This was not a dispute that escaped either side behind schedule. The IBF had already made its position clear by rejecting the fight and refunding the penalty fees ahead of the evening’s fight. Team Opetai moved forward anyway, knowing the likely outcome, and that’s the part that defines this situation more than the outcome itself.
Jai won the fight against Brandon Glanton and retained his ring title, but the IBF title was always on the line. This transaction has already occurred twice. The first one took place in 2023, when he lost the belt after another unsanctioned fight, only to regain it after returning to the IBF structures. This time there is no indication that he intends to return via the same route.
Zuffa Boxing’s involvement pushed things even further. The IBF was only willing to consider the fight if the additional belt would be considered secondary, but when it became clear that the promotion was intent on presenting his title as the main prize, the position strengthened. That’s where the lines were drawn.
Opetaia continues to talk about becoming the undisputed cruiserweight champion, taking aim at the other belt holders in the division. The difficulty is that uncontested status remains subject to the same sanctioning authorities from which it now emerged, and there is no alternative route that would provide the same recognition.
Nothing about this result is clear. The champion chose to operate outside the structure that governs his title, with the governing body imposing its rules.
The IBF loses its undefeated belt holder, but retains what it has always sold – consistency. It has long been the most immovable of the four main sanctioning bodies and this decision follows the same pattern as before. There are no exceptions, even for a champion from the top of the league.
Opetaia, on the other hand, believes that larger platforms and different titles can be treated in the same way. This bet goes against the way the sport still recognizes champions and there is no indication that the system is ready to adapt. One side doesn’t move and neither does the other.
