John Fury says Oleksandr Usyk deserves more recognition after his fight with Rico Verhoeven

Oleksandr Usyk’s performance against Rico Verhoeven continues to divide opinion, but John Fury believes the Ukrainian deserves much more recognition than he received after their heavyweight clash.

Usyk defended his WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles following an 11th-round victory over Verhoeven last month, although the result sparked debate after the Dutchman enjoyed considerable success throughout the competition.

Verhoeven had a slight advantage on one judge’s scorecard after 10 rounds, while the other two judges fought even at 95-95. Usyk eventually turned the tide with a right uppercut that knocked down the former kickboxing champion before referee Mark Lyson waved off the fight once the round had already ended.

Despite the criticism directed at Usyk’s performance, John Fury emphasized that the three-time undisputed champion should not be judged too harshly.

“No, you know, because ultimately he created problems. He’s a 6-foot-6 athlete, he trains like a demon, he’s as robust as a bull, and he plays like a badger. He’s going to cause problems. World kickboxing champion. I don’t know who said he doesn’t have a chance,” John told Secondsout about Usyk’s fight with the much larger Verhoeven.

Fury also pointed to a size disadvantage that Usyk has consistently overcome since moving up from cruiserweight.

“You have to give Usyk credit because he’s just a cruiserweight that’s blowing up, you know, and he’s won heavyweight titles, right? But you know what? He just seems to have done his job, right? And he’s done his job. So fair game to Usyk.”

However, Fury remained critical of the controversial ending, arguing that Verhoeven’s corner should have been used to determine whether their fighter was able to continue in the final round.

Verhoeven has since called for a rematch, although Usyk’s immediate future remains uncertain. The undefeated champion has been ordered by the WBC to make a mandatory defense against Agit Kabayel, and failure to do so could jeopardize his title reign.

Tyson Fury Raises Doubts on Potential Anthony Joshua Fight: I Can Never See Him Taking That

Tyson Fury Raises Doubts on Potential Anthony Joshua Fight: "I Can Never See Him Taking That"

Tyson Fury has raised serious concerns over his proposed showdown with Anthony Joshua.

After over a decade of build-up, Fury and Joshua finally look set to meet later this year, provided that both men can first come through their respective warm-up bouts this weekend.

Fury takes on Mariusz Wach in Thailand on Friday, before Joshua then meets Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia 24 hours laterseemingly paving the way for the all-British showdown at the end of 2026.

‘The Gypsy King’ still doesn’t seem convinced that it will happen though, as he shared his doubts whilst speaking to IFL TV.

“Until that fight happens and we’re walking to the ring, I’m not convinced it does. 100% [I’m doubtful].

I can never see that stiff sitting on a table with me ever. What the f**k is he going to say? I can never see him at a press conference with me, it would be a bombardment. I can never see him taking that.

“He wouldn’t even get in the ring [after the Makhmudov fight]. He s**t himself and sat on a stool outside and didn’t even want to get up and build the fight and make the fight happen when Turki said to us both ‘come on boys let’s do it get in the ring and make it happen.’

“He didn’t want to do it, so how is he going to come face to face with me at a press conference? I think he’s a bottle job, a flapper, a chinless wonder as well.”

Despite Fury’s fears, all signs still point towards the fight taking place later this year, though there still remains a debate over where it will be held.

Two Brits Set for World Title Showdown as Dmitry Bivol Primed to Vacate WBO Belt

"Two Brits Set for World Title Showdown as Dmitry Bivol Primed to Vacate WBO Belt"

Dmitry Bivol looked as if he was ready to move on from a trilogy fight with Artur Beterbiev, but it now seems as though the unified light-heavyweight world champion is ready to run it back with his rival, thus opening the door for two Brits to compete for one of his belts.

Bivol claimed the undisputed light-heavyweight crown in February 2025 when he avenged his defeat to Beterbiev with a majority-decision win, but he soon relinquished the WBC marble – which was then handed to David Benavidez.

After 15 months of inactivity, Bivol returned to action in May to fulfil his IBF mandatory and shake off some ring rust against Germany’s Michael Eifertbut it was then believed that Bivol would proceed with his WBO mandatory and next face Liverpool’s Callum Smith, much to the frustration of Beterbiev.

Yet, in an interview with Ring MagazineBivol’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has revealed that the 35-year-old is instead keen for a third fight with the Russian-Canadian. Therefore, he expects Bivol to vacate the WBO world title in order to make it happen, with Smith likely to rematch Joshua Buatsi for the vacant belt.

“I think it’s unlikely he will defend against Smith. I think Smith will fight Joshua Buatsi for the vacant title. But Dmitry is ready to make the Beterbiev fight.”

Smith decisioned Buatsi on the Beterbiev-Bivol II undercard in a Fight of the Year contender and Smith is yet to fight since, whilst Buatsi was seen as fortunate by some to get the decision when he returned and fought Zach Parker in November.

Smith and Buatsi could be set to top the bill of the second ‘Matchroom vs Queensberry’ event, which will likely take place in November.

Hasim Rahman Declares One Heavyweight as the Greatest Ever: Ali Would Be Too Small for Him

"Hasim Rahman Declares One Heavyweight as the Greatest Ever: 'Ali Would Be Too Small for Him'"

Former world champion Hasim Rahman believes that, in any era of heavyweight boxing, one man would solidify himself at the top of the tree.

‘The Rock’ is best known for his monumental upset victory over Lennox Lewis in 2001when a stunning fifth-round finish saw him claim the WBC and IBF titles.

Before their heavyweight encounter, many had questioned the logic behind Lewis’ training camp in Las Vegas, given that he was to defend his titles in South Africa.

Not only that, but ‘The Lion’ afforded himself little time to adjust to the African nation’s high altitude, with his performance ultimately reflecting a lack of preparation.

Lewis did, however, manage to produce a much improved display in their immediate rematch, reclaiming his titles with a ruthless fourth-round stoppage.

As a result, Rahman has since named his former foe as the greatest heavyweight of all time, above the likes of Muhammad AliJack Dempsey and Rocky Marciano.

Unlike those three all-time greats, Rahman told BBC Radio 5 Livethat Lewis not only possessed impeccable ring intelligence but could also utilise his physical attributes to a much greater extent than others.

“I’m finding it hard to put somebody ahead of him. In any era … I just really don’t know who could beat him.

“[Ali, Dempsey, Marciano…] Those guys were too small. I mean, Ali was too small for George Foreman back then, when he was a smaller version of Big George, so how could he deal with someone like Lennox – who is huge and can move, and can use his distance well?

“I think it’s really unfair to compare eras, but I just don’t know who could deal with that man.”

Lewis was a three-time world heavyweight champion, and up until Oleksandr Usyk repeated the feat in 2024, was the last undisputed heavyweight champion following his win over Evander Holyfield in 1999.

After defeating Rahman, Lewis also scored an eighth-round finish over Mike Tyson and ended his illustrious career by stopping Vitali Klitschko in six rounds.
