Morning Report | Former UFC stars share nightmare drug-testing stories: ‘I wanted to kill them’

The UFC no longer works with USADA, but veterans Chris Weidman, Jorge Masvidal, and Dustin Poirier can still remember how difficult it occasionally was to deal with the drug-testing agency.

From 2015-2023, USADA handled testing the UFC's roster of fighters, using a system of checks and balances that involved random tests and athletes regularly having to update the agency on their whereabouts. That could lead to some awkward moments, which Weidman, Masvidal, and Poirier discussed on a recent episode of their Deep Waters podcast.

“I was golfing one time and so they had to come to the golf course and they waited for me at the turn,†Weidman said. “I had to go take pee and blood, and my boys had to wait for me to do it, because once they see you, you can't leave their eyesight.

“They have to see you within an hour of calling you. Once they get in contact with you, you have like an hour, maybe an hour and a half.â€

The former UFC middleweight champion also recalled getting dinged by USADA when he was in the middle of a mountain getaway and forgot to update his location. Despite his best attempts to make it home, Weidman was out of luck following a frantic journey.

“I failed a drug test once—I didn't fail it, but I got a warning because I went to my mountain house, which is two hours away, and I didn't put it on my USADA app that I was there, and I got a call that they were at my house,†Weidman said. “So now I had to fly home. I'm flying there, but I hit some traffic. The guy left and that was a warning because I didn't get tested within the two-hour frame. I'm like, ‘Bro.'â€

Even when Weidman was where he was supposed to be, the timing of a USADA visit almost spoiled one of the biggest moments of his career. Weidman was scheduled to fight Yoel Romero at UFC 205, the promotion's first-ever event in New York City. A proud Long Island native, Weidman was determined to make the November 2016 card despite facing a multitude of obstacles.

“Another good one is when I was fighting Yoel Romero, they tested me a million times because everyone was worried about Yoel being on stuff, so I'm getting tested,†Weidman said. “Three and a half weeks before the fight, I ended up injuring my knee, I had to get surgery. So I get a surgery, but I don't tell the UFC, because if the UFC finds out I have that—And this is the first event ever in New York, I'm like, I'm fighting, I don't give a shit.

“So I do the IV, I come back from the hospital, I'm on the painkillers and everything, and I have the band on my arm from the IV and you're not allowed to get IVs, so all of a sudden doors are getting knocked on, ringing the doorbell. USADA. So I'm pretending like I just didn't have a surgery. I had to undo all the shit on my leg. It was a f*cking nightmare and I was so paranoid that I was going to get in trouble, but it ended up being good.â€

Masvidal shared a more amusing story, one that turned a routine drug test into a prolonged and somewhat awkward day for everyone involved.

“They had me after training one time, and I had done the whole training session,†Masvidal said. “I went in the sauna and everything, like, 15-20 minutes after I'm done they show up and I'm like, ‘You guys are going to be with me all day, because I'll tell you right now, I lost eight or nine pounds in this training session, I'm not pissing for a while, so you guys are going to have to chill with me.'

“I'm at Top Team, they followed me all the way to Miami. Take them everywhere with me, eating, drinking. They're like, ‘You still don't got to go to the bathroom?' ‘You can't rush this, brother. Just when it happens. You've got to get me before practice, don't ever come after practice.'â€

As for Poirier, he couldn't believe it when what would have been a home visit turned into agents having to meet him under less private circumstances.

“One time USADA called me when I was buying a truck,†Poirier said. “I was at the dealership sitting down signing papers. They call me, like, no way I can get to my house in an hour right now, so they met me at the dealership. Urine and blood, at the dealership.â€

Whether USADA's involvement was a net positive for the business or not, all three fighters can agree there were times when they threatened to lose their patience with testers.

“Another time they came, they knocked on my door, it was, like, 6 a.m. on Super Bowl Sunday,†Poirier said. “I was mad.â€

“6 a.m. on a Sunday, they've done that to me, like, twice,†Masvidal said. “I wanted to kill them.â€

Can Song Yadong actually become UFC champion?

I don't know about you, but I'm still reeling from Song Yadong straight SMOKING Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC Shanghai.

Like many, I'd pretty much accepted that Song was a talented and exciting fighter without substantial championship upside, but he just punched his way into the top 5. So how much farther can he go?

Does he await the winner of the UFC 333 main event between Petr Yan (who holds a win over Song) and Merab Dvalishvili? Or is he one fight away?

And could he actually win the title?

Josh Hokit rips Alexander Volkov, teases move to light heavyweight
Josh
Hokit believes Alexander
Volkov will never get a chance to fight him.

Hokit (10-0) is scheduled to challenge Ciryl Gane
(14-2, one no contest) for the
Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title at UFC
334 on Nov. 14 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Volkov has
criticized Hokit since the title fight was announced, and the
American has responded.

Josh Hokit says Alexander Volkov will never get his chance,
mocks heavyweight résumé

Volkov considers Hokit an easy matchup and predicts that Gane will
defeat the unbeaten contender. In response, Hokit compared their
records, noting that he defeated Derrick
Lewis and Curtis
Blaydes, both of whom beat Volkov.

“Drago†has won consecutive decisions over Jailton
Almeida and Waldo
Cortes-Acosta and is scheduled to face Rizvan
Kuniev at
UFC 333 on Oct. 24 in Abu Dhabi. Hokit added that Blaydes
defeated both Almeida and Kuniev. “The Incredible Hok†claims he
will already be dominating the light heavyweight division by the
time Volkov earns a fight with him.

