Eddie Hearn said that Jaron “Boots” Ennis and Vergil Ortiz have already agreed on the terms of the fight, but the promoter is still hesitant whether the fight will actually happen.
Ennis (35-0, 31 KO) and Ortiz (24-0, 22 KO) have long been primed for a clash and faced each other in the ring following Ortiz’s decisive second-round victory over Erickson Lubin in Texas on Saturday, with both apparently committed to fighting each other in the next round.
Both Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy have deals with DAZN, which means broadcast negotiations – which are often a stumbling block to a deal – shouldn’t be an issue.
Hearn, who represents Ennis, said nothing was certain even though terms were agreed before Ortiz’s win over Lubin.
“We were sitting in a room; DAZN senior executive Oscar De La Hoya, [Golden Boy president] Eric Gomez and we agreed on terms for this fight,” Hearn told ESPN.
“Boots signed a contract with these terms, so if those terms had to change, we would discuss it. But they weren’t very open. They said if they won on Saturday, which they did, they would try to make that fight happen.”
Asked what would prevent a deal from happening, Hearn replied: “The delusion. People who don’t actually want a fight. I mean, you saw them come out [saying]: “We are the A side.” Who cares who is side A or B? Vergil never won a world title. [Ennis] won the unification world title.
“Vergil is a great fighter. Boots is a great fighter. You can easily come up with reasons not to fight.”
In October, Ennis defeated Uisma Lima by two knockdowns, stopped the fight in the first round in his 154-pound debut and is now the WBA interim junior middleweight champion. Ortiz is the WBC interim super welterweight champion.
After Ortiz’s victory, De La Hoya announced that his fighter was on the A team.
“I’m going to sit with Eddie Hearn, obviously we have the advantage because he has it [Ortiz] a better person and we’ll see if we can come to an agreement, and I’m sure we will,” De La Hoya said.
“Hopefully Eddie Hearn will give us a call and we can come to favorable terms for Vergil and give him what he wants.”
In response to these comments, Hearn said: “I mean, I don’t like a lot of the comments that I’m already hearing, but I know DAZN is going to put a lot of pressure on everyone to fight this fight.
“We went to Dallas because we wanted to show that we are 100% ready for this fight.
