. 24 is the date Yan and Dvalishvili clash for a third time, with their matchup serving as the co-main event of UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi. O'Malley defeated Yan in a hotly contested fight in 2022, and he knows Yan winning his series over Dvalishvili presents the best chance for him to be booked in a title fight, since Dvalishvili has already beaten O'Malley twice.

The MMA math needs to add up in O'Malley's favor, and overall he still likes his chances.

“I'm 31,†O'Malley said. “I'll be 32 in October. Just really trying to maximize my potential. I feel like I did a really good job in my 20s. Not regretting anything in my 20s, I was able to focus, do what I needed to do in my 20s. And I want to do that in my 30s. I want to be able to be as active as possible, as long as the body holds up. I feel like I have a lot more to give back to this game.

“It's interesting, the come-up, you're motivated and then you get to a certain spot and then you realize you can really achieve greatness, so I feel like I have a second motivation now is to achieve real greatness and I have such opportunities—If I can get a win over Merab, if I can another win over Petr, if I can get a win over Umar [Nurmagomedov], if I can get a win over Cory [Sandhagen]. There's so much greatness yet to be achieve that I feel like I still can accomplish, so there's the motivation for greatness.â€

O'Malley is almost nine years deep into his UFC career and overall he's proud of all that he's accomplished. His record inside the octagon stands at 12-3 with one no-contest. He's even prouder when he recalls how far he's come, and confident there's still a long way to go.

“Grateful, because you see so many different guys over the last 12 years, in Arizona, training, you see so many different guys come into different gyms, train, most of them don't get into the UFC,†O'Malley said. “Some get into the UFC, they win a couple of fights and they're not there anymore. To actually be in this position where I've made a lot of money, I became popular, I've done it. I've done what I set out to do and that was become one of the biggest stars in the UFC.

“I feel like I was on a rocket ship and those two Merab losses kind of plateaued me a little bit. I feel like my ceiling's so much higher and I feel like it's almost a second resurgence of what I'm capable of. So, grateful for what I've accomplished, but I still just feel like there's more out there. The UFC is so massive and you can put on beautiful performances, the ceiling's endless, so I'm excited to continue that journey.â€

I'll take your word for it.

When you die on WHAT??? oh

Tina Black (15-4, 1 NC) vs. Melissa Amaya (8-0); UFC Vegas 121, Sept. 26

Mehemmedeli Osmanli (11-1) vs. Ilimbek Akylbek Uulu (9-3); UFC Vegas 121, Sept. 26

What could you beat a UFC fighter in?

I'm thinking average UFC fighter say 170 pounds. I'm also adding a stipulation that it was to be something physical not a specialized skill (no underwater basket weaving)

I wrestled at a high school and college level but I wouldn't be able to out wrestle a younger athlete at that level now. I've done BJJ and I wouldn't want to try that either at this point.

I have kids on the basketball team, might try a game of H-O-R-S-E. Could probably also take them in a game of ping pong but that's not real physical. Anyways, what you got?

Alexandre Pantoja isnt interested in selling Joshua Van rematch

Alexandre Pantoja isn't interested in selling Joshua Van rematch
Alexandre
Pantoja is fully focused on his upcoming rematch with Joshua
Van.

Pantoja (30-6) will look to reclaim the
Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight title against Van
(17-2) at UFC
331 on Sept. 19 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Rather than
stoking the flames of their rivalry in the lead-up to their
rematch, the former champ is solely thinking about the fight.

Alexandre Pantoja says his sole focus is beating Joshua Van at
UFC 331

Pantoja says the lead-up to his rematch against Van will be
different than their first encounter. The Brazilian has no room in
his mind to sell this fight by building up the rivalry and isn't
even interested in the press conference or other pre-fight customs.
While Pantoja knows fans like some pre-fight antics, he believes he
gave them their fair share last time around.

“Now it's gonna be a little bit different than last time,†Pantoja
told Full Send MMA. “I don't try to sell this fight anymore; I'm
here to fight. I'm in fight week and I'm not here for the press
conference; I'm here for Saturday night. Doesn't matter what he
talks about. I know people love the press conference and all that,
but I gave you a good show last time. My mind is only focused on
Saturday.â€

While the dynamic between the two was amicable going into their
first meeting last year, a presser following the announcement of
the rematch featured Van taking shots at Pantoja, who didn't take
kindly to the disrespect.

