Luis Ortiz explodes with a first-round KO, but weight gain clouds the future

Luis Ortiz KO

Luis Ortiz returned to action in Orlando with a reminder of his power. But questions remain as the 46-year-old Cuban continues to gain weight in the twilight of his career.

Ortiz, once considered the most avoided heavyweight in the world, weighed in at a career-high 267 pounds during his fight with Phillip Penson at Caribe Royale. That number has been steadily rising since his loss to Andy Ruiz Jr. in 2022, when he weighed in at 245. Upon his return in early 2024, he weighed in at 258 pounds before Friday’s fight added another nine pounds.

Terrible knockout of Luis Ortiz

If the numbers showed a decline, the results were the opposite. Ortiz needed less than one round to detonate a powerful left hand that effectively ended Penson’s night. The knockout, his second vault victory and 30th of his career, proves that “King Kong” still has fight-changing power within him despite his advanced age and increased mass.

However, reality is never far away. At the age of 46, Ortiz fights more than just opponents. Age, inactivity and fitness are weighing on him, and the heavyweight division waits for no one. The defeat against Ruiz, during which Ortiz fell three times, remains fresh in the memory and few believe that he can turn back the clock and claim the title at the end.

What’s next for King Kong?

For now, the veteran’s record is 35-3 with 30 knockouts, and his name still enjoys recognition. Ortiz will be hoping that a win in Orlando will give him a better chance before the end of the year.

However, as time passes, each fight resembles the final chapter in the career of one of the most risky men in heavyweight boxing.
