Khabib Nurmagomedov explains what Islam Makhachev has to do to become the GOAT
Published
3 weeks agoon
But can Makhachev make it to the very top?
The reigning welterweight champion and former lightweight champion defends his 170-pound title in the main event of UFC 330 this Saturday, when he fights top contender Ian Machado Garry. Should Makhachev win, he'll join a short list of fighters to successfully defend UFC titles in two weight classes and he'll break Anderson Silva's record for the most consecutive wins in UFC history with 17.
In an interview with Lex Fridman, Nurmagomedov was asked about his own standing on the GOAT list and if Makhachev can someday be considered the best fighter ever.
“I've never said that [about myself],†Nurmagomedov said (Russian-to-English translation via Fridman). “I never set out to become No. 1 or to become the greatest athlete and so on. I never had that. My goal was always to become the best in my sport, to become a world champion, to prove to myself that I could do it. But it's hard to choose just one person. Even now, there's always going to be [Georges] St-Pierre, there's always going to be Demetrious Johnson, there's always going to be Jon Jones, there's always going to be Fedor [Emelianenko]. If people want to include me in that conversation, if Islam gets into that conversation, if there's Cain Velasquez, [Daniel] Cormier, and so on, I'd be happy about that.
“And that's my goal, that someone from our team, from the people closest to me, gets there, too. If Jon Jones is there, why can't Islam be there? If Demetrious Johnson is there with 11 title defenses, why can't Islam be there? It's a good question. Why not? I'd like him to break all those records, to overtake Jon Jones, Demetrious Johnson, and St-Pierre, no matter how much respect I have for them.â€
Makhachev already holds one UFC record, having previously successfully defended the promotion's lightweight title four straight times. Overall as a pro, Makhachev is 28-1, with his lone loss coming at the hands of Adriano Martins in his second UFC appearance back in 2015.
He currently stands as the No. 1 fighter in MMA Fighting's Pound-for-Pound Rankings. Makhachev turns 35 in October and while he has made no definitive timeline for retirement, Nurmagomedov believes his childhood friend and lifelong training partner has a tall hill to climb as he looks to close out his career with big fights.
“Islam has a chance, but time is starting to run out a little,†Nurmagomedov said. “This worries me because, for example, Jones fought at light heavyweight and now at heavyweight. Time is a little kinder to those divisions. Even at 38, you can still compete at the heavier weights. You don't need the same reaction speed and all that.
“But when you compete in lighter weight classes, 155, 170, age really catches up. I think active fighters, retired fighters, wrestlers, athletes, especially those who competed in these weight classes, will understand what I'm talking about. When you're 35 and when you're 32 and when you're 38, you're a totally different athlete.â€
Nurmagomedov and Makhachev were raised together, and Nurmagomedov says his father, famed coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, considered Makhachev to be one of his favorite students.
It's that deep bond and shared purpose that has put Makhachev on the path to greatness—and possibly becoming the greatest of all time.
“We trained together for many years,†Nurmagomedov said. “And he never had to go anywhere to find a sparring partner because he always had one in the gym. So I developed by training with the older guys in the gym, the stronger guys, the better guys when I was young. Then when they left, I was the one in front. Islam kept growing, growing, growing. Now I left. Islam is the one in front. And now other guys are developing through him. This is a kind of chain that exists in a gym, in a training system that produces the best fighters in the world. And in this chain, Islam was always behind me. If I was behind someone, Islam was behind me. Now, others are following. Islam, Usman [Nurmagomedov], Amru [Nurmagomedov], and other guys. You could put them against any of the best fighters in the world right now, and they would perform very well.
“So in this chain we've had since 2003, and now it's already 2026, that's 23 years. Islam was the one coming up behind me. And now there are younger guys coming up behind Islam. And it's no secret that Islam will turn 35 in October, but what makes me happy is that there are younger guys coming up behind him. I left. Islam stepped in. One day Islam will leave, too, and others will take his place. And this cycle, it never ends. It keeps going, and it keeps pulling the next generation forward.â€

Tyson Fury says he’ll move on from Anthony Joshua after latest stalemate
Published

