By Elliot Raines: Shakur Stevenson vs. Teofimo Lopez is a golden deal for Modern York on January 31, 2026. The fight that fans have been waiting for is finally happening.
Fans are calling for a ‘garbage match’
News revealed today by DAZN commentator Chris Mannix that X. Stevenson (24-0, 11 KO), a native of Newark, Modern Jersey, will move up from lightweight to fight Modern Yorker Teofimo (22-1, 13 KO) for the WBO welterweight title on home turf in Modern York.
Not all fans are excited about this matchup as they see it as “garbage” between two counter attackers, both waiting for the other’s throw. Outside the ring, it will be fun to listen to their nonsense as they prepare. But instead of a square circle, it will be a chess match.
Matias and Russell would have done better
Players like Teo and Stevenson have to contend with aggressive players who constantly provide heat. That’s the only way to make it fun. It would be better if they fought welterweight champions Subriel Matias or Gary Antuanne Russell.
“From what I’ve been told, the deal is done. The last weekend of January is Teofimo vs. Shakur in Modern York. Right now the target date is January 31,” Chris Mannix told DAZN Boxing about Teofimo Lopez vs. Shakur Stevenson.
“I don’t necessarily like this fight in the ring. I think it has the potential to become a stinker based on both guys’ styles. But Shakur is the top dog at 135 pounds. Teofimo is a top contender at 140 pounds,” Chris said.
Lopez is the most popular fighter at 140, but he’s far from a “top fighter.” There are probably four better players than Teofimo, starting with Gary Antuanne Russell. The other three are Subriel Matias, Keyshawn Davis and Ernesto Mercado.
Turki’s possible role
It is not known whether Turki Alalshikh intends to finance this fight. If so, he needs to remind Teofimo and Shakur that he doesn’t want to “Tom and Jerry” fight. This may facilitate them resist fighting in their standard style. Lopez was a puncher when he fought at 135 pounds. However, since moving up to 140 pounds, he has become a carbon copy of Shakur with his hit-and-don’t-get-hit style.
Lopez’s last fight against Arnold Barboza Jr. on May 2, 2025, was one of the most dull on the Turki Alalshikh card in Times Square. He used a Shakur-like style throughout the evening, standing back three feet, rarely engaging and dull the petite crowd that remained deadly quiet.
