Gillian Robertson breaks silence on Din Thomas controversy

Gillian
Robertson has addressed her recent defeat and comments from
longtime coach and mentor, Din
Thomas.

Robertson suffered a unanimous decision loss to
Ultimate Fighting Championship strawweight queen Mackenzie
Dern in her failed title bid at UFC
330 in Philadelphia.

Thomas later announced on the UFC 330 post-fight show that he's
stepping away from cornering fighters, saying he had taken
Robertson as far as he believes she can go. The timing of the
announcement subsequently drew criticism from both fans and
fighters. Robertson has now finally weighed in on the same.

Gillian Robertson says Din Thomas' comments made her question
his apology

Robertson, giving a statement to Ariel Helwani, says she had no
indication before the post-show broadcast that Thomas planned to
make the announcement.

â€œPrior to the broadcast, I didn't see any sign of what was to be
said,â€ Robertson said. â€œAfter the broadcast, he had said, â€˜I will
address this in the morning,' followed by, â€˜Going live on air in 15
minutes.'â€

Thomas later contacted her privately, but she has not responded to
his apology because of comments he made towards the rest of her
team.

â€œHe did reach out to me privately at 5 p.m. and then sent a voice
message apologizing around 7:30 p.m., to which I have not responded
due to comments he has made since the broadcast privately to my
team that lead me to believe there is not much weight in the
apology.â€

She specifically cited the following comment from Thomas:

â€œMe doing that publicly was more so for TV purposes and
ratings.â€

The Canadian then discussed her future, adding that she'll soon
return to the gym and resume her quest for UFC gold.

â€œAs for now, I regroup, take some time to heal, and I will be back
in the gym as soon as possible on the same mission,” Robertson
added.

I reached out to Gillian
Robertson following Din Thomas'
comments and subsequent apology to get her thoughts on the
situation. Here’s what she had to say:

UFC Edmonton on Saturday. Malott landed a knee in the second
round and followed with a punch before the referee stopped the
bout. Despite the setback, â€œNew Mansaâ€ remains optimistic about his
future.

Buckley won six straight fights before his current skid. He now
plans to livestream his efforts to rebuild, inviting fans to follow
the process.

â€œRight now, we rebuilding and I want y'all to see the process, not
just the results,â€ Buckley wrote in the caption of his postfight
Instagram post. â€œThe highs, the lows, and everything it takes to
become who God called me to be.â€

In the accompanying video, Buckley said he wants to share his
training and introduce fans to his team.

â€œI realize that I want to document everything,â€ Buckley said. â€œI
want to document the process, I want to document the work, I want
to document the team. This is really just starting back over from
scratch; creating a new foundation and making something happenâ€¦ I'm
not going to stop; I'm going to keep working. And I'll make sure
that everybody remembers that name.â€

Alexander Volkanovski faces an undefeated challenger, and Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili settle their epic trilogy at UFC 333 this Saturday.

In the main event, Volkanovski puts his featherweight title on the line once again as he takes on Movsar Evloev, who has had his hand raised in all 10 of his UFC appearances and holds wins over Lerone Murphy, Aljamain Sterling, Arnold Allen, and Diego Lopes. At 38, Volkanovski is closer to the end of his career than the beginning, but can he muster up another classic performance to deny the hungry Evloev?

The stakes are just as high in the co-main event, which sees Yan and Dvalishvili face off for a third time with both men owning a definitive victory in their series. Dvalishvili defeated Yan in a three-round bout in 2023, handing Yan a third straight loss and seemingly removing him from the title picture for good; however, Yan bounced back and ended Dvalishvili's bantamweight championship run this past December with a virtuoso five-round performance. Now, the battle again, with a belt and possibly all-time great status on the line.