September 4, 2026
Fury appears to have run out of patience with the long-running
saga involving Anthony
Joshua.
Fury and Joshua have spent months trying to finalize their highly
anticipated heavyweight matchup, but negotiations have stalled over
the location. Fury’s side has pushed for the fight to take place in
the United States, while Joshua and Matchroom Boxing's Eddie Hearn
have favored England.
Tyson Fury says Anthony Joshua fight is ‘going nowhere' amid
location dispute
Fury took to Instagram and claimed that Joshua is the primary
roadblock for the fight coming to fruition.
“The facts are you don't want to fight,†Fury said in an Instagram
video. “Because if you did, you'd be ready to rock and roll like I
am. Tyson Fury has already said 1,000 times will fight anywhere, no
problem at all. Turki Alalshikh has paid you tens of millions to
fight and you're still acting like little b*tches. It is what it
is. There's nothing I can do. I can't make a coward fight, can
I?â€
Fury directed more criticism towards Joshua for not overruling
Hearn's stance regarding the location. He then revealed that he's
now looking for other matchups.
“If A.J. was any sort of man, he'd overrule the sausage [Eddie
Hearn] and he'd stand up and fight, but obviously he's not,†Fury
added. “One thing for sure is I won't wait for a sausage who's been
knocked spark out by Daniel Dubois. I've waited 10 years for this;
I've been ready every time. Every single time. But one thing I
won't be doing is wasting my later years at 38 years old with a
freak who doesn't want to fight. So, I will move on… There are
plenty of world champions out there who do want to fight, who do
want to make some money, so I'll be giving them a knock. This is
going nowhere. As always, 10 years later, still in the same boat.
Still dragging on by a mouthpiece who's an absolute piece of
sh*t.â€

Dana White says fans will lose their minds for UFC Hawaii

Ultimate Fighting Championship.
During his recent appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show,†UFC CEO
Dana
White was asked where he'd like to stage an event the promotion
has never visited previously. Hawaii immediately came to mind,
although he explained that infrastructure has prevented the
promotion from staging an event there, but a new arena is
apparently in the works.
Dana White points to a new Hawaii arena as the key to UFC’s
long-awaited debut
According to White, the state’s existing infrastructure has been
the biggest obstacle to staging an event. However, with a new arena
targeted for 2028-29, taking the promotion to the island state is a
priority.
“One of our biggest markets since day one has been Hawaii, and
we've still never put on an event in Hawaii,†White said. “We've
had multiple world champions from Hawaii. The infrastructure there
can't support a UFC event. But now they're building a new arena
there. Supposed to be done in [2028, 2029].â€
White believes Hawaii would be a particularly attractive
destination for both fans and the UFC’s staff.
“I like destinations where people want to go,†White added. “When
we do UFC Hawaii, people will lose their minds. Who doesn't want to
go to UFC Hawaii? So, off the top of my head, you’re firing that at
me… When I think about UFC Hawaii, that will be a fun one.â€

Jason Jackson says UFC doesnt want him disrupting Islam Makhachevs division

Jackson believes he can disrupt the
Ultimate Fighting Championship's welterweight division and
upset the reigning champ.
Jackson recently called for a UFC signing while making a bold
claim. The former Bellator
welterweight champion believes he can defeat UFC welterweight king
Islam
Makhachev. Furthermore, the 35-year-old says the premier
promotion doesn't want him on the roster, considering his age.
Jason Jackson explains why he believes he can beat UFC champ
Islam Makhachev
Makhachev faced one of the toughest tests of his career while
successfully defending his welterweight title against Ian Garry at
UFC
330. Jackson claims he had his way with Garry in training and
never struggled against the Irishman.
Jackson also handed Yaroslav
Amosov his lone career loss. According to the Jamaican, Amosov,
who has finished both of his UFC wins so far, is a better fighter
than Makhachev. He believes the UFC isn't offering him a contract
as they fear that he would turn the division on its head.
“I want to go to the UFC. I'm not even gonna beat around the bush
because I feel like I could beat Makhachev,†Jackson said in an X
post. “And the reason why I said that is that he struggled with
Ian. And no disrespect to Ian, I done put Ian down in the gym. I
don't struggle with him. And from what I did to Yaroslav, I think
he is better than Makhachev. If I get into the UFC, I feel like
that's one that the UFC don't want, is a guy my age coming from a
different promotion, going there and just disrupting their whole
pecking order. I feel like that's why they are holding out on me
getting in there.â€
Jackson (20-6) is 2-2 in his last four outings and most recently
scored a 20-second knockout win at
Most Valuable Promotions' inaugural mixed martial arts event
this past May.