“Volkov saying he'd beat me easy is funny… He'll never get the
chance,†Hokit wrote on X. “I just beat Blaydes and Lewis. Volkov
lost to BOTH. Now he's fighting Kuniev (who Blaydes beat), after
squeaking by Almeida (who Blaydes dominated). I’m going to kill
Ciryl, who he lost to twice. Zero finishes, pure boring. By the
time you earn a fight with me, I'll already be dominating LH.â€

Brendan Allen reacts to Damian Pinas’ callout: ‘You ain’t getting this, you’ve got to earn it’

Brendan Allen reacts to Damian Pinas’ callout: ‘You ain’t getting this, you’ve got to earn it’

Brendan Allen has to respect young fighters like Damian Pinas calling their shot to fight him, but he believes more work needs to be done.

Allen is set to face Christian Leroy Duncan in the main event of UFC Vegas 122 this Saturday at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. Following his quick knockout win at UFC 332 against Andrey Pulyaev, Pinas called Allen out.

Ahead of his big middleweight headliner, Allen responded.

“We knew it was going to come one day as long as I kept doing my thing,†Allen told MMA Fighting. “I mean, hey, hats off to them, but also you have to think of the position that they're in. It's a win-win for them. They fight, they get experience to fight someone like me. I'm the guy that's been fighting down. Nobody else is fighting down like me. No one else is top 5 in the world fighting out of the rankings, so.

“That's where my name pops off to the hat. They're like, ‘Oh, if I talk to this guy, then I can probably get this fight.'â€

It's not the first time Allen has been called out by the newer generation of middleweights, and — as he's very well aware — it will be far from the last. Allen enters Saturday's matchup on a three-fight win streak and in the championship picture, while Pinas is 3-0 in the UFC, which includes wins against Cesar Almeida and Wes Schultz.

Allen understands the callouts, and even has heard that the callouts from fighters such as Pinas make him upset — which to Allen is laughable.

“Multiple guys say like, ‘Oh, he gets mad,' or how can you tell if someone gets mad on Instagram?,†Allen explained. “I'm calling you bro, you can't get me mad. Like I said, hats off to those guys, but they're three fights in. I remember when I was three fights in. I think, for me, I was young and I was trying to reach for the stars every now and then, but I tried to keep it in perspective of what I could realistically get. Obviously, to the media, you call out big, you shoot for the stars, get your name going, show that you're ready, but behind closed doors, you just kind of get what you get.

“But again, I never had any star power, so I don't know how some of these guys are, and maybe they get to have that discussion, but at the end of the day, guys like him, he's just a young guy, man. He's still got a lot to prove. He fought bottom of the barrel guys and think that they can just shoot for the stars eventually just because they get a couple of wins against the low level guys. But it is what it is. That's just part of the game.â€

Allen fully accepts he's not the most over guy with the fan base. It's a part of his journey and story to get to where he wants to go — a fully earned it type of career. So he feels that the up and coming fighters don't need any extra help, although, they might be getting it from the big names calling the fights.

“I mean, it doesn't help that commentary plays into it and [they] say the things that they say,†Allen said. “That helps them, but again, it is what it is. I'm kind of getting to that point where it's like, before it would piss me off if someone said my name. I'm like, ‘Oh, all right, I'm going to show you. You think you can beat me, I'm going to show you.' Now I'm kind of at that point in my life, in my career to where it's like, ‘Oh, I appreciate the compliment. I appreciate it, but you ain't getting this. You got to earn it.' To me, you've got to earn it.

`That's my problem with the young guys and like I said, these young guys just, they're reaching, man. They're reaching and hats off to him, that's what you kind of got to do now to make a name for yourself. But that reach is way out of perspective. So, hey, they earn it, and I'm still here. Any of them can get it.â€

Colby Covington drags Daniel Cormier into ugly Jon Jones feud
Colby
Covington has brought Daniel
Cormier into his latest feud with Jon Jones.

Jones' protégé, Gable
Steveson, was knocked out by Sean Sharaf
in a major upset at UFC
331 in September in Los Angeles. Covington subsequently blamed
Jones' “bad energy†for Steveson's loss. Jones responded by saying
that Covington, his former college roommate, hasn't achieved even a
fraction of what he has in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Colby Covington tells Gable Steveson to leave Jon Jones for
Daniel Cormier

Covington responded by citing domestic abuse allegations against
Jones. “Chaos†said Jones' professional achievements don't excuse
his alleged conduct outside the cage. The former interim
welterweight champion then suggested that Steveson train with
Daniel
Cormier, Jones' longtime rival.

“The things I say only bother you because they're true,†Covington
wrote on X. “You're a narcissistic abusive sociopath. Your
achievements inside the Octagon don't make you a better person
outside of it. Those same achievements definitely don’t give you
the right to abuse women either, Jon. At the end of the day, I feel
for Gable being in this situation… It's too bad he can't take
punches from heavyweights as well as your wife does. If Gable
really cares about advancing in his career, he should leave you and
go train with a real man like Daniel Cormier.â€

Jones and Cormier's heated rivalry has continued since their
fighting careers ended. Jones defeated Cormier in their first UFC
bout, but his knockout victory in their rematch was overturned to a
no contest after “Bones†failed a drug test. Years after retiring,
“DC†has said he has no interest in reconciling with Jones.
