Gable Steveson wants UFC title ‘as fast as possible,’ but doesn’t want to rush

Gable Steveson isn't trying to rush things, but he does want the UFC heavyweight title ASAP.

Only 26 years old and an Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, Steveson is one of the most-hyped MMA prospects of all time. After trying his hand at football and professional wrestling, Steveson moved to MMA in 2025, immediately showcasing rare athleticism and talent that left many fans wondering when — not if — Steveson would move to the UFC and take the heavyweight title.

Steveson fulfilled the former earlier this year, making his promotional debut at UFC 329 with a first-round TKO over Elisha Ellison, and if he had his druthers, the latter would be sooner rather than later.

“I would like to say as fast as possible, but I would like to get my reps in, make sure the people know I earned my respect, and earned my time in the octagon,†Steveson told reporters at the RAF 12 press conference when asked how soon he wants to challenge for the heavyweight title. “And when that time comes, I'll most definitely be ready.â€

Speaking with MMA Fighting after the press conference, Steveson went into more detail about his plans for working his way to the title, and how his work with Jon Jones expedited his personal timeline.

“I think my progression has been great,†Steveson said. “I think with Jon and a lot of guys in my corner, the progression has been faster than we thought. And obviously, with my last fight I introduced my kicks; I introduced knees this time. My next fight I'll introduce something else and just keep building off that.

“I think however long it takes is what means most to me. Whether it's eight fights, whether it's five fights, whether it's four, whether it's six, it doesn't really matter. I come out there to compete. My goal right now is to earn the respect of the fans, earn the respect of the people, the higher-ups, earn the respect of myself to go out there and compete in these matchups that may seem a little off, but it's part of the game. You've got to build the respect with the team and build the respect within yourself, and honor the cage, and get your reps in.

“So, I'm getting my reps in now. When that time comes to jump — which will be very soon — I'll jump.â€

First thing first, though, Steveson already has his next UFC fight booked, taking on Sean Sharaf next month at UFC 331, and he's hoping to keep this high rate of activity up. He aims to return with a fight at Madison Square Garden before the end of the year.

“I'm happy about this,†Steveson said of the matchup. “I'm the one who chose to fight again early. I could have fought at MSG and waited through that time, but I wanted to be competitive and wrestle, and then fight again, and then fight again after that. With my opponent, Sean Sharaf, a big guy who's not really mobile, can't really top a takedown, who wants to go out there and brawl and eat a lot of punches — I expect him to come out there the best he possibly can, but I feel like there's no avenue for him to even compete.â€

Marvin Vettori makes major change following 4 straight UFC losses
Marvin
Vettori has changed things up in an attempt to snap his losing
streak.

Vettori (19-10) has lost four fights in a row in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship and is scheduled to face
Ismail
Naurdiev (25-8) at UFC
332 on Oct. 3 at Delta Center in Salt Lake City. The Italian
recently revealed that he has parted ways with
American Top Team and returned to
Kings MMA.

Beneil Dariush takes over as Vettori’s head coach ahead of UFC
332

While Vettori has no complaints about ATT, he believes the gym
wasn't getting the best out of him. The former title challenger has
returned to his roots in California, where he trained during his
ascent through the middleweight ranks. While the Kings MMA team he
previously trained with no longer exists in the same form, Vettori
said he is now training with Beneil
Dariush as his head coach.

“I made some changes… I'm back in California,†Vettori told MMA
Fighting. “I had to find myself again and I did. I feel good. I’m
actually excited to fight… I went back to my roots and went back to
what made me the fighter who won five in a row and fought for the
title… ATT, I've got nothing but great things to say. I feel like
it wasn't getting the best out of me… [My new team] is not Kings
MMA like the one that was before; that doesn't even exist anymore.
I have been training with Beneil Dariush as a head coach. And I
went back to my boxing coach, my S&C coach.â€

Vettori trained at Kings MMA from 2015 to 2022 before a brief stint
at
Xtreme Couture. “The Italian Dream†then moved to Florida in
2023 to train at ATT.

Imanol Rodriguez eyes Joshua Van: ‘First, I'll go for his friend’
Imanol
Rodriguez already has another fight in mind beyond his upcoming

Ultimate Fighting Championship bout.

Rodriguez (7-0) will face Alden Coria
(13-3) on Oct. 3 on the prelims of UFC
332 at Delta Center in Salt Lake City. The unbeaten
Dana White's Contender Series graduate wants to break into the
Top 15 at 125 pounds by the end of 2026 and is targeting a ranked
opponent later this year.

Imanol Rodriguez plans to pursue Joshua Van after facing Alden
Coria at UFC 332

In a pre-fight interview ahead of UFC 332, Rodriguez expressed his
desire to face a ranked opponent if he defeats Coria. The
26-year-old wants to return to the Octagon in December and is
targeting a “clean†performance Saturday that would allow him to
make a two-month turnaround.

“I have a plan for this year and that’s to fight again in
December,†Rodriguez said. “So, this is a win that needs to be
clean. And I want to call out some people on the rankings and see
somebody up in the rankings that I can fight.â€

Rodriguez has also set his sights on flyweight champion Joshua Van,
Coria's teammate.

“I think Joshua Van will be in the corner of Alden Coria, so I
think he’s going to see that if we cross paths, he’s going to have
a tough fighter ahead of him, a tough challenge,†Rodriguez added.
“First, I’ll go for his friend and then I’ll go for him.â€

Rodriguez has finished all seven of his professional victories,
including six by knockout and one by submission, and is 1-0 in the
UFC. Meanwhile, Coria is 3-0 in the UFC and is riding a seven-fight
unbeaten streak.
