“We are chasing the undisputed fighters. That’s my dream. Look at the last few undisputed fighters. You have [Terence] Crawford, here you go [Oleksandr] Usyk, sports legend.
“I want my name to be there.”
Opetaia currently holds the IBF cruiserweight title, but could face disciplinary consequences if the sanctioning body refuses to recognize the fight with Glanton, which is expected to crown Zuffa’s inaugural cruiserweight titleholder. Reports circulated this week claiming that the IBF had instructed him to choose between defending his belt or fighting for a modern title.
The Australian rejected the claims and insisted the situation had been misreported.
“False! You know, I want to work with the IBF. And it’s not out of the question. I want to become undisputed. And if the IBF doesn’t join us and cooperate with us, man, my dreams will become a fantasy.”
Opetaia also commented on speculations about the negotiations.
“Just don’t listen to everything you read on the internet, you should know that bro. People always jump to conclusions.
“People just want to look the way they know they should [what’s going on]so everyone clicks on their thing. They don’t know the street, bro! Honestly, they don’t know the street. It’s a completely made-up scenario.”
The cruiserweight division remains subject to established sanctioning authorities. To remain undisputed, Opetaia still needs to win the WBA, WBC and WBO belts, as well as the IBF title he already holds.
If the IBF ultimately refuses to sanction the Glanton fight, Opetaia could lose his belt. The decision would complicate the immediate cruiserweight title picture as the division waits to see if Zuffa’s belt structure can coexist with the existing championship system.