Joshua Van vs. Alexandre Pantoja 2: Both predict UFC 331 finishes
Alexandre
Pantoja and Joshua Van
both claim to have tricks up their sleeves for their rematch.

Pantoja (30-6) will look to reclaim the
Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight title from Van (17-2)
in their rematch at UFC
331 on Sept. 19 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Both
125-pounders have identified holes in each other's games that
they're looking to exploit.

Alexandre Pantoja’s coach breaks down their UFC 331 flyweight
title rematch

Pantoja's muay thai coach at
American Top Team, Anderson Franca, says the Brazilian has some
surprises in store for his Octagon return. He believes Van will try
to keep the fight standing as he will be concerned about Pantoja's
ground game. However, Franca claims Pantoja can surprise Van on the
feet as well and predicts a precise fourth-round finish.

“Van's fight with Taira gave us a lot of elements to study in terms
of how he might approach this fight,†Franca told Sherdog. “We have
Plan A and Plan B. We're bringing some surprises. Pantoja is
extremely motivated and our expectations couldn't be better. This
was a particularly good training camp. Parrumpa really pushed his
conditioning so he would be able to go hard for all five rounds if
necessary. I believe Joshua Van will want to keep the fight
standing and emphasize his boxing. I think he'll be concerned about
Pantoja's grappling, but Pantoja can surprise him on the feet as
well. Still, I believe Pantoja will get the finish in the fourth
round.â€

Joshua Van explains the opening he plans to exploit against
Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 331

Meanwhile, Van says he’s noticed a chink in Pantoja's armor that he
plans to exploit. He also says he isn't worried about the former
champ's grappling and even believes he could slip in a sneaky
submission. The 24-year-old champ plans to finish Pantoja within
three rounds.

“We work on defending that position, but maybe I'll be the one who
gets him in the rear-naked choke,†Van told Full Send MMA. “I
showed with Taira I'm not scared of the ground; I'll look for a sub
if it's there. We've studied him and seen a little hole that he has
in his game that we are gonna capitalize on. There's a couple of
things I can't speak on, but it's going to be done within three
rounds.â€

Arman Tsarukyan is Mauricio Ruffy’s ‘worst stylistic matchup,’ coach says

American Top Team muay thai coach Anderson Franca believes
Arman
Tsarukyan presents a tricky stylistic challenge for Mauricio
Ruffy.

Tsarukyan will meet Ruffy in the co-main event of the
Ultimate Fighting Championship's upcoming event in Los Angeles.
Franca, who has previously cornered Tsarukyan, won't be in the
Armenian's corner at UFC
331 on Sept. 19 at Crypto.com Arena, but was instrumental in
creating the game plan.

Anderson França breaks down Arman Tsarukyan vs. Mauricio Ruffy
at UFC 331

In a recent interview with Sherdog, Franca broke down the Tsarukyan
vs. Ruffy matchup. The coach revealed changes Tsarukyan has made to
his camp in preparation for Ruffy, who he considers the best
striker in the 155-pound division.

“Arman always trains with me when he has his camp at ATT, but for
this particular camp he brought Petrosyan, who is a high-level
fighter who competed in K-1,†Franca told Sherdog. “Arman is an
athlete who never gives up and is willing to die in the ring.
Mauricio Ruffy, on the other hand, is a sniper, without a doubt the
best striker in the lightweight division.â€

Franca said he was specifically asked to help Tsarukyan prepare for
Ruffy’s striking after the matchup was finalized.

“As soon as the fight was booked, Parrumpa asked me to help him
study Ruffy's game so I could help him during camp,†Franca said.
“Arman has to be extremely focused because you can't make mistakes
against Ruffy. On the other hand, Arman is the worst stylistic
matchup for Ruffy and he also has an extremely high fight IQ. I
would say this fight is 60-40 in favor of [Tsarukyan].â€
